The Parish Pump was started in 1979 to provide a free community magazine in the parish. It began as, and still is, a joint venture, combining the church magazine and village magazine. The Parish Pump is sponsored by the Parochial Church Council and Debden Parish Council. Both bodies contribute financially to the cost of running the magazine by means of a donation, received annually. It is intended that the magazine reflects all aspects of village life within the parish and provides an opportunity for community matters to be raised. In addition to the information recorded in the magazine, our sister publication, the Debden Directory provides a host of useful contact numbers for services ranging from bus times, local plumbers, doctors and restaurants. If you do not have a copy, please contact a member of the committee.

A BOUT THE PUMP

The magazine has editors but no official reporters. Consequently, an interesting magazine depends on articles, news, etc. coming from people in the village. The th closing date for submitting material is: the 15 of each month. The editors job is to edit. This means fitting the material into the space available and trying to ensure there is a reasonable balance of views on controversial subjects etc. Consequently, it is not always possible to publish everything submitted and sometimes changes have to be made to the length of a contribution. Non topical articles cannot always be published in the next issue but will appear later unless you are told otherwise. Contributions of up to 400 words have a better chance of being published in full than longer ones. Please note that the present and past editions of the Parish Pump are now available on line on the new website www.debden.org and that any material submitted will be automatically featured on the website. If you wish to have your name and/or contact details (which must normally accompany any contributions) withheld from the printed edition and/or not to appear on the website, this must be stated at the time of submission. Copy for inclusion in the next edition should be emailed by the 5th of the month to;

editors@theparishpump.org.
There is also a folder in the shop for submission of written or typed copy. The current editors of the Parish Pump, who have the sole prerogative of the editorial policy (so dont blame anyone else) are; Mike Fairchild Ursula Lyons editor_mike@theparishpump.org editor_ursula@theparishpump.org

Advertising rates per issue are; full page 10.00; half page 8.00; quarter page or less 6.00. Full payment in advance and an electronic copy of the ad should be sent to the Editors or Treasurer by email. Cheques should be made payable to The Parish Pump The other Committee members include Chairman: Judith Forster chairman@theparishpump.org Treasurer: Alastair Donaldtreasurer@theparishpump.org Secretary: Marion Bamfield secretary@theparishpump.org Distribution: Caroline Burchalldistribution@theparishpump.org 2

E DITORIAL
Over the last three months I have been visiting Saffron Walden Museum, weekly as a volunteer and also taking grandchildren to some of the varied activities held at half terms and holidays. Its a very friendly, lively museum and it has been nominated for the 2013 Kids In Museums Family Friendly Award. To ensure success, there is a list of 20 ways to make a visit family friendly. Museums are required to be welcoming, to be positive, to play the generation game and share stories, to create a safe environment, to use their website and to reach beyond. When I heard that Debden had entered for the best village competition and had to satisfy five criteria, I was reminded of the Museums list. So much overlaps. For the village criteria, it is about people, activities and organisations that contribute to a welcoming, positive and friendly community life involving all generations, protecting the environment, planning forward looking projects and making Debden a special place. Of course, when we think about these criteria, they are not earth shattering; they are actually what village life has always been about: caring, involving, working, sharing. When we listen to Elisabeth Blackies talk on May 18th, Im sure well find these qualities have been in the village for many years. I think the thing is that in this modern fast paced life where the emails flood in, the mobile is always ringing, the car is always there to whisk us to places near and far, we sometimes forget to stop and focus on the essentials of life. Its important to ensure that we spend time doing things for, and with, others. To this end, theres plenty to do so that if, and when ,the judges for the Village Competition turn up, Debden will look spic and span. So lets make sure theres no litter lying around and the posters are all up to date. As well as that it would be good to attend the Annual Assembly on May 1st to keep up to date with happenings. It is to be hoped that both Saffron Walden Museum and Debden are successful in their competitions but what really matters is that we continue to focus on what we, as a village, have always been good at: making Debden a great place in which to live. An ex Prime Minister once said, We do not achieve happiness or salvation in isolation from each other but as members of society. We in Debden know that is right; the village has always worked as a community and that is what makes it special.

