Training days for teachers in Primary and Secondary Schools

Jonathan Korejko is a full time, freelance artist who specialises in Papermaking and Printmaking. He has taught 1,000s of young people all over the UK how to make paper and enjoy themselves whilst learning about this fascinating craft. He has run many projects in schools, youth centres, museums and craft centres with children to help them create paper, books, wall hangings, 3- D objects and lanterns, all based on simple procedures using recycled paper and plant material from the local environment . This programme is designed to give teachers insight into the papermaking process by offering practical experience, theoretical understanding, and examples of how papermaking can transform a young persons perception of the wider issues involving paper and the role it plays in our everyday lives.

The Practical: We will be using flowers, leaves, seeds, and stems of plants from the artist's garden to make distinctive and unique papers. This is an opportunity to learn about paper fibres, how to obtain them from recycled materials, plants and cloth. Finished pieces can then be used for writing, drawing, or painting projects. Handmade paper can also be made into greeting cards, printed on, and made into books or wall hangings.

Course Outline: Introduction : basic materials, tools and equipment Recycling and preparing raw materials Getting wet: forming, pressing and drying handmade paper Adding organic materials Changing and mixing colours Laminating : making double sided papers Embedding : making double sided paper with objects sandwiched inside

The Theoretical: This section of the training day will help participants gain a wider understanding of how fundamental paper is to a childs appreciation of their world, and how teachers can exploit a rich variety of activities associated with the craft. Short slide shows with excellent illustrations will be shown to help teachers gain insight into: Paper from Old Rope: National Curriculum course KS1 and 2 Unit B. The Tools for the Job: Youll be motivated and excited by the end of the day, and youll have a selection of lovely handmade papers to take home with you to dry and show pupils when you get back to school. But it doesnt stop there: you will also have an armful of practical information, tips, and handouts, including: How to set up your own papermaking unit in school. Factsheets about plants, how to gather them, use them, and learn more about them, including ideas and recipes. Lists of interesting websites about paper to visit on your own or with your children about the papermaking industry, hand papermaking, and contemporary papermaking artists. And if thats not enough, youll be given a reading list to help you find some useful books where can discover other aspects of papermaking techniques, history, experiments, and new ways to use handmade paper.

Course Objectives: You will work in a professional environment in which you can efficiently and safely explore the craft of papermaking. You will gain the necessary skills to use the materials provided to produce multiple sheets of interesting and innovative pieces of paper. You will be given explanations of the technical applications of the materials used, as well as the recipes and the chemistry involved in making successful handmade paper with your children. You will be provided with factsheets to help you make/procure/purchase the tools and materials needed to set up your own papermaking unit in school or at home. You will be working in a fun, social atmosphere in which friendship can be established and future contact maintained to foster an ongoing exchange of ideas and experience.

Every child should be given the opportunity to make paper at least once in their life before they grow up, and every adult should make paper for the rest of their life to make sure that they never grow up.
