Time to get ready for PASS Testing! This test is a state mandated testing program, and it is administered to all students in grades 3, 4, and 5. It consists of several subtests, and the dates for each test are listed below: Tue., May 7 ELA test Wed., May 8 Math test Thur., May 9 Science test for grade 4 Science OR Social Studies test for grades 3 & 5 Fri., May 10 Social Studies for grade 4 All students will make up any test sessions that are missed. Be sure to schedule appointments and any other out-of-school activities for another day. We begin testing at 8:00 a.m. so make sure your child is well-rested and on time. Have your child eat a healthy and filling breakfast. Also, be reminded that students are not permitted any electronic devices during testing. This includes cell phones, calculators, and watches with alarms. Encourage your child to do his/her best on the tests, and send them off with a smile and some positive words of support for performing their best and leaving a PAWSitive print!

Relays, tug-of-war, obstacle courses, a dunking booth with some surprise people to get dunked, and so much more In order for this to be the best event for our kids there are a few things that we will need: It is probably going to be HOT! We will need the children to bring a water bottle for their outside activities We also need VOLUNTEERS!!! You will only have to volunteer for a day! Come on out and enjoy watching all the kids have a blast! There will be more news about FUN and FIELD DAY to come as the date gets closer. A limited number of yearbooks are still available for purchase. The price for yearbooks is $30.00. Please note that icons, personalization, and online ordering are no longer available. Order forms are available in the office and on the schools website.

The Music Note . . .


Dutch Fork Elementary is having our annual Talent Shows on Wednesday, May 29 and Monday, June 3. The Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade show will be at 9:00 AM and the 3rd and 4th grade show will be at 12:45 PM on May 29, and the 5th grade show will be at 9:15 AM on June 3. Our talent shows are not competitions. Any student that wishes to participate may do so, but must follow the following requirements:
1. All acts are limited to TWO (2) minutes in length. 2. Students may participate in a solo or group act. All groups in grades K-4 must be made up of students in the same homeroom. 5th graders may form a group with any student in their grade. 3. Music, costumes, and dance style must be appropriate for all ages and are subject for review by the music teacher and the school administration who have the right to decline or accept it. Approval will take place at the Previews (see below). 4. Any music must be prepared by you on a CD or I-Pod to include a stop-time at TWO (2) minutes maximum. You must have your music with you at the Previews. If you are going to be singing, try to do so to an instrumental version of the song if you feel confident. We want to hear YOU!!! Duplicate entries of a song will be resolved on a first come first serve basis. If you are planning to perform a popular song, have a back-up plan! 5. Previews will take place during music class for grades K-4. This is when you will show what you will be performing in the talent show. The dates for Previews are April 29-May 10. This is a two week period. Students may perform during their music class during these two weeks. All participants in grades K-4 MUST HAVE DONE THEIR PREVIEW BY FRIDAY, May 10. NO PREVIEWS WILL BE DONE AFTER MAY 10!!! 6. 5th grade previews will be before school any morning and after school on Mondays and Fridays during the April 29-May 10 dates. 5th graders will arrange a time with Mrs. Rushe to complete their Preview.

Mrs. Cosbys 4th Grade Class Celebrates Earth Day!


Students in Mrs. Cosbys class have been challenged to have a no waste lunch week! They will read

The Diary of a Worm

and talk about the importance and purpose of worms, study the sensory organs of worms, create scientific sketches and then compost their vegetable matter and create worm bins with recycled paper, fruit peels, and cores! Sounds like fun doesnt it?! We have millipedes who have eaten some of our banana peels already, states Mrs. Cosby. They will create a terrestrial environment with soil and their compost mixture and gift their administrative assistant a plant to celebrate all she contributes to the school!

