Section 2
2.1 ACADEMIC PROCESS
Program of Studies and Educational Process Manipal University Jaipur aims to provide globally accepted education of a high standard. In all programs of study, great emphasis is placed on the use of ICT to impart quality education to students. The University follows an efficient and flexible semester system with continuous and comprehensive evaluation. Each semester of study has minimum requirements of number of course credits that must be taken. Each course is defined in terms of contact hours, by lectures and/or practical sessions. Duration of Academic Program The Maximum duration allowed for a student to complete the degree requirement is twice the duration of the academic program, from the date of first registration in the first semester. Course Codes The courses offered are coded with 2 letters indicating the department offering the course and followed by 4 digits. The first digit indicates the level (UG/PG level), the second digit indicates the semester and last two digits indicate subject code. The courses offered are listed for each branch/department separately.

2.3 REGISTRATION
Pre-registration Each student has to register for the core courses with the parent department at the commencement of each semester on the day notified in the academic calendar. They must also register for the elective courses (both program & open electives) they wish to take for the next semester as notified in the academic calendar. Re-registration Students can re-register in one or more courses offered in the current semester (both Theory and Labs) for improvement in internal assessment grades after paying the prescribed fees, if they had got F/ I /DT grade(s) earlier. Students need to attend regular classes in all such cases, and they have to submit assignments and appear for sessional tests along with the regular students. However re-registration during a regular semester will be allowed only with prior permission of respective HODs.

2.2 CREDIT BASED SYSTEM

MUJ uses a Credit Based System for assessment. Each course, theory as well as practical, is expressed in terms of a certain number of credits. The number of contact hours per week determines the credits. Normally, in the case of theory courses, the number of credits is equal to the number of contact hours (lectures & tutorials) per week. In the case of practicals, one credit is assigned for every three contact hours per week. Course work in each semester is expressed in terms of a specified number of credits. Every course is assigned a [L T P C] code indicating Lectures/week, Tutorials/week, Practical/week and the Credits assigned. For example, a theory course with a [L T P C] code [3 1 0 4] has 3 hours of Lectures/week, and 1 hour of Tutorial/week and the Credits assigned are 4. A lab course with [L T P C] code [0 0 6 2] has 6 hours of Lab/week, and the Credits assigned are 2. A student successfully completes a particular semester when he/she earns the specified credits of that semester. A student earns full credits for a subject registered if he/she secures letter grade E or higher. Promotion to higher semesters is based on securing a prescribed minimum number of credits, as detailed in section 9.7 below. A student completes the requirements for graduation when he/she earns the specified number of credits in all the semesters making up the course.

2.4 PROMOTION TO HIGHER SEMESTERS

Promotion of a student from one semester to the next higher semester is subject to the minimum academic performance requirements as stated below. To be eligible for promotion to the third semester, a student should have earned a minimum of 30 credits at the end of second semester. To be eligible for promotion to the fifth semester, a student should have earned a minimum of 75 credits at the end of fourth semester. To be eligible for promotion to seventh semester of a four year programme, a student should have earned a minimum of 125 credits at the end of sixth semester. A student who is not eligible for promotion from an even semester to the next higher semester for reasons of not having earned the prescribed minimum number of credits will be required to discontinue the academic program temporarily. He/she will be put on academic probation for the next academic year and a warning letter shall be issued.

Section 2
2.5 OUTLINE OF EVALUATION
The academic performance of a student is evaluated internally by the course instructor/s concerned. Student performance in each theory course is evaluated out of a maximum of 100 marks of which 50 marks are for in-semester and 50 marks for the end-semester assessments. The in-semester assessment in theory subjects is based on sessional tests, assignments, quizzes, case presentations, seminars, etc. Student performance in practicals is also evaluated out of a maximum of 100 marks, and is based totally on insemester assessment of which 60 marks are awarded based on class performance and 40 marks based on the test/s conducted. The Course and evaluation plans, including the weightage for each component, approved by the HOD, are given by the Course Instructor at the beginning of the semester. The performance of students in the sessional tests and assignments is properly documented and announced within the scheduled period after the tests by the course instructor. The overall performance of a student in a course is expressed in terms of a Letter Grade.

