Mix It Up!
Question: What is a mixture? How can you separate mixtures? Materials: 1 small paper cup per group member filled with trail mix 1 paper towel per group member Jobs: (see Mrs. Sutton) Team Captain Materials Manager Recorder ReporterSafety Procedures: 1. No horse play during experiment! Consequences will include not being able to participate in experiment, resulting in the completion of a written summary of the Matter chapter in the science textbook. 2. All people must only do their job. 3. No loud conversations. Remember other groups will need to figure out what is happening in their experiments, too. 4. Work in your own group and not someone elses. 5. All spills and accidents must be reported to a teacher, and then cleaned up immediately. Expectations: 1. All students are expected to participate. 2. All students are expected to follow safety procedures. 3. All students are expected to help answer questions. 4. Teachers are expected to observe and help as needed but NOT to give answers. 5. Teachers will be grading according to the rubric. Directions: Team Captain- read safety procedures, expectations, and directions to the team and be sure all safety procedures are followed- any violation must be reported to a teacher. Experiment Directions: 1. Materials Manager #1- make sure that each group member has one paper cup filled of the way with trail mix. 2. Ask question, What is a mixture and how can I separate mixtures? 3. Record Reporter #1- record hypothesis as to what will happen when you try to separate the mixture. 4. Perform experiment. 5. Everyone- One at a time, separate the different parts of the mixture onto the paper towel. 6. Recorder Reporter #2- record observation on student sheet. 7. Discuss what was observed- was the hypothesis correct? 8. Recorder Reporter #3- write conclusion. Include key words such as: solid, mixture, particles. Also, record what fraction of the trail mix are marshmallows? Cheerios and raisins? How much trail mix would there be without the pretzels? 9. Materials Manager #2- clean up by eating the trail mix (or put it in a Ziploc bag) and throw all empty paper cups inside the garbage can.
Station # 6
Experiment Directions: 1. Recorder write hypothesis on Can we separate the salt from the water with other means except evaporation? Write prediction and answer question Why. 2. Fill cup half way with water 3. Add table spoon of salt and mix 4. Attempt to remove salt using filter 5. Record observation 6. Answer why or why not you could not remove salt from water 7. Does this make our experiment a solution or mixture 8. Evaporation could take a long time to happen depending on how much water you have in the cup. Is there another way to cause evaporation in a very short time? (Hint: Heat)
Experiment: 1. Record hypothesis if temperature affects mixing of a solution 2. Take two cups fill half way 3. Label one cup A and the other B 4. In cup A put a spoonful of ice. Mix until ice is melted and repeat. 5. In cup B do not put any ice 6. Put a spoonful of sugar in both cups 7. Timer time how long it takes for the sugar to mix with the water 8. Record the time difference 9. Answer question, Would hot water make a difference in the rate of dissolving?
Experiment: 1. Recorder write hypothesis on what will happen to the water level when an object is dropped into it. 2. Fill measuring cup half way with water 3. Record amount of liquid 4. Drop object into the water 5. Record amount of liquid 6. Answer, What caused the water level to rise? and Do we now have more water than before? Why or Why not?