MUSIC: Music/song must be approved by the music teacher and administration for its appropriateness for Talent Show. It must be appropriate for elementary school-age values. There is to be NO suggestive lyrics or profanity, and the words must be able to be understood. DANCE STYLE: Dance style must be approved by the music teacher and administration for its appropriateness for the Talent Show. There is to be NO dance moves or motions inappropriate for elementary school-age children (i.e. hip movement, hand placement, etc.). DRESS: DFES will follow the Student Dress Code of the Student Behavior Code booklet of Lexington/Richland District 5. If you are going to wear a costume, you must have it approved at the Previews. Once approved, you must wear the same costume for the Talent Show as was presented at Previews. The Talent Show will be here before you know it so begin planning and preparing for your act now!

Media Center Happenings . . . Lets Go Out To The Ball Game!!


On June 11 students who have participated in the Blowfish Baseball Reading Rewards Program will get to see the Columbia Blowfish compete against Red Wolves of Florence. Read 1 book = 2 tickets to the ballgame Read 2 books = 4 tickets to the ballgame Read 3 books = 4 tickets to the ballgame and an opportunity to march in the pre-game parade Read 4 books = 4 tickets to the ballgame, opportunity to march in the pre-game parade and receive a voucher for a free hot dog and soda Students will bring their completed bookmark to the Capital City Ballpark at 301 S. Assembly Street in Columbia. They will go to the Reading Program Table by the ticket office to receive their food voucher if they read 4 books and game tickets. STUDENTS NEED TO BE AT THE BALL PARK BY 6:00 to participate in the parade before the game. The game starts at 7pm.

Summer Camp Rates:

Open 7:30 a.m. 6:00 p.m.

Registration Fee (New Students Only): $50.00 (non-refundable) FULL-TIME: $110/per week + FREE Registration* (Must commit to at least 8 weeks) Or $25/per day + FREE Registration* (An advance $10 is necessary per week your child will attend, to hold his/her space and to insure enough staff coverage for that week) Therefore the week the child attends his/her fee would be $100.**

On-site Vendors and Explorations may include, but not limited to:
Riverbanks Zoo, Art Smart Academy, Un-Limited Hands on Science w/ Beaker Billy, USC Columbias Cooking, Karate, ACX Cheer, Dutch Fork Basketball, Marionette Puppets and Magic Shows!!!!

Compass Learning and tutoring sessions (at no extra cost) with certified district teachers!! At least once a week outside water activities!! Weekly current Movies will be shown on FUN FRIDAYS!!! Chairperson Parent VolunteerCommittee The chairperson shall be responsible for the recruitment of volunteers as necessitated by the school and the PTO. The Chairperson will select the grade level homeroom mother/father coordinators and the homeroom parent for each class and will coordinate classroomactivitieswitheachgradelevelcoordinator. Chairperson Hospitality Committee The chairperson shall be responsible for coordinating all projects designed to increase the morale of students, faculty, and volunteers, including American Education Week,TeacherAppreciationWeek,andStaffandTeacherbirthdays.Thiscommitteewillalsopurchase retirement gifts not to exceed $50.00 per faculty or staff member at the recommendations of the Principaland/ortheExecutiveBoard. Chairperson Yearbook Committee The Chairperson shall be responsible for all activities pertaining to the development and publishing of the Dutch Fork Elementary School Yearbook with input from a schoolstaffrepresentative. Chairperson Holiday Store Committee The Chairperson shall be responsible for planning, organizing, andoverseeingtheHolidayStoreactivities. Chairperson Business Partners Committee The Chairperson shall oversee the registration and participation with various business partners in collection and contribution events. Examples might include:Sonic,CarolinaWings,Brusters,andgrocerystoreprograms,ECT. Chairperson Box Tops/Campbell Soup Labels Committee The chairperson shall be responsible for registeringfor,organizing,collectingandmailingtheBoxTopsandCampbellSoupLabels. Chairperson 5th Grade Picnic/Graduation Committee The Chairperson shall be responsible for the planning,organizing,andoverseeingthe5thGradePicnic/Graduation. Chairperson Spiritwear Committee The chairperson shall be responsible for planning, purchasing, organizingandsellingallSpiritWareproductsandevents. ChairpersonFallFestivalCommitteeThechairpersonshallberesponsibleforplanning,organizing,and overseeingtheFallFestival.