You are invited to the annual village meeting

Debden Annual Parish Assembly will be held on Wednesday May 1 at 8pm in the Village Hall. This is an open invitation to everyone in the village to hear what has been happening in Debden and what is planned. It will also be an opportunity to ask questions, to have your say as well as to chat with other villagers over a glass of wine. There will be presentations by the Parish Council and District and County councillors and a statement about plans for Debdens new village hall, which was the main topic last year. Copies will be available of reports by Debdens organisations and societies, which can be read out if requested in advance via the parish clerk. The annual assembly will be preceded at 7.30pm by the AGM of Debden Parish Council when the chairman, members and officers will be elected or re-elected. That meeting is open to the public. It is hoped there will be a big turnout, especially for the annual assembly, which is hosted by the parish council although not a council meeting. The assembly is for the village and by the village and an opportunity to demonstrate the kind of community spirit vibrant, enterprising and caring on which Debden will be judged in the Essex Village of the Year competition, reported on page 6. See you there! Alternative village hall plans investigated, Parish Council, page 34

Dear Editors The Debden Shop Quiz is held on the third Wednesday of every month in the Plough. Margaret and Stuart always provide a superb buffet and Val and Richard Cawte organise the questions. On the 17th April, the winning team, Jeeps, also won the jackpot and donated all 75 winnings to the shop. On behalf of the Shop very many thanks to everybody for your generosity and for making our quiz nights such fun. Next quiz is on Wednesday May 15 at 8pm. Jackie Gunn Thank you YUVA On behalf of Debden villagers, I would like to say a big thanks to Imhran and his staff at Yuva for their continuous support in raising funds for the new village hall. YOURE ON CAMERA! Debden CCTV equipment has been purchased with money (930) donated by The Searle Trust and installed on 27th March by engineers from Sygma. Three new cameras were installed outside the shop/hall and this will provide 24 hour surveillance around the areas of the shop, the playground and car park/sports pavilion. The shop has kindly agreed to house the equipment. It will be kept operational with regular maintenance checks. Stewart Luck

Debden enters Village of the Year competition

Never a dull moment was the theme of Debdens entry in this years
Essex Village of the Year and Best Kept Village competition run by the Rural Community Council of Essex. The judges are looking for evidence of the way in which quality of life in the village is enhanced by a vibrant, enterprising and caring rural community.
Selection as a village finalist is based on a written submission covering five questions: The way in which organisations and activities contribute to community life The contribution made by local businesses and services Activities that help protect the environment and make the village more sustainable How the village is kept informed about planning for the future of the community, and forward-looking projects And what makes Debden special and a good place in which to live

Cllr Stewart Luck, who is overseeing the application on behalf of the Parish Council said, We had just 200 words to answer each of the questions no small task considering the number of organisations in the village and the amount of activity that goes on. When we looked at the calendar over the last 12 months, we thought Never a dull moment summed up Debden pretty well. Interestingly, we were able to tick every box listing village facilities, including a shop, Post Office, village hall, school and recreation facilities. If Debden is selected as a finalist, judges will make a formal inspection, probably in June, when they will also interview a panel representing the villages various organisations. But, more importantly, the judges will also make an unannounced visit any time before that. This is a chance for Debden to show why its the best village in Essex, says Stewart. Weve got an enviable list of organisations and facilities and lots of evidence of a thriving community but it could be the simple things like litter, dog fouling or discarded garden rubbish that lets us down. And theres no time to be lost, so please look around your own property or village facilities that you use and make sure everything is as spic and span as possible. Further updates at the Annual Parish Assembly on May 1 and in the June Pump. 6

Bathurst Trust Almshouses A one bedroom Almshouse in Debden will be available for occupation by the end of March 2013.
Priority will be given to a potential resident that best meets the terms of the Charitys deed. This states that, to benefit from the provision of an almshouse, a person must be of modest means, over 60 years of age and resident in the Parish of Debden at the time of the appointment. If, after several months, the trust is unable to appoint a resident that exactly meets the terms of the Charitys deed, with the permission of the Charities Commission, the criteria for residence will be relaxed. Please contact Charles Murphy of the Bathurst Trust for more information. Email:charlie.mildam@googlemail.com Tel: 07500 830400 Registered Charity No.209710

