Its a Matter of Space

Question: Can a balloon be inflated completely inside a bottle? Materials: 1 un-inflated balloon per person 1 empty 16 ounce bottle Jobs: (see Mrs. Sutton) Team Captain Materials Manager Recorder ReporterSafety Procedures: 1. No horse play during experiment! Consequences will include not being able to participate in experiment, resulting in the completion of a written summary of the Matter chapter in the science textbook. 2. All people must only do their job. 3. No loud conversations. Remember other groups will need to figure out what is happening in their experiments, too. 4. Work in your own group and not someone elses. 5. All spills and accidents must be reported to a teacher, and then cleaned up immediately. Expectations: 1. All students are expected to participate. 2. All students are expected to follow safety procedures. 3. All students are expected to help answer questions. 4. Teachers are expected to observe and help as needed but NOT to give answers. 5. Teachers will be grading according to the rubric. Directions: Team Captain- read safety procedures, expectations, and directions to the team and be sure all safety procedures are followed- any violation must be reported to a teacher. Experiment Directions: 1. Materials Manager #1- make sure that each group member has one un-inflated balloon and one 16 ounce bottle. 2. Ask question, Can a balloon be inflated completely inside a bottle? 3. Record Reporter #1- record hypothesis as to what will happen when you try to blow up the balloon inside the bottle. 4. Perform experiment. 5. Everyone- blow up the balloon one time to test for defects/holes. If there is a problem, please see a teacher for another balloon. 6. Put the balloon inside the bottle (see example) and attempt to blow the balloon up. 7. Recorder Reporter #2- record observation on student sheet. 8. Discuss what was observed- was the hypothesis correct? 9. Recorder Reporter #3- write conclusion. Include key words such as: gas, solid, volume, matter, mass, 10. Materials Manager #2- clean up by throwing all balloons and bottles inside the garbage can.
