A Farewell to Arms Play Project* As told from Catherine Barkley For a major grade you will be required to be an active

part of a small acting company that will perform one of the books from A Farewell to Arms. Your groups must be large enough for everyone to play a speaking part (even if its the narrator), but the whole group will receive ONE grade. (200 points) Prepare your presentation using the following requirements. Must include representations of the following themes: war as disillusionment and love is /as_____ (fill in the blank). You must also include the following symbols: rain, Catherines hair, and one of your groups choosing. (Theme and Symbols: 75 points) You must use props and wear costumes appropriate to the time period you select. Make as much as possible, but you can use commercial items if you want. No puppet shows are allowed; videos can be made, but make sure the audience can hear the dialogue. Otherwise, make sure your set is read to go when I call on you and that you know beforehand how to set it up quickly. (Preparation and Performance: 25 points) Henry, Catherine, Rinaldi, and all the characters participate in drinking and smoking among other activities that are not permissible in a classroom. In your groups, find other ways to represent their gluttony, their promiscuity, their libertine life-styles. (For example: Instead of constantly drinking alcohol, characters can be over texting; unable to survive a day without texting.) (25 points) Submit videos in the form of DVDs or YouTube links, not tapes. No flash drives. The action of the act will be reduced to no more than 15 minutes, but everyone must have a speaking part. Actors do not have to have their lines memorized, but should be familiar enough so that fumbling and long breaks are not needed. Basically, your act should be polished and rehearsed. (Preparation and Performance: 25 points) For the most part, you will use language mimicking Hemingways minimalistic style (dialogue, short staccato sentences, repetition of certain expressions, etc). However, you can change names slightly modernizing them -- and add references from the time period (especially if you change the time period). You must have at least five key excerpts worked into your act somewhere. These excerpts must be submitted prior to your due date. (Language: 75 points) A typed script must be turned into me on the day you present your act. (Script: 25 points).
