BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE, PILANI INSTRUCTION DIVISION FIRST SEMESTER 2012-13 Course Handout Part II Date:

7-Jan-/2013 In addition to part -I (General Handout for all courses appended to the time table) this portion gives further specific details regarding the course. Course No. : Course Title : Instructor-in-charge : ME F 241 Design of Machine Elements D. M. KULKARNI A. C. Kulkarni

1. Course Description: The course combines the knowledge of mechanics of solids, structure
and properties of materials and mathematics, studied by students in the previous years to present the application methodology and techniques to the design of machine elements. First the general principles of design in static and dynamic conditions are taught and then application to selected machine elements is covered.

2. Scope and Objective of the Course: Fundamentals and principles of design, design and
selection of machine elements such as shafts, bearings and gears etc. design of mechanisms.

ME F 241 | MACHINE DESIGN & DRAWING

PRACTICAL CLASSES | MONDAY 2.00 PM TO 3.50 PM IN CC-219 Machine Drawing, which serves as the link between Machine design and Manufacturing, is an integral part of industry. The study of Machine drawing mainly involves learning to sketch machine parts, showing the relative positions of the different components and prepare assembly drawings. It also includes the study of conventions and rules to be followed by the engineer for making accurate drawings that are easily understood or visualized by others in the Machine shop. By going through the practical classes, student will be able to: Develop primary knowledge of working drawing using Pro/E Software. Produce orthographic drawing of different machine parts. Develop skill to produce detailed drawings of machines parts from assembly drawing. Develop skill to produce assembly drawings and exploded views Develop an idea to produce cross sectional views or auxiliary views by taking section at appropriate locations. Textbooks 1.
