History (Slide 1) Bipolar Disorder o o Sometimes called manic depressive disorder Mental Illness associated with extreme mood

mood swings 2000 years old 400 B.C - Hippocrates 1952 Listed in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) 1980 Illness listed as bipolar disorder in place of manic-depressive illness.

Symptoms (Slide 2 and 3) Types of bipolar disorder include: Bipolar I disorder. Mood swings with bipolar I cause significant difficulty in your job, school or relationships. Bipolar II disorder. Bipolar II is less severe than bipolar I. Cyclothmic disorder: Cyclothymic criteria for bipolar disorder - you've had numerous hypomanic episodes and periods of mild depression. Dysphoric Mania: A condition in which the symptoms of mania and depression occur simultaneously.

Manic Phase Inflated self-esteem Euphoria Risky or Aggressive behavior Delusions or break from reality (Psychosis)

Depressive Phase Suicidal thoughts or behaviors Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and guilt Increased fatigue Loss of interest in activities once considered enjoyable.

Diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder (Slide 4) No imaging/lab tests are useful. Family history of mental illness or bipolar Psychological evaluation Mood charting Must meet criteria spelled out in DSM.

Treatment (Slide 5 and 6) Medication Anticonvulsants Antipsychotics Antidepressants Lithium

Psychotherapy Cognitive behavioral therapy Family therapy Group therapy

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Formerly known as electroshock

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Application of rapid pulses of magnetic field to the head.

Bipolar disorder currently has no cure. Carrie Fisher- Princess Leia (Slide 7) Went public on 20/20 about her bipolar disorder. Author of Postcards from the Edge, Wishful Thinking, and Shockaholic. Recognized for her public awareness on Bipolar Disorder. Appeared on Oprah to discuss Thalians 55th Gala.

Note: The reason that I have only outlined 5 slides is because a lot of the information simply wont be able to fit on the slide. I tried my best to condense the information in a way that grasps the general idea of what we are trying to say, but obviously not all the information is there. If we do want a title slide we would have to work with 7 slides to put information on so keep this in mind. If we dont have a title slide this means more space for information. From what we have now the treatment slide and the definition/symptom slide are looking like they will have to either be cut down or cut into two slides. This means we would be up to a total of 7 slides with one left over that could be used for more information or a title slide. I would appreciate it if everyone could review this and if I missed anything let me know.
