What is Ngaben?

Ngaben a cremation ceremony in Bali. Ngaben ceremony was one of the main ceremony for the people of Bali, so Ngaben is compulsory ceremony performed when someone dies. Accelerate the process of spirit, soul or atman Hyang return to the One or the One God. Death or the death of a person, means the relationship with the real world has been broken, he said to go back to the afterlife or the afterlife. God, the creator of the birth and death which is to set the status of the age limit, which can not be predicted by humans, the precise time when a person belongs to the afterlife. In the way of death, there is no definite provision for a person, no favoritism, no differences were rich or poor, eventually everything will go toward death in accordance with the will of the time. Thus, death is a necessity of human life and each tribe and their traditions have their own ordinances to give his last respect as human beings who have a cultural civilization.

The History of Ngaben

The origins of the word Ngaben till now still vary. Some say the word Ngaben derived from the word "ashes" to view the results of cremation. There is also the opinion that Ngaben word came from the word "ngabenin" by observing how much cost is spent. And there is also argued that the word Ngaben it comes from the word "ngabain" by reason of the death "equipped" (take) something that is still associated with the material for the trip to the natural spirits. Among the above opinion, there's one more opinion-related question. Ngaben word that comes from the word "fire". Said the fire had presfiks "ng" to "ngapi" and have the suffix "an" becomes "ngapian" that after experiencing the password to "ngapen". And because there is a change phoneme "p" becomes "b" sound changes according to law "bpmw" and become "Ngaben". Thus Ngaben word meaning "to fire". The fire is here is Brahma (the Creator). That means atma the dead through ritual Ngaben will lead the Brahma-loka linggih as a manifestation of Brahma in Creating Hyang Widhi (utpeti).

Kinds of Fire in Ngaben

Indeed there are two types of fire used in the ceremony of Fire Ngaben scale (concrete) is the fire that used to burn the corpse or the death and pengawak Fire Void (abstract) derived from the Vedas The Sulinggih as the work of burned pemuput impurities that attach to the spirit . This process is called "mralina".

In between the two types of fire in the ceremony that Ngaben, was higher and the absolute value is important is timeless fire or flame praline that emerged from the Sulinggih. The Sulinggih (the muput) will appeal to Lord Shiva to come down into the body (Siwiarcana) to do "pralina". Maybe because the fire is considered more absolute praline / important, in some mountainous areas in Bali have Ngaben ceremony without having to burn the bodies with fire, but enough to bury him. Ceremony Ngaben this type is called "when tanem or mratiwi". So there was also a ceremony without the use of fire Ngaben (scale). But the timeless fire / fire praline still used by Vedic Sulinggih and facilities and Tirtha Tirtha pangentas praline. Apart from the issue of fire which is more important. Specifically about the presence of fire scale is functioning as a tool that will accelerate the melting process sthula sarira (gross weight) derived from the Five Mahabutha to blend back into the Five Great Mahabhuta this universe. The process of acceleration of the return of the Panca elements Mahabhuta will certainly accelerate the purification process also atma to get to the nature Swahloka (Dewa Pitara) so that the corrected proper dilinggihkan / Mrajan to worship. Of course, after the ceremony "mamukur" which is a continuation of "Ngaben".

Morning Ngaben days before the ceremony begins, all family and friends arrived to pay their last respects and is usually served merely to eat and drink. At noon, the bodies are cleaned and taken out of the house or placed in Bade ox, prepared by the members of Banjar, and carried a gang, splendor, accompanied gambelan noise and "hymn" to the place of the ceremony. Bade (where to put the bodies) and paraded around with the intention that the spirit of the dead man becomes confused and can not be returned to the family that can cause interference, etc.. Arriving at the ceremony, the remains placed in the back of the ox, pastor said the spell to taste, then lit a fire early on the body. After all to ashes, the next ceremony conducted the ashes into the nearest river or sea and then thrown away, returned to the water and wind. This is the final ceremony of rough body of the deceased, then the family will still respect the spirits of the liver in the family temple, after all this time, spirits are believed to be returning to the world.
