B. Tech III Year II Semester (R07) Supplementary Examinations, April/May 2013 DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Use of IS 800-1984, IS 875 Part III, Steel Tables are permitted in the examination hall. Part A (Answer any one question, 1 x 32 marks) 1 Design a built up column composed of two channel sections placed back to back, carrying an axial load of 1300 kN. The effective length of the column is 5.95 m and fy = 250 N/mm2. Also design a single lacing system. Draw: (a) Sectional elevation of the column. (b) Cross section of the column. A column section ISHB 300 @ 63 Kg/ m with one cover plate 400 mm x 20 mm on either side is carrying an axial load of 2000 kN inclusive of self weight of base and column. Design a gusseted base for the column. Assuming the allowable bearing pressure on concrete as 4 N/mm2 and the bending stress in base plate as 185 N/mm2. Draw: (a) Side view of gusseted base. (b) Plan view of gusseted base. Part B (Answer any three questions, 3 x 48 marks) 3 (a) (b) Write about the classification of welds. Find the minimum size of the fillet weld required to connect the bracket plate to the column shown in figure stress in the weld is not to exceed 110 N/mm2.

Code: R7320103 4 A beam ISMB 600 @ 123 kgf/m has an effective span of 9 m. Two floor joists transmit the floor load at a distance of 3 m from each end. Determine the safe load which the two floor joists can transmit on the beam if the beam is effectively restrained laterally by the floor joists. (a) (b) Write about strength of member is axial tension. In a roof truss, a diagonal consists of an 18 A 60 mm x 60 mm x 8 m and it is connected to gusset plate by one leg only by 18 mm diameter rivets in one chain line along the length of the member. Determine tensile strength of the member. A tension member carrying a tension of 22.5 kN meets the principal rafter in a truss carrying a compressive force of 83.5 kN. Design the members. The panel length of the principal rafter is 1.75 m. Design also the welded joint if the tension member meets the principal rafter at right angles. Design a gantry girder of span 5 m to the following particulars: Capacity of crane = 300 kN Dead load of crane = 200 kN Weight to crab and accessories = 40 kN Minimum clearance between centre of gantry girder and crane hook = 1.25 m Distance between gantry rails Spacing of columns Wheel base = 18 m = 6m = 3.
