Mechanical Engineering VI SEMESTER HEAT & MASS TRANSFER
(Effective from the admitted batch 200809)

Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Instructions: Each Unit carries 12 marks. Answer all units choosing one question from each unit. All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only. Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted. Note: Heat and Mass Transfer Data Books to be allowed --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------UNIT-I 1. a) Derive expressions for temperature distribution during steady state heat conduction in a solid sphere with internal heat generation 6 b) A hollow sphere 10cm internal diameter and 30cm outer diameter of a material having thermal conductivity of 50 W/mK is used as a container for a liquid chemical mixture. Its inner and outer surface temperatures are 3000C and 1000C respectively. Determine the heat flow rate to the sphere. Also estimate the temperature at a point a quarter of the way between the inner and outer surfaces, from outer surface 6

2. a) Explain lumped parameter analysis of heat conduction in solids b) A Solid steel, 160mm long cylinder with a 80mm diameter initially at 8000C, is cooled in a medium which is at constant temperature of 300C. The surface heat transfer coefficient is 120 W/m2 K. Determine the centre line temperature at the midpoint of length 30 minutes after cooling is initiated. Take = 0.022 m2/hr, k = 23.5 W/mK

UNIT-II 3. a) What is Reynolds analogy? Describe the relation between fluid friction and heat transfer b) Water at 500C enters a 1.5cm diameter and 3m long tube with a velocity of 1m/s. The tube wall is maintained at a constant temperature of 900C. Calculate the heat transfer coefficient and the total amount of heat transferred if the exit water temperature is 640C
OR

4. A 30 cm long glass plate is hung vertically in the air at 300 K (270 C). The plate is maintained at 356 K (770 C). Calculate the average heat transfer coefficient for natural and forced convection with free stream velocity of air = 4 m/s. Take the properties of air at 325 K (520 C) as v = 18.41 x 10-6 m2/s, k = 28.5 x 10-3 W/(m.K) NPr = 0.7, = 3.077 x 10-3 K-1 12 UNIT-III 5. a) Enumerate the salient features of thermal radiation b) Explain the terms, absorptivity, reflectivity and transmissivity. How are they related to each other for a black body? c) What do you understand by black body and gray body?

6. a) Write notes on (i) Radiation shields (ii) Flame radiation b) Two parallel discs of 1m diameter are situated 2m apart in surroundings at a temperature of 200C. The inner side of one disc has an emissivity of 0.5 and is maintained at 5000C by electric resistance heating and the outer side of the disc is well insulated. The other disc is open to radiation on both sides and reaches an equilibrium temperature. Calculate this equilibrium temperature and the heat flow rate from the first disc assuming heat transfer is entirely by radiation UNIT-IV 7. a) How are exit fluid temperatures determined with the help of -NTU method?

b) A counter flow heat exchanger operates using river water as coolant. During the winter, water is available at 7.50C. The heat exchanger cools 2000 kg/hr of oil (cp = 2.5 kJ/kg-K) entering at 2050C to 1000C. Find the water flow rate and NTU
OR

8. a) What are the different regimes of boiling and explain the boiling phenomena in pool boiling? b) A 10mm dia, ground and polished stainless steel tube ( = 0.05) is maintained at a surface temperature of 3000C while boiling water at atmospheric pressure. Identify the regime of pool boiling and calculate heat flux and heat transfer coefficient UNIT-V 9. a) Define mass transfer coefficient and discuss the analogy between convective mass transfer and convective heat transfer b) Estimate the diffusion rate of water at 300C from the bottom of a test tube 20mm in diameter and 40mm depth into dry air at 300C. Take the diffusion coefficient of water in air as 0.26 x 10-4 m2/s
OR

10. a) Discuss in detail the analogy between heat, mass and momentum transfer b) A mixture of O2 and CO2 is kept in a container at 200C and 150kPa. The mean velocity of O2 is 0.08m/s and that of CO2 is -0.02 m/s. If the molar fraction of O2 is 0.4, determine i) molar fraction of CO2 ii) mass concentrations of O2 and CO2 iii) mass fluxes of O2 and CO2
