Rose Park Academy Rose Park Academy is a college preparatory academy that strives to provide quality educational programs

for the entire family and residents of our community. In the academy, children, youth, parents and adults in the Rose Park Community gives the opportunity to take classes from variety of subjects including science, language, athletics, dance, health, fitness and nutrition. The courses will be taught in academic English and Spanish anduse fun and interactive teaching methods to engage students. Rose Park Academy also offers university level classes (credit and non-credit) for parents and adults in our community. ***For class schedules, refer to the back of our booklet***. Registration for Rose Park Academy is $15. Scholarships are available. Elementary Youth Classes Science: Physics of Flight: Using toy helicopters as a guide, students will learn the physics and math of flight. Students will have an opportunity to build model aircraft, experiment, and problem solve through this interactive class. Recommended Level: Grades 4-6. Chemistry is for Girls: This is an introduction class to chemistry for girls. We will cover some of the basic fundamentals of chemistry through fun and engaging experiments and activities. We will challenge the stereotypes of what chemistry is and who chemistry is fornot only those who wear white coats and work in a lab, but those who are curious and explore the world around them. Recommended Level:

Pre-K Program: Early Childhood Program: The youngest members of our community have a place to call home on Saturday mornings. Students will learn the fundamentals of art exploration in this class. Recommended Level: Grades: Pre-K (2-5 Years). Dance: Break Dance and Hip Hop: Students will have an opportunity to learn about the fun and competitive break dance and hip hop scene. This is an active and participatory dance class intended to build strength and improve dance method and form. Recommended Level: Grades 4-6 Middle School and High School Classes Science: Biochemistry and Beauty: Through small group teaching and fun activities with cosmetics, girls in this class will learn about the chemistry behind the beauty industry. In addition, university students (female) will mentor the girls to promote careers and education in science. Recommended Level: Grades 7-12 Health: Anatomy and Physiology: Using real organs to learn, students will have an opportunity to dissect and study human anatomy and physiology. This interactive class will introduce students to careers in health science and medicine. Recommended Level: Grades 7-12 ACT, SAT, Honor and AP classes Support: The Westside Scholars: Through one-on-one interaction with university students and faculty, youth will get direct support for test preparation (ACT & SAT), Honors Classes Preparation, and College Preparation. Academic mentoring is also a highlight of the program. Recommended Level: Grades 6-12. Adult and Parent Classes Health: Anatomy and Physiology: Using real organs to learn, students will have an opportunity to dissect and study human anatomy and physiology. This interactive class will introduce students to careers in health science and medicine. Recommended Level: Adult

Athletics: Soccer for College: Youth will have a chance to play and practice soccer while working with university student athletes in learning about college preparation through sports. This class will focus on fundamentals of soccer and the pathways to college for student athletes. Recommended Level: Grades 1-6

