Lesson Topic: Woodwind Family of Instruments Length of lesson: 3 days

Grade level: 3-5 th

Stage 1 Desired Results Content Standard(s): M3GM.6: Listening, analyzing, and describing music c. Identify and classify classroom and various orchestral instruments by sight and sound. Performance: Determine which instrument should go in which case by looking at the picture and reading the listed facts. Standard: You will be graded based on a given answer key Performance Task #2: Goal: Describe the emotions or feelings that can be expressed through playing a woodwind instrument. Role: You are to imagine that you are a woodwind instrument of your choice. Audience: Musical listeners Situation: You are an instrument from the woodwind family and you are trying to explain to your audience how it feels when you play music and what emotions you express when you play. Performance: Create a Power Point presentation using pictures and words to describe the feelings that your music can express. Include basic information about you, as the instrument, at the beginning of the presentation. Standard: Power Point presentation will be graded by a given rubric.

Stage 3 Learning Plan Learning Activities: Day One 1. Ask the students if they know the names of the different families of instruments. 2. List the families of instrument names: Woodwind, Brass, String, and Percussion. 3. Explain to the students that today we will be learning about the Woodwind family of instruments. 4. Show the students the podcast created about the Woodwind family of instruments. 5. Discuss the podcast for a few moments. Ask the students to share what they now know about the woodwind instruments and give reasons to support what they know. 6. Give the students the Performance Task One Instruction sheet. Go over the instruction sheet together. Then, pass out the Mixed-Up Instrument sheet. Play the podcast again while the students have the sheet in front of them. The student will complete the sheet, then turn it in to be graded against the answer key. 7. Before they leave, ask each student to write down which instrument they would choose to be if they could become an instrument for a day. Collect these up. They will be used for tomorrows performance task. Day Two 1. As a review of yesterdays material, give the students the Woodwind Family Questions sheet. Play the podcast for a third time. They must answer the questions based on the information in the podcast. 2. Collect up the question sheets, then re-distribute them so that each student has someone elses sheet. Go over the correct answers, having the students check for the right answers. 3. Play sound clips of each instrument from the woodwind family. Sound clips can be found at the following location, which contains a Pathfinder: http://woodwindsounds.wikispaces.com/home As they listen to each sound clip, they will be told which instrument is being played. Ask the students to write down the emotions that they feel are being conveyed by each instrument as it plays. How does each instrument convey certain emotions? 4. Place the students into small groups of 3-4 individuals. Groups are determined based on the students responses the previous day to what instrument they would become for a day. Groups will try to be formed based on similar instrument choices. 5. Give to the students the Performance Task #2 Instruction sheet. The students are to create a power point presentation, describing the emotions and feelings that their instrument of choice can express. They must find pictures and use word to express these emotions. Play the podcast one final time so they can jot down the basic information about their instrument, which must be included in the power point presentation. Day Three

1. Allow the groups a few minutes more to finish the power point presentations. 2. The groups will begin sharing the power point presentations. 3. As a follow-up activity to the presentations, the students will answer the following questions on a sheet of paper to be turned in: a. Pick 2 instruments from the woodwind family. Compare and contrast the instruments based on their size, shape, sound produced, way they are played, and emotions that are evoked from their playing. b. What do I need to learn to be more familiar with the instruments in the woodwind family? 4. Give the students the following address to a Pathfinder resource with links to webpages for additional information on Woodwind Instruments: woodwindresources.wikispaces.com/home

Performance Task #1 Instruction Sheet 1. Now that you have seen the Woodwind Family podcast and we have had a discussion, you need to imagine that you have just come into the band room for some extra rehearsal time and Mr. Dukes is very upset. The last band class was careless with the instruments and didnt pay attention to where they were putting the instruments. Instruments were in the wrong cases, and Mr. Dukes does not have time to get them all back in their correct places by himself. He has asked you to help him out. To make it easier when putting up the instruments there is a picture of the instrument at each case and some basic facts about the instrument. Use these clues to help get the instruments back in their correct place. 2. Complete the worksheet, Musical Instrument Mix-Up to show which instruments you put in which case. Use the clues and pictures to guide you. 3. Turn in the worksheet for a daily grade which will be graded according to an answer key. Performance Task #2 Instruction Sheet As a group, listen and watch the podcast again, paying particular attention to your chosen instrument. Take notes, if necessary, about your chosen instrument. Discuss, as a group, what emotions your instrument can evoke from a listener. See if there is any research or articles to support your opinion. Locate pictures that can create a visual image for the emotion/emotions that your instrument can evoke. Save the pictures in a folder for later use in your Power Point presentation. Create phrases that can also symbolize the emotion(s) that you have agreed upon. Using this information, create a Power Point presentation on your instrument. You must include the following: a. Title slide b. Basic facts about your instrument at the beginning of the presentation c. 5-6 slides, minimum, that have one image per slide and one phrase per slide that represent the emotion(s) your instrument can evoke. d. Works cited slide at the end of the presentation Check your Power Point presentation against the given rubric. Be ready to present your presentation to the rest of the class. Each member of the group must describe at least one slide.
