IMPORTANT WARNINGS
READ ALL WARNINGS BEFORE USING
THIS PUBLICATION
Failure to follow warnings and comply with instructions for proper use
may result in serious injury or death.
Anyone using this publication must read and understand all warnings and other information listed
with each product picture and description. The following warnings apply to every product in this
catalong. Warnings specific to individual products are printed at the beginning of that products
section.
All products are sold with the express understanding that the purchaser is thoroughly familiar with
their correct application and safe use. Use all products properly, in a safe manner and for the
application for which they were designed. Superior LMS, Inc. assumes no responsibility for the
use or misapplication of any product we sell. Responsibility for design and use decisions rests with
the user.
ANY PRODUCT WILL FAIL IF ABUSED, MISUSED, OVERUSED OR
NOT MAINTAINED PROPERLY.
Such breaks can cause loads to fall or swing out of control, possibly resulting in serious injury or
death as well as major property damage. To avoid such an event:
1. Never exceed the Working Load Limit (WLL).
2. Match components properly, by recommended size and capacity.
3. Stay out from beneath a raised load.
4. Avoid shock loading.
5. Inspect all products regularly.

WORKING LOAD LIMIT

Also referred to in the rigging industry as Safe Working Load (SWL), Rated Load Value (RLV),
Resulting Safe Working Load (RSWL), and Rated Capacity.
NEVER , under any circumstances, exceed the Working Load Limit.
The Working Load Limit is the maximum load which should ever be applied to a product, even when
the product is new and when the load is uniformly applied. Avoid side loading. All catalog ratings
are based upon normal environmental conditions, and considerations must be given to unusual conditions such as extreme temperatures, either high or low, corrosive environments, etc. Use of the
product in such environments may require a reduction in the Working Load Limit.
Products may not be welded or modified in any manner. Modifications made by the user invalidate the Working Load Limit and Superior LMS, Inc. denies any liability or responsibility for injury,
death or property damage in accidents involving modified products.

MATCHING OF COMPONENTS
Make certain that components such as hooks, links, shackles, etc. used with wire rope, chain, cordage or synthetic fiber slings are of suitable material size and strength to provide adequate safety
protection. Attachments must be properly installed and must have a Working Load Limit that is at
least equal to the product with which they are used.

RAISED LOADS
Keep out from beneath a raised load.
Do not operate a load over people.
Do not ride on loads.

SHOCK LOADS
Avoid impacting, jerking or swinging of load as this could cause the Working Load Limit to be
exceeded. Generally, a shock load is significantly greater than the static load. Avoid shock loading.

REGULAR INSPECTIONS
Inspect products regularly for visible damage, cracks, wear, elongation, rust, etc. Protect all products from corrosion. The need for periodic inspections cannot be overemphasized. No product
can continue to operate at its rated capacity indefinitely. Periodic inspections can help to determine
when to replace a product and can reduce rigging hazards. We recommend that users keep inspection records to help pinpoint problems and ensure regular inspections.
Frequency of inspection will depend upon environmental conditions, application, storage of product
prior to use, frequency of use, etc. When in doubt, inspect products prior to each use. Carefully
check each item for wear, deformation, cracks or elongation - a sure sign of imminent failure. Immediately withdraw such items from service.
Rust damage is another potential hazard. When in doubt about the extent of corrosion or other
damage, withdraw the items from service.
Destroy, rather than discard, any items that have been judged defective. They might be used
again by someone who is unaware of the hazards involved.

Wire Rope
Cautions and Warnings
Failure to follow warnings and instructions can result in serious injury or death.
WIRE ROPE IS A MACHINE. Understand and respect it.
Like any machine, it needs proper care and maintenance for optimal safety and long service life. For a fuller understanding
of Wire Rope, we recommend the Wire Rope Users Manual published by the American Iron and Steel Institute. Much of
the information in this catalog is taken from this publication. Refer to the general warnings on the previous pages for
additional information. All of these warnings apply to wire rope.

Rated Capacity.
Rated capacity is the load under which a new wire rope may handle under given operating conditions and at an assumed
design factor. A design factor of 5 is the industry standard for most wire ropes. Operating loads are not to exceed 20% of
the catalog break strength of the rope. Operating loads may have to be reduced when life, limb, or valuable property are
at risk or other than new rope is used.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR CHOOSING A DESIGN FACTOR RESTS WITH THE USER.