Busy year for Village Hall despite its shortcomings

Debden Village Hall enjoyed another good year with continued support from its loyal users, said Steph Watson, chairman of the trustees at the Village Hall AGM. Income - 8,034 in 2012 compared with 5,931 the previous year exceeded expenditure. Donations from village events including the 2012 fete, Progressive Supper, dance show and quiz evenings at The Plough were credited to the new village hall fund. Storage continues to be a problem because of the confines of the building, which is some 90 years old. Pre-school remains the biggest user of the hall, with ballet classes, Mums and Tots and table tennis among other regular users. Usage remains high during weekdays and evenings but, compared with other halls, income falls short at weekends. Debden is not the first choice hall for glittering events but because we are quite cheap to hire, again when compared to other halls, we are a popular venue for small childrens parties where glitzy surroundings are not the main priority, said Steph. The trustees are committed to maintaining standards of cleanliness and decoration, working within obvious restrictions. The trustees took the decision that their main responsibility was to the users of the existing hall and for this reason they would distance themselves from the project for a new building whilst maintaining a watching brief. The trustees thanked Anne Cunningham, who has retired as trustee and treasurer, and welcomed new trustees Richard Cawte, Val Riley and Andrew Burchall, who was elected treasurer.

NEWS
NEW BRANCH PRESIDENT FOR DEBDEN RBL
Mr Michael Barton has just been elected Branch President of Debden Royal British Legion following the sad death of his predecessor, Mr Malcolm Skeat, in December last year. Michael joined Debden RBL in January 1990 and has already successfully held the posts of Vice-Chairman and Chairman. Michael served as a short term regular soldier in both the Dorset and Hampshire Regiments with postings to Austria, Hong Kong and Malaya between 1952 and 1955. His reserve regiment became the Die Hards (Middlesex) and on completion served two years with them in the Territorial Army. He is now the second oldest Middlesex badge holder in his Association branch at Hornsey, London. He has lived in Debden since 1971 and is retired after a career in the Printing Industry. Asked to comment on the election, the current Chairman, Colonel (Retd) Roger Burgess, said that he has the utmost respect for the new President and that he was looking forward to serving with him. He is the right man for the job, he concluded. Tour de potholes Potholes are not a joke but if there was a contest for the most riddled road in Essex, I would nominate Thaxted Road/Bolford Street between Debden and Debden Green. I counted and registered with Essex Highways 26 potholes that match the key criterion for action: depth and width of at least 50x70mm. I estimate that half of them could wreck a vehicles wheel or suspension and are life-threatening to bikers and cyclists, especially in the dark or when rainfilled. Highways website map shows only 10 recorded on this stretch of road in the last few weeks but, at the time of writing, none has been filled in. I have some sympathy for the Highways guys who filled 55,000 holes in the last year; have to make a risk assessment for each one; and cant use the quick-fix Jet Patcher in the wet. However, what makes this stretch of road even more dangerous is that it is used by large numbers of cyclists, including club racers, and rumour has it that it might even be on the Cambridge to London leg of the 2014 Tour de France. If something isnt done, Highways could be in for a wigging from Wiggins. Mike Fairchild 8

HILARYS ADDITIONAL NEW ROLE

The Reverend Hilary Davey, Team Vicar for Debden and Wimbish has just joined Debden Branch Royal British Legion to take on the role of Branch Welfare Officer. Originally from a Yorkshire background, Hilary moved from Hertfordshire to Saffron Walden 40 years ago following her marriage. Having trained at the East Anglia (now Eastern Region Ministry) Ministerial Course, Hilary was ordained in December 2001 and served her curacy at Saffron Walden before becoming Vicar at St Marys, Debden, in December 2007. She has been with Debden and Wimbish for five and a half years. Hilary Davey has three adult children and lives with her husband, Arthur, in Saffron Walden. She enjoys walking, sailing, gardening and painting. Her role of RBL Branch Welfare Officer will dovetail neatly into her normal pastoral duties as Parish Vicar. Asked to comment on this recent and significant addition, Debden Branch RBL Chairman Roger Burgess said, We are exceptionally fortunate to have a vicar of the calibre of Hilary Davey join our Branch. She will be a tremendous asset. Debden Branch RBL is now looking for a pair of volunteers to assist Reverend Hilary Davey in her role of Branch Welfare Officer. Anyone interested should contact the Branch Secretary, Mrs Chris Griffin (Tel: 01799 540587).

