A Q&A with Lane Smith

Q: In todays plugged-in world, why do you feel that books are so important? A: I think reading is important, whether from a book or an electronic device. As for the importance of books specifically? I can only answer
for myself. I prefer books. I grew up with printed matter and I prefer to read that way. I like the feel of different paper stocks and I like the experience of physically turning the page. I hope readers of Its a Book will share a similar experience. Lane Smith is a best-selling author and illustrator of more than two dozen books for children, including the Caldecott-winning The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales.

Dear Parents, Teachers, and Lovers of Childrens Books,

When I first read Lane Smiths Its a Book, I laughed out loud. Really loud. With rapier wit, Lane has managed to capture the ongoing debate over digital versus print technology that we as parents, educators, and booksellers are thinking about more and more. What does the future of reading hold for our children? Although none of us have a crystal ball, there are some promising signs. A 2010 study of childrens picture book consumers found that families consider books to be more important in their childrens life than a wide variety of other media including TV, video games, and online offerings. On the developmental side, there is a persuasive argument being made for picture books as the perfect tool for preparing children for a highly visual digital future. Of course, thats no surprise to those of us who have known all along that great childrens books prepare kids for every future, digital and otherwise. Reading books together with your kids helps them build all the skills they will need for e very eventuality: Attention, Empathy, Creativity, Imagination, Writing, Storytelling, Self-Awareness, Logic, Collaboration, Community, and Critical Thinkingin short a tool box for the 21st Century. And once they get going with books, its hard to stop. If you dont believe me, just ask Donkey. Best wishes to you and yours for a happy year full of great reading (and growing),
