Description and Background Information

The teacher will start the lesson by playing a video on themes. The teacher will then go over a short powerpoint with the students. For the guided activity, the teacher will read a short story and the students will complete a worksheet.

How will I vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material? How will I vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept? How will I vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English? For students who are having difficulty grasping this concept, I will provide them extra one on one assistance. For students who have mastered this concept, I will provide them with more advanced examples and have some students work with others to provide assistance. For students who are learning English, I will work with the ELL teacher and provide those students extra time to learn the concepts during their time with the ELL teacher. In addition, I will allow those students to use computer enrichment tools for extra assistance.

How will I find out what students already know about this topic? Before starting the lesson I will introduce what we will be discussing and let them discuss what they think the book we will read is about. Then I will ask the students to give their own definitions of what a theme is. What will I do to make a connection between students and this lesson? A video on themes will be shown giving the students some prior knowledge on themes. What will I say to explain the importance of learning this lesson? Knowing the theme of a story or a poem will help you in gaining what the author intended you to get from reading their work. What will I do to show students what is expected? I will demonstrate how to give a correct recollection of a story as well as tell the theme of a story.

What will we do together as they learn how to succeed at the new task? The teacher will read a short book and students will complete a worksheet finding the theme of the story, the plot, setting, and what the character learned. During the lesson I will check students work to make sure they are on task and assist them if they are having difficulty. What will students do to internalize the knowledge? Students will be given a weekly assessment on each standard. How will I conclude the lesson and relate it to future experiences? Every student will tell what they learned about themes and why it is imporntant to find the theme of literature works.. What can students do at home or in the classroom to apply the knowledge or skills? What will you do to connect the lesson with the home, community and community agencies? Students will be asked to find themes of various movies, books, and chapters in books and movies we have read in class. How is technology meaningful to this lesson? How do you plan to use implement student used technology during the lesson? The teacher will use a powerpoint. The students will be able to use computers during morning enrichment time. Through all content areas learning the theme of what is being taught will help students to know what they are trying to learn and how to comprehend the information that is being given to them.

What worked for you during the lesson? What did not work? What changes would you make when you teach this lesson again to make it more effective?

During the lesson my initial hook grasped the students attention and made them interested in the lesson. Also through my lesson the students successfully grasped what a theme was. Overall I believe everything worked in my lesson. If I had to change anything I would of found a longer book and have the students read the book aloud instead of me doing so.
