On the Field with Alex Rodriguez by Matt Christopher

My name is Alex Rodriguez, and I play baseball. I was born in New York City in 1975. My parents were from the Dominican Republic. They moved to New York to find work and to have a better life. My dad owned a shoe store. When I was four my dad retired, and we moved back to the Dominican. In the Dominican baseball is popular. Many kids learned to play at an early age because it is warm all year round. I started playing baseball with older boys in local parks when I was just four. I could hit a homerun at six. Many young Dominican boys dreamed of making it in the big leagues someday. When I was eight I moved back to the United States. My dad needed to work again, and he opened up another shoe store near Miami, Florida. When I went to high school my mom chose a private school. My mom had to start working to let me go there. I went to Westminster Christian Academy. The school was much smaller than local public schools. They had a great baseball program. Baseball scouts were looking for some good players. They came to watch me play one afternoon. I did great. I hit one homerun and didnt make any errors. About one year later I had over 20 scouts watching me. I had a few phone calls from minor league teams, but it turns out I went to the Seattle Mariners single A team. In a few months I moved up to the double A team. I played there for about a year. Scouts were wanting me to go to the major leagues. Some people didnt think I was ready. I moved on up to triple A ball, and thats when it got challenging. I played there for about a year. One day I got a phone call from the Mariners major league team. They wanted me to play with them. I accepted the offer. I played for a few months and then I went back down to the minor league triple A team again for about a year. I later went back up to the major league and played for a few more years with the Mariners. It is not unusual for professional ball players to move around a lot. One day the Texas Rangers called me and wanted me to play with them for 252 million dollars. I took the money and signed with the Rangers. I played really good there. About four years later the New York Yankees

wanted me to play with them. They traded two players and a lot of money for me. I have played third base with the Yankees since 2004. I was very successful last year, and I helped my team win the MLB World Series. I am living my dream and doing what I love. I hope to make Yankee fans happy for many more years.
