Secondary Lesson Plan Template Topic of lesson: Stem and Leaf Plots and Histograms Lesson 2 Length of class: 50 minutes Standard(s) to be addressed in this lesson: 7.SP.1. Understand that statistics can be used to gain information about a population by examining a sample of the population; generalizations about a population from a sample are valid only if the sample is representative of the population. Enduring Understandings/Essential Questions targeted in this lesson: Statistics is the process of collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data to make and evaluate inferences and predictions about our world How can we use statistics to study and analyze the world? Learning Objectives for this lesson (Written using verbs from Blooms Taxonomy): Students will create stem and leaf plots and histograms with 100% accuracy on the worksheet. Instructional method(s) chosen in this lesson (and why): Lecture, there are certain steps and processes for making stem and leaf plots and histograms which will need explaining. Students will also work in small groups to work through problems. Materials/Resources: -Stem and leaf plot and histogram note sheet with Exit Slip -Homework worksheet -Pencil/paper Lesson Sequence: (How will you organize your lesson?) 1. Intro: a list of test scores will be on the board with the question how could this be displayed? This will get students to be thinking about graphical representations. 2. Stem and Leaf Plot mini lecture: explain and make a stem and leaf plot with the test score data. Stem: tens, hundreds place, Leaf: ones, decimal digits Shows the frequency in the intervals 3. Give students another data set and have them do one with their group, compare plots. 4. Histogram mini lecture: explain and make a histogram with the test scores

5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Like a stem and leaf plot on its side Bins: should be between 4-8 Intervals: even number Bins need to be touching, with the interval under each bin Have students make a histogram from the second data set, compare graphs Skewness and symmetry mini lecture: show different histograms with right skewness, left skewness, and symmetry. We will talk about what the graphical representations tell us. What inferences we can make and analyze the different graphs. Exit Slip: Mean, median, mode review Homework: Worksheet, students will go to http://amstat.org/censusatschool/index.cfm and collect data on something, create a stem and leaf plot and a histogram, analyze the data, and its skewness.

Assessment of learning (How will I know if students achieved my learning objectives?) The homework will show whether students know how to make a stem and leaf plot and histogram, skewness, and how to read these. While walking around and observing the class I can also informally assess their understanding. Lesson Checklist Did I hook my students by getting them excited about the topic? Did I introduce my learning objectives to the students (even if I just posted them in the room)? Are my learning objectives aligned with my state standards? Did I choose an instructional strategy/activity appropriate to the purpose(s) of the lesson? Did I organize my lesson clearly? Did I account for any downtime and/or transitions? Did I model or provide guided practice (if necessary)? Did I scaffold student learning (if necessary)? Did I assess my students learning (formative or summative)? Did I successfully bring the lesson to a within the allotted time? Did I provide a bridge to the next lesson in my unit sequence? Did I provide anchor/enrichment activities for students who complete the lesson early (if necessary)? Did I differentiate for my individual students needs?

How could the following data be displayed? 91, 75, 86, 62, 99, 68, 86, 70, 81, 74, 88, 75, 92, 71, 89, 90, 82

STEM AND LEAF PLOT: Stem: tens, hundreds place on the left Leaf: ones, decimal digits on the right Shows the frequency for the intervals Make stem and leaf plot from the data above

Work with your groups to make a stem and leaf plot for the following data set: 52, 37, 39, 10, 29, 23, 45, 32, 57, 21, 22, 38, 41, 20 HISTOGRAM: Like a stem and leaf plot on its side

Bins should be between 4-8 Intervals: need to be the same number for every bin Bins need to be touching, with the interval under each bin

Make a histogram with your group on the same data set that you made a stem and leaf plot on. SKEWNESS AND SYMMETRY: Right and left

Symmetric

EXIT SLIP: Find the mean, median, and mode and turn it in before you leave! Thanks and remember to do your homework! 13, 15, 31, 25, 22, 19, 25, 27
