Stevie Williams About Me January 28, 2013 English 3003

My name is Stevie Williams and I am a senior at the University of Tulsa and will be graduating with a Baccalaureate in Nursing in May 2013. Growing up I always wanted to become a doctor. I wanted to help people who were sick and at a most vulnerable point in their life. It was not until I had my first experience in a hospital, giving birth to my son, I came to the realization that it is the nurses who care for the patients, the nurses who make the difference in their patients lives. After a lengthy and complicated stay in the hospital, I knew what I was to do. I focused myself and worked hard at being a mom and a student collecting the classes I needed to apply to a good nursing school. I was accepted to The University of Tulsa School of Nursing in 2010 and started classes that fall. Along this journey I have learned that being a mom, wife, and full-time nursing student is the most demanding job, but I have learned to manage my time efficiently and all the hard work is about to pay off. I have two children, so taking care of kids feels natural to me; therefore I am interested in working in the pediatric population. The pediatric intensive care unit is the area I am most interested in. In the past three years at The University of Tulsa I have acquired a solid foundation of nursing skills and knowledge. I look forward to expanding my skills and knowledge when hired as a new nurse. I have met many challenges in nursing school; balancing my home life with my school life, finding time to study and write care plans, but I have always made room for everyone in my life and everything that is important to me. My ability to balance different areas of my life and manage my time effectively will be especially useful when I work as a nurse. During my junior year of nursing school I served on the BSN council as the student representative for the junior class. Duties of the BSN representative consisted of attending meetings once a month, relaying concerns or comments from the junior class about the nursing program or classes to the board of professors, and commenting on issues when approached. During my three years as a nursing student, I have been a member of the TU Student Nurses Association and senior year I was elected Vice President of the association. Duties of the Vice President include attending meetings, helping to plan future meetings, filling in and chairing meetings in the absence of the President, and any other duties asked to fulfill. I have been well prepared for a job as an RN by taking classes in leadership and management as well as the core physiology and anatomy and nursing courses required. I look forward to meeting my professional as well as personal goals in the nursing profession.
