SPOTLIGHT ON HAITI DISASTER MEDICAL RELIEF MISSION SUPPORT Tim Rice, MD, associate professor, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, is leaving for Haiti on February 4, 2010 and will return to patients at Saint Louis University on February 16, 2010. Please see the next issue of the departmental newsletter (March 2010) for a review of this trip and photos. 14TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL VISITING PROFESSOR IN HEPATOLOGY Ding-Shinn Chen, MD, professor of medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital was the 14th International Visiting Professor in Hepatology. Dr. Chen presented GI Grand Rounds on December 3, 2009, Internal Medicine Grand Rounds on December 4, 2009, and GI Research Conference on December 4, 2009. Although he was kept quite busy during his visit, he also had time to do some sightseeing in St. Louis. It has just been announced that Professor Geoffrey Dusheiko, Royal Free Hampstead Hospital, The Sheila Sherlock Liver Centre, London, England has agreed to be the 15th Annual International Visiting Hepatologist, December 2-5, 2010.

NEW FACULTY MEMBER DIVISION OF GERIATRIC MEDICINE The Division of Geriatric Medicine is pleased to announce the return of Frederick Yap, MD. Dr. Yap joined the faculty of Saint Louis University School of Medicine in January 2010. He completed his fellowship training in geriatrics in 1999, his Internal Medicine Residency in 1998, and served as Chief Resident from 1997-1998. Dr. Yap will be seeing patients at Saint Louis University Hospital, the DOB, Des Peres Hospital ACE (acute care for the elderly) Unit and in our Des Peres Senior Care Outpatient Clinic. Please help us in welcoming Dr. Yap back to our Division and to the Department of Internal Medicine. DIVISION OF PULMONARY, CRITICAL CARE AND SLEEP MEDICINE UPDATE George M. Matuschak, MD, professor and director, participated in a Special Emphasis Panel/Scientific Review Group of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (2010/01 ZHL1 CSR-H (F1) 1): Phase II Clinical Trials of Novel Therapies for Lung Diseases (U01) on November 5, 2009. Dayton Dmello, MD, fellow, presented Efficacy of Inhaled Hypertonic Saline in Reducing Exacerbations of Cystic Fibrosis Lung Disease which will also be published in the CHEST on line supplement in the October edition. Mingchen Song, MD, fellow, presented Mycobacterium triplex Lung Disease in an Immunocompetent Host during the Mycobacterial Mysteries session. Dr. Song also presented Lung Abscess with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Mycobacterium avium complex, and Nocardia spp. in a Patient with Kartageners Syndrome during the Miscellaneous Marvels session. Ashutosh Sachdeva, MD, assistant professor, moderated the Mycobacterial Mysteries session. Carl Kaplan, MD, professor, was selected to give the lecture on Waveform Analysis during Mechanical Ventilation as well as teaching the ultrasound course in the ACCPs Simulation Lab.