Attachments must have at least the same Working Load Limit as the wire rope
used.
Clips, sockets, thimbles, sleeves, hooks, links, shackles, sheaves, blocks, etc. must match in size, material and strength to
provide adequate safety protection. Proper installation is crucial for maximum efficiency and safety.

Keep out from under a raised load.

Do not operate a load over people. Do not ride on load. Conduct all lifting operations in such a manner that if equipment were to fail or break, no personnel would be injured. Keep out of the line of force of any load.

Avoid shock loads.

Avoid impacting, jerking or swinging of load. Working Load Limit will not apply in these circumtances because a shock
load is generally significantly greater than the static load.

Inspect wire rope regularly.

Use inspection instructions as guidelines only. Check the general condition of the wire rope. Also, look for localized
damage and wear, especially at wire rope attachments. Inspect all parts that come in contact with the wire rope. Poor
performance of wire rope can often be traced back to worn or incorrectly sized sheaves, drums, rollers, etc. Look for
kinks, broken wires, abrasions, lack of lubrication, rust damage, crushing, reduction of diameter, stretch, or other obvious
damage. If any of these conditions exists or if there is any other apparent damage to the wire rope, retire the wire rope
according to the instructions below.
When in doubt about the extent of the damage, retire the wire rope in question immediately. There is no way to accurately test wire rope under field conditions with certainty. It is easy to replace a rope, but impossible to replace a life. For
specific inspection procedures check the various OSHA and ANSI publications relevant to wire rope.

Destroy, rather than discard, wire rope to be retired.

Wire rope that is not destroyed might be used again by someone unaware of the hazards associated with its use. Destroying wire rope is best accomplished by cutting it into small pieces.

Wire Rope Terms

CORE TYPE
There are two basic types of wire rope cores; IWRC (Independent Wire Rope
Core) and FC (Fiber Core). IWRC ropes are less flexible than FC ropes but have
a much higher breaking strength.
The Independent Wire Rope Core is usually a 7 x 7 construction and provides
strong support for the strands surrounding it, while increasing overall strength of
the rope.
Fiber Core ropes have a core that is made either of hemp fiber or Polypropylene
(abbreviated PPC). They are highly flexible, but weaker and have poor resistance to crushing.

POLYPROPYLENE CORE - PPC

FINISH
Bright ropes are made with uncoated (Bright) wires which are manufactured from
high carbon steel.
Galvanized wire ropes are used when extra corrosion resistance is required. There
are two processes used to manufacture galvanized wires:
Galvanized to Finish Size is first drawn as a bright wire to a predetermined size that is smaller than the required wire finish size. This wire is
then coated in the galvanizing process to the required finish size. Since a
portion of the cross section of the resultant wire is made of zinc, the
nominal strength of these ropes is 10% less than that of bright ropes of
the same type and diameter. This process is not commonly used now.
Drawn Galvanized wire is galvanized before the final drawing to finish
size. Since the galvanized coating also goes through the drawing process,
it is much thinner than the coating on Galvanized to Finish Size wire.
Drawn galvanized wire are equal in strength to the same diameter and
type of bright ropes.
Stainless Steel used in wire ropes is a special alloy containing roughly 18%
chromium and 8% nickel. It is highly resistant to corrosion and is commonly
used as control cable and for yachting. Stainless steel ropes come in two grades,
AISI - 304 and AISI - 316. AISI - 316 is more corrosion resistant and is less
commonly used.

GRADE
The word plow applied to steel, dates to the early days of wire rope in England, and its origin is unclear. Some believe
that because steel in a farm plow had to be very high quality, the term plow steel was used to describe the highest
standard available. Others feel the term dates to a plowing system developed by John Fowler in about 1865, in which wire
ropes were essential. A pair of steam engines with winding drums were set at opposite ends of a field, rigged to haul a
plow back and forth across with a wire rope. In either case, plow meant high quality, and when an improved grade was
developed in the 1880s, it became known as Improved Plow Steel (IPS).
Today, the grade designations of the wire rope industry still reflect this early nomenclature for the steel from which wire
rope was made. The most common grades of rope today are called Improved Plow Steel (IPS), Extra Improved Plow Steel
(EIPS or XIPS) which has nominal strength 15% higher than IPS, and Extra Extra Improved Plow Steel (EEIPS or XXIPS)
which has a nominal strength 10% higher than EIPS.

