Corruption is like another slavery like situation for India.

It is like a leech sucking the life blood out of a country of sages like Buddha, Mahavira, Shankaracharya, Gandhi, and also making it dirtier with its poisonous impacts. Every sphere of life has been affected by it. The country is reeling under its tentacles. The situation has assumed so horrific dimensions that no body in todays India can claim to be free from its influence. It appears that everybody is contributing to it. Todays Indian society has become like river Yamuna which is merrily being polluted by everybody, despite harbouring the capital city of the country!

Now-a-days, it has become a fashion to rant about the evil of corruption. While the situation is indeed true as stated, the paradox is that the very person shouting about it may be deeply involved in corrupt activities. The situation is also very interesting in that very few people really understand what is corruption. Without knowing it they unknowingly promote and participate in corruption. A politician or policeman taking bribe, a politician using unfair means to win an election, an officer attending office late, a class-bunking student, a child making big demands on their parents, a person taking or giving bribe, a movie goer or a passenger buying tickets in black, a milkman mixing water in milk, a shopkeeper mixing adulterants in food articles, a student cheating in exams, a biker or motorist breaking traffic rules, a worker bringing office stationery to home for personal use by his children, etc. The list of activities is endless. Anti-corruption measures are the need of the hour. The moment it is achieved India can really become the proverbial golden bird again. To root out the evil of corruption from society, we need to make a comprehensive code of conduct for politicians, legislatures, bureaucrats, judiciary, teachers, students and common man. For this, some basic institutions are needed which would be overseeing the measures of change. Judiciary is the key of such change. India has been lucky that though judiciary has also been some time accused of corruption, by and large it has remained clean. Then there are institutions like CVC, CAG, army, etc which need to be given emergency powers. Many of these ideas have been put up in the parliament to be passed as a bill by anna hazare and arvind kejriwal.

Such institutions should be given more independence and initiatives on issues related to corruption. Special courts should be set-up to take up such issues and speedy trial is to be promoted. Law and order machinery should be allowed to work without political interference. NGOs and media should come forward to create awareness against corruption in society and educate people to combat this evil. Only then we would be able to save our system from being collapsed.
