A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This is the 6th lesson in a unit about the economy and money. In this lesson students will learn about the various resources used to make goods. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 3rd grade social studies textbook: communities, pages 292-295. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 3rd grade Skill Level: at grade level Grouping: whole group instruction, paired reading, and individual activity C. Materials: Houghton Mifflin 3rd grade social studies textbook: communities, pages 292-295 Social studies journals Pencils Glue Scissors Old magazines D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o E.9.3.1- identify needs as high priority wants, and wants as good, services and leisure activities

Student-Friendly Standards I will be able to distinguish between different types of resources used to make good.

E. Procedure: 1. Begin lesson by having a discussion about where goods are made. Ask students: o o What are blue jeans made from and where does the blue color come from? Table talk and make predictions on where you think blue jeans come from

2. Have table groups discuss predictions. Discuss as a whole group 3. Introduce vocabulary words to students who will write the words and definitions in the vocabulary section of their social studies journals ( human resources, natural resources, capital resources, factory and assembly line- definitions are on page T292) 4. Allow students to pair read pages 292-295 o Discuss with their partner if their predictions about jeans were correct

6. Students will create a comparison chart comparing human, natural and capital resources o Fold construction paper into thirds o Label each section- human resources, natural resources and capital resources o Write the definition of each in the appropriate columns o Use magazines to find examples of each (5-7 for each resource) Cut out and glue to the proper column 7. Students will share comparison charts with their table groups and whole class 8. CLOSURE: Students will write in their social studies journals: o o What happens in factories? Why do workers follow steps to make products?

F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will measure student understanding by using informal assessment through discussions and comparison chart along with journal entries. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know students understand these concepts when they can give examples of different kinds of resources and describe how goods are made. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think this entire lesson will be easy to teach. We have already talked about resources in previous units so I think this will be an easy concept to learn. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I dont think there will be a challenging part of this lesson to teach. I think students will really understand these concepts. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? We will talk about different kinds of resources in future lessons where we will touch on this lesson again. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I will pull small groups and work individually with students who dont understand the concepts being taught. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?

I dont think there is any part of the lesson that needs to be changed. I think students will be engaged in the lesson and will have fun looking through magazine to locate items that are made from different kinds of resources. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? There wasnt a difficult part of writing this lesson. In fact, this was an easy lesson to teach and coming up with a good activity was also easy to write.
