Dear Mrs.

Brown , After reviewing my evaluations on Kyle Smith, I do not believe he is currently suited for the team leadership position at this time. This decision is not just based on my opinion alone, but also on the opinions of 15 of his group members over a 6 month period. Mr. Smith has proven to be a great team member but I do not think his leadership skills have reached their potential yet. I believe with further training and experience he will be able to further his development and move up in the company. Kyle was evaluated in three different behavior categories: contributing, listening, and facilitating group problem solving. I believe this evaluation gives us an accurate overview of Kyle's leadership abilities. In reference to Kyle's evaluation, he scored very well on the contributing section. . Kyle received a mean score of 2.83, on a 0-3 scale. The score indicated that his team members also agree with me. This score is exceptional and makes him a value member to the team. This score was calculated based on major team contributing actions such as: being on time to meetings, respecting deadlines, and offering suggestions and ideas to the team. Kyle is well liked by most people I see him interact with. He is also very dependable and has a passion for his job. Kyle is an active member in the group and I believe he demonstrates solid teamwork. Kyle's lowest score on the evaluation was a 1.96 on the listening category, which had a 0-3 range. Kyle struggles in this category because he does not let his teammates voice their own opinion. Listening is a very important quality to have and Kyle's low listening ability will not allow him to be the best team leader that he can be. Kyle also struggles with telling others what to think. His ideas are all very good but he is not willing to listen to his teammates' ideas and instead tries to tell them what they should be thinking. Advancement in a meeting is also very important and according to Kyle's teammates, this is something he also struggles with. They reported that many times Kyle is not on the same subject as the rest of the group, gets caught up in his own thinking and disagreeing with other's ideas. This is a major drawback because it confuses other members and causes interruptions during group discussions. Because listening is a very crucial part of being a leader, we will need to continue working on this in the future. The final category of the evaluation was called "facilitating group proble m solving". In this category, Kyles peers and I evaluated his abilities to ask questions and organize discussions, define questions in order to stay on topic, evaluate suggested ideas, encourage alternative solutions and discard all but the best solution. Due to Kyle's low score in this category, I believe his teammates do not respect him as a leader since they participated in the evaluation scoring. His score in this category was a 2.18, on a 0-3 range. Kyle is not a key contributor during group discussions because his solutions are not diverse and he is off topic many times. Although Kyle does not excel at leading a group, I believe his abilities could improve with more time and experience. When considering this evaluation, I believe Kyle is not ready to take on a leadership role at this time, but with more training I believe he has the potential to be a good leader in the future. At this point, I believe helping him focus on his areas for improvement would be the best option. I plan on helping him develop better listening skills, through proper listen training and exercises, and giving him more training in facilitating group discussion. Focusing on improvement will not only make him a better leader, but will also give him the ability to move up in the company in the future. Thank you for your trust in my evaluation and decision. Sincerely, H.G.
