CHEMICAL ABSTRACT.

The main objective of the medicinal chemistry is to synthesize the compounds that show promising activity as therapeutic agents with low toxicity. The scheme involves synthesis, characterization of Schiff bases from PABA using anhydrous zinc chloride as catalyst. Since Schiff bases are the intermediates in synthesis of beta lactams, so an attempt was made to synthesize Schiff bases by treating PABA with aromatic substituted as well as unsubstituted aldehydes using anhydrous zinc chloride as catalyst in good amount. The identification and characterization of the synthesized compounds were carried out by melting point, thin layer chromatography, FT-IR, NMR, Mass data to ascertain that all synthesized compounds were of different chemical nature than the respective parent compound. Key words: PABA, Aldehydes, Schiff bases, Zinc chloride catalyst.