Fitness and Nutrition: Nutrition, Fitness and Zumba: Students in this class will learn the foundations to a long-term healthy lifestyle through nutrition and fitness education. The focus of this class is to create an up-beat atmosphere through Zumba; its time to strengthen your mind and body. Recommended Level: Adult. Tobacco and Other Drug Prevention: Parents in this class will work directly with university students and faculty to learn methods for preventing drug use among youth and families. This course will include interactive presentations, discussions, and field trips. Recommended Level: Adult Language: English Language Classes: Students can choose between beginning and intermediate levels of English. Through this highly interactive and exploratory class, students will become comfortable and confident users of the English Language. Adults can learn English with hands-on activities and field trips in the community. Recommended Level: Adults Spanish Language Classes: Students can choose between beginning and intermediate levels of Spanish. Through this highly interactive and exploratory class, students will become comfortable and confident users of the Spanish Language. Adults can learn Spanish with hands-on activities and field trips in the community. Recommended Level: Adults University of Utah Classes: Rose Park Academy also offers University of Utah level courses (credit and non-credit) in partnership with the University of Utah College of Education and University Neighborhood Partners. The classes give parents and adults an insight to the issues impacting urban education. The classes are offered in academic Spanish and English language. Family Engagement : We know the importance of family and community. At the Rose Park Community School we work together to bring families, friends, and educators together with a variety of programs specific to the needs of our diverse community. Padres Anonimos/Parents Anonymous:For our Latino Parents, we offer discussions and support groups for parents experiencing family challenges, problems, or issues at home. We understand that being a parent doesnt come with a guide book and we want to provide a support for the parents in the community. We know that as parents we are the most influential people in our childrens lives. We want to offer all that we can to increase the success of the families in our community. Every Tuesday (during the traditional school calendar) 6:00- 7:30pm.Bring the kids-We provide childcare! Family Movie Nights: Maximize family time at the Rose Park Community School! We understand the difficulty of managing busy work and school schedules during the week, thats why we offer: Free Family Movie Nights! Take advantage of this opportunity to bond with family and friends in our community! Relax and take a load off while we entertain the family! Community Engagement How do we get families in the communities together? Rose Park is a community school that is utilizing its space to offer interesting, cultural, inclusive, and innovative programs for all ages. We are committed in bringing together family, culture, and school relationships in our community school.We want to use our existing resources to better build a thriving community of friends and positive relationships. Here are some of the new, fun and exciting activities we offer, each along with a brief description of program details. Rose Park Community Garden: This is a fun, new way to get our hands dirty! Combat spring fever and boredom and bring the kids out to our Community Garden. Learn how to plant, a garden while connecting with friends from the neighborhood. Kids of all ages will keep track of their plants growth, and learn the essentials of how the foods they eat are grown and are incorporated into their daily meals. Feel free to share seeds and special recipes. Take advantage of these precious one on one moments with your child. Get a chance to finally connect with your busy neighbors and community members. Also this early childhood program will give you the opportunity to engage with your childs teachers and anyone else involved in helping with your childs academic success. Innovative classes are conducted through fun multisensory activities for social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development. Student Engagement Westside Dance: Come learn a new style of dance! Our local cultures are what make our community so vibrant. Local dancers promote active culture in community by teaching folk dance. Mexican Folk Dance Practices every Thursday 5:30pm- 7:30pm (gym) There may be opportunities to perform at a later date with enough notice given. Let us know if you have any dance instruction suggestions or want to teach your own. Health and Medical IHC Community Clinic: Intermountain Health Care (IHC) has community benefit programs that function as a non-profit healthcare organization. Their mission is to improve the access of healthcare for low-income and uninsured families through community and school base clinics. Currently, Rose Park Community School has a schoolbased clinic that is funded by Intermountain Health Care Foundation. The goal of the clinic is to provide quality health care for the students of Rose Park Elementary, their families and the residents of Rose Park. Financial Assistance: To further combat the financial obstacles communities encounter in receiving quality health care, IHC has in place different forms of Discounts for Uninsured Patients. Uninsured hospital patients who do not qualify for other assistance programs (such as Medicaid, CHIP, etc.) receive an automatic 25% discount on their bill. These patients may also receive an additional 15% off their bill if full payment is made before service is provided (total discount: 40%), or an additional 5% off their bill if full payment is made within 30 days after service is provided (total discount: 30%). Comunidas Unidas/Communities United : Comunidas Unidas/Communities United is a an independent non-profit organization that strives to promote outreach programs in immigrant and refugee communities. Their mission is to eliminate ethnic disparities by promoting grassroots outreach, education, and capacity building, as well as advocating for long term policy change. They are currently doing two initiates know as Community Wellbeing and Community Organizing. Community Wellbeing: They have helped more than 100,000 immigrants and refugees and continue to provide culturally and linguistically quality health care services. Some of their programs include the following: Ventanilla de Salud / Health Booth Latina & Multicultural Breast Health Programs Prenatal and Preconception Program Nutrition & Obesity Program Community Organizing: They strive to unite individuals and organization in social justice advocacy to better the wellbeing of communities at large. They bring to the surface, problems and challenges faced by immigrant and refugee communities to better educated policy makers and community leaders for further reforms. They also help immigrants and refugees in knowing their rights and ways to be an active member of the society at large.