2.6 EVALUATION PROCEDURE

Continuous Assessment A student's performance is continuously assessed in all courses. The student is evaluated based on class/tutorial participation, assignment work, lab work, class tests, midterm tests, quizzes, and end semester examinations, all of which contribute to the final grade awarded for the subject. Relative Grading Marks obtained in the in-semester and end-semester examinations are added together and a 10-point grading system is used to award the student with an overall letter grade for the course. Letter Grading System The final evaluation of the course is carried out on a Ten Point Grading System. Letter Grades and Grade Points are as shown below:

Letter Grade A+ Grade Points 10

A 9

B 8

C 7

D 6

E 5

F/ I /DT 0

A student who earns a minimum of 5 grade points (E grade) in a course is declared to have successfully completed the course, and earned the credits assigned to that course. A course successfully completed cannot be repeated. A student should have appeared for the end-semester examination of the prescribed course of study (mere appearance in the continuous assessment tests is not sufficient) to be eligible for the award of a passing grade in the course. A separate minimum of 35% in the end semester examination is essential to be awarded a passing grade in a theory course. A student who is eligible for, but fails to appear in the end-semester examination due to valid reasons, will be awarded an 'I' grade (incomplete) on the grade sheet. However, this needs approval of the HOI. A student who is not eligible to appear in the endsemester examination owing to his/her not fulfilling the minimum attendance requirements in any course(s), will be awarded a 'DT' grade (detained) on the grade sheet and he/she has to fulfill the minimum attendance requirements by re-registering for those courses at the next available opportunity.

Section 2
2.7 GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA) & CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE (CGPA)
The overall performance of a student will be indicated by two indices: Grade Point Average (GPA) & Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Each course letter grade is converted into grade points as given in section 6 above. These grade points (Gi) are weighted with the number of credits (Ci) assigned to the course. The Grade Point Average (GPA) is the weighted average of Grade Points awarded to a student in a semester. The weighted average of GPA of all semesters at any point of time is the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) at that point of time. GPA and CGPA calculations can be expressed as

Si=1 CiGi GPA = _________ n S i=1 Ci

n N GPA Sj=1 j (Si=1 Ci ) j __________________ CGPA = N (Sn Sj=1 i=1 Ci ) j
Where n = Number of courses registered Ci = Course credits Gi = Grade point N = Number of semesters

Courses Engg. Mathematics - 1 Mechanics of Solids Basic Electronics Mechanical Engg. Engineering Physics Comm. Skills in English Basic Workshop Practice Engineering Physics lab

Credit Ci 4 4 4 4 4 3 1 1

Letter Grade A A+ B C B A A B

Grade Point Gi 9 10 8 7 8 9 9 8

Ci*Gi 36 40 32 28 32 27 9 8

Credits earned = 25 GPA = 36+40+32+28+32+27+9+8/25 = 8.48

Semester i ii iii iv

Credits earned 25 25 26 26

GPA 8.48 8.62 8.24 8.42

Total credits earned up to IV semesters 102 CGPA = (25x8.48+25x8.62+26x8.24+26x8.42)/102 = 8.44

After the results are declared, grade cards will be issued to each student, containing the list of courses for that semester and the grades obtained by the student, as well as GPA of that semester.

Section 2
2.8 END-SEMESTER EXAMINATION AND MAKE-UP EXAMINATION
The end semester examination will be conducted only in the courses offered in the current semester. That is, at the end of the odd semester, examinations in the courses of the odd semester will be conducted. Similarly, at the end of the even semester, examinations will be conducted only in the courses of the even semester. However, for students of the final semester, the examinations of odd semester courses and even semester courses will be conducted at the end of the final semester. Make-up (supplementary) examinations will be held at the end of the semester break to help the students who have got F/I grade in the courses offered during the semester. The cut-off marks for grades in the make-up examination will be same as those in the regular endsemester examination. However, for students who earlier failed (F grade) in any course, a maximum of C grade only will be awarded in subsequent examinations irrespective of their performance. Those who miss regular examinations due to valid reasons (I/DT grade) will be allowed to retain whatever grade they secure in make-up examinations. Re-valuation of Answer Books A student may apply for revaluation of end-semester examination answer books by submitting an application along with the specified fee. The student will be able to see his/her answer book and the scheme of evaluation on a scheduled date and if not satisfied with the assessment, he/she can request for revaluation. Withholding of Results Results will be withheld if a student has not paid his/her dues or there is a case of disciplinary action pending against him/her. Requirements for Award of Degree A student completes the requirements for graduation if he/she has Fulfilled all minimum requirements of study and earned the number of credits specified in the prescribed courses of study. Paid all dues to the Institute. No case of disciplinary action is pending against him/her.

2.9 ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS

All students must attend every lecture, tutorial and practical class. A student with less than 75% attendance in individual courses shall not be permitted to write the end semester examination in that course and will be given DT letter grade in the course. Attendance in lectures, tests, practicals and tutorials all count towards the calculation of this attendance percentage. The aggregate percentage of attendance of the student during the semester will be entered in his/her grade sheet of that semester. A summer term of six to eight weeks duration during the summer vacation will be conducted for students who have attendance shortage. If the course is offered, students with F/I grades are also allowed to register for summer term for internal assessment improvement. A student is permitted to take a maximum of three theory and one laboratory (practical subject) course during the summer term. The number of contact hours per week per course will be six to eight, against three to four per course in the regular semester. The evaluation process for the summer term will be the same as that of the regular semester. There will be regular internal assessment and examinations at the end of the summer semester. However, there will be no makeup examination at the end of summer semester.

Section 2