LAY
Lay means three things in wire rope design: Direction, relationship and length.
1. The direction strands lay in the rope - RIGHT or LEFT. When you look down the length of a rope, strands
of a right lay rope follow a clockwise direction. Left Lay is counterclockwise. It makes no difference which
direction you look.
2. The relationship between the direction strands lay in the rope and the direction the wires lay in the strands.
In REGULAR lay, wires are laid opposite the direction the strands lay in the rope. In LANG lay, the wires
are laid in the same direction as the strands lay in the rope. In appearance, wires in Regular Lay are parallel to
the length of the rope, and in Lang Lay they cross the rope axis at an angle. In ALTERNATE lay, every
other strand alternates between regular lay and lang lay.
3. The length along the rope which one strand uses to make one complete spiral around the rope core. During
closing of a rope, this length is carefully monitored to assure that it conforms to engineering specifications
established when the rope is designed.
Differences in handling characteristics, abrasion and crushing resistance, etc., which distinguish Regular Lay from Lang
Lay ropes result from the manner in which the individual wires are laid in the rope. In Regular Lay, less surface of
individual wires is exposed to external abrasion, while Lang Lay spreads wear over a greater length of wire exposed on the
exterior of the rope. Regular Lay is more stable and resistant to crushing than Lang Lay. While Lang Lay is more fatigue
and abrasion resistant, its use should only be in accordance with specific recommendations. It should never be used with
either end free to rotate, both ends must be securely fastened.

LUBRICATION
To prolong the service life of wire rope, proper lubrication is highly recommended. Wire rope is a machine made up of
many moving parts and like any other machine, these moving parts should be covered with a film of oil to decrease
friction and increase resistance to wear. The lubricants used on wire rope must be freed from acid or alkali, and must have
both the quantities necessary to penetrate into the inside of the rope and, at the same time, adhere to the outside of the
rope.

B LUBE - BLACK LUBE
C LUBE - SAME AS B, BUT THICKER

END TREATMENTS
SEIZING
Process of securing the stranded ends of a wire rope by winding an
annealed or stranded wire tightly around the body of the wire to
prevent the ends from spreading apart (or brooming).
FUSING
Process where a torch is used to heat the end of a wire rope so that
the individual wires melt slightly and fuse together. Used for the
same purpose as seizing, but does not allow strands to operate
independently.
TAPERING AND WELDING
Identical process to fusing, but end of wire rope is cut with torch to
a tapered point. Commonly used to ease insertion of end of rope
into winch drum.

Lewis Snake Grips

The Lewis Snake Grip expands or contracts to
grip different or identical cable and/or rope
sizes as per the customers needs. Save time
stringing up, changing and unstringing because
the snake requires no special tools. The swivel
and swing link go smoothly through blocks and
prevent line twisting. Install new cable by using
old existing cable as pulling line. Always seize the
ends of the grips by banding or taping.

The LSG-X series performs the same function

as the standard LSG series. The LSG-X cannot
be taken apart in the middle, it is permanently
attached via our new Swivel Tube Assembly.
This swivel tube assembly is a low profile heavyduty friction swivel. This snake is for the customer who does not need to separate the two
pulling grip elements and who prefers a very low
profile swivel. The swivel is permanently greased
and has the size range and working load clearly
stenciled on the swivel tube assembly.

