Figure 1 A composite bar is formed from two materials A and B as shown in Figure 1. Material A has an elastic modulus of 10000 MPa while material B has an elastic modulus of 25000 MPa. The stress strain relationships for the two materials are shown in Figure 1. The stress strain relationships are not the same in tension and compression. Material B has a yield stress of 100 MPa in tension. A moment is applied that causes tension at the bottom of the crosssection. Determine: (i) (ii) The moment to cause the extreme fibre in material B to reach its yield stress of 100 MPa. Calculate the position of the neutral axis, the top fibre stress in material A and the moment when material B has reached its yield stress for a distance of 50 mm from the bottom of the cross-section. Draw the stress and strain distribution.