Warnings for use of Load Binders

IMPROPER OPERATION OF LOAD BINDERS CAN RESULT IN SERIOUS

INJURY OR DEATH.
Never exceed the Working Load Limit.
Do not operate the binder while you or anyone else is on the load. It is possible to
slip or fall, risking serious injury or death.
When applying the binder, always position it so the handle is tightened in the
downward direction. Failure to do so may result in a sudden snapping back of the
lever which might result in serious injury or death.
Load Binders are designed to be tightened to the approximate Working Load Limit
by a substantial hand effort. Do not use a hand extension (Cheater Pipe). Extensions can seriously damage the binder system and can result in serious injury or
death.
The operator should at all times use the load binder from a firm standing position
that will insure protection for himself as well as those in the immediate vicinity.
Load Binders are a form of machinery and require periodic inspection and maintenance. Inspect for wear, deformation, cracks, nicks or gouges before using. Replace
if damaged.
Load Binders should be periodically lubricated to give optimum performance and
reduce friction damage.
Consult the U.S. Government Printing Office for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Regulations for additional important information, specifically S 392.9 (relating to
safe loading), S 393.100 (relating to protection against shifting cargo) and S 393.102
(relating to strength securement systems).

Additional Warnings for Load Binders,

Lever Type

37

In releasing lever type binders, be sure no one is positioned to be struck by the

handle which may release suddenly.
If there is a possibility for a relaxation of the chain when the binder is in the locked
or over center position, the handle should be secured to the binding chain by
securely wrapping the loose end of the chain around the handle. Whenever possible,
secure the handle down with a positive retaining method, such as a tie wire or rope.

Fittings
Cautions and Warnings
Failure to follow warnings and instructions can result in serious injury or death.
Refer to the general warnings at the beginning of this catalog.
These warnings also apply to fittings. Only additional warnings and information are listed below.

Never exceed the Working Load Limit.

The Working Load Limit is the maximum load which should be applied to the product, even when the product is new and
when the load is uniformly applied - straight line pull only. Avoid side loading. All catalog ratings are based upon usual
environmental conditions, and consideration must be given to unusual conditions such as extreme high or low temperatures,
chemical solutions or vapors, prolonged immersion in salt water, etc. Such conditions or high risk applications may necessitate reducing the Working Load Limit.
Working Load Limits will not apply if product has been welded or otherwise modified.

Match components properly.

Make certain that components such as hooks, links or shackles, etc. used with wire rope, chain, cordage or synthetic slings
are of suitable material and strength to provide adequate safety protection. Attachments must be properly installed and must
have a Working Load Limit at least equal to the product with which they are used.

Keep out from under a raised load.

Conduct all lifting operations in such a manner that if there were an equipment failure, no personnel would be injured.
Keep out of the line of force of any load.
Do not operate a load over people.
Do not ride on load.

Avoid shock loads.

Avoid impacting, jerking or swinging of load as the Working Load Limit could be exceeded. A shock load is generally greater
than a static load.

Inspect products regularly.

No product can keep operating at its rated capacity indefinitely. Periodic inspections help determine when to replace a
product and reduce rigging hazards. Check for visible damage, cracks, wear, elongation, rust, corrosion, etc. When in doubt
about the extent of the damage, retire the item in question immediately.

Destroy, rather than discard, items that have been judged defective.
They might be used again by someone unaware of the hazard associated with use.

Slings
Factors Effecting Performance of Web Slings
Sharp Edges
All synthetic webbing slings are subject to cutting when lifting items with sharp edges. Sharp edges in
contact with the sling should be padded with material of sufficient strength to prevent damage to the sling.
Wear pads give extra protection to the sling where the most wear occurs.
Ultra-Violet Light Exposure
Environments in which synthetic webbing slings are continuously exposed to ultra-violet light can affect
the strength of synthetic webbing slings in varying degrees from slight to total degradation.
To minimize the effects of ultra-violet light (sunlight or flashes from arc-welding):
Store slings in a cool, dry and dark place when not being used for long periods of time.
Inspect slings weekly or more frequently depending on sling use.
Visual indications of ultra-violet degradation are:
Bleaching out of sling color.
Increased stiffness in sling material.
Surface abrasion in areas not normally in contact with the load.
Proof Testing
Slings used in environments where they are subject to continuous exposure to ultra-violet
light should be proof tested to two times rated capacity annually, or more frequently depending on the severity of exposure. Return slings to Superior LMS, Inc. and we will perform this
proof testing for a nominal fee.
Chemically Active Environments
Chemically active environments can affect the strength of webbing slings in varying degrees, ranging from
no effect to total degradation. Before ordering slings that are to be used in chemically active environments,
please consult with our sales staff, or check the chart below.