Dear Friends, As many of you know, we have had a wedding in our family. It was a lovely and very special day and such a joy to see our daughter looking so radiant and her husband so proud and happy. Planning and preparations started months ago and escalated as the day approached. It would be very easy to ask if it is worth spending so much time, effort and energy for just one day that is over so quickly. Reflecting on this question, I think the answer is yes it is worth all the effort and energy because the preparation is not just for the one day; it is a preparation for the whole of the rest of the couples lives, for they have promised to love, honour and cherish each other for the rest of their lives. For the wedding to come together well, the preparations have required thoroughness, attention to detail, care and thoughtfulness for each others desires and needs and a willingness to give of ones very best. It seems to me these are admirable qualities for a couple to cultivate if their marriage is to stand a chance of being life-long. They are also excellent qualities for parents to exhibit towards the children they love. Perhaps all preparations have a much more enduring result than we realise. Certainly gardeners will tell you that ground well prepared before anything is planted or sown will produce flowers, fruit and vegetables that delight for years. Those preparing for exams will discover that knowledge acquired after hours of learning, does not disappear, but comes in useful long after the exams are done! God must have spent an extraordinary amount of time and energy in creating the world, in showing us his love through his Son, in preparing the ground that we might have faith and believe in him. The results of his preparations will last forever! God bless you all. Hilary

D EBDEN L OCAL H IS TO RY R E C O R D E R S G ROU P The bad weather once again played havoc with our programme of events and we had to cancel the last talk scheduled for March 23rd at the last minute. The Committee has now decided to postpone my presentation of Debden: Portrait of an Essex Village: 1850 to 1950 to coincide with the Annual Meeting which, weather permitting, will take place on Saturday 18th May with the following timetable:

2.30pm Annual Meeting open to all with free admission. 3.30pm Presentation by Elisabeth Blackie admission: 1.50 for Members and 2.50 for Non-Members.

Tickets that were bought for March 23rd from the Village Shop and/or reserved to be collected at the door, will still be valid to be used on the day unless the holders advise us that they are unable to attend and wish to have a refund. There will be no tickets issued from the Village Shop this time, but admission can be paid for at the door. However, it would be helpful if you could let us know in advance if you are planning to attend either the Annual Meeting or the Presentation or both to enable us to plan the seating layout and the refreshments. The Committee would very much welcome any suggestions you may have with regards to future events and whether we have so far achieved the right balance of talks and exhibitions. In particular, please let us know what topics or subjects you would like to have featured in our future talks. I look forward to welcoming as many of you as possible on May 18. Elisabeth Blackie

Following on from our previous successful collections (we raised 390 from our October collection), Debden Pre-School is running another textile collection with Bag2School in order to raise funds for the new village hall. As well as raising vitally needed funds for the new village hall and pre-school, it also helps the environment by diverting unwanted textiles away from landfill. By getting involved in our Bag2School collection, you have an opportunity to sort through your cupboards and wardrobes and donate unwanted textiles in the bag provided this can include adults and childrens clothes, shoes (tied together please), hats, belts, bags, soft toys, curtains and bedding (not duvets or pillows). Bags will be delivered to houses over the next few weeks. If you fill the donation bag and still have more, then you can use any other bag to donate your items. Bag2School will be collecting from the village hall on Tuesday 14th May. Please bring your bags to the village hall before 9am on the 14th. If you cant drop off on this date, the village shop has kindly agreed to allow bags to be left there from Saturday 11th May. Many thanks indeed for helping us with this community fundraising opportunity.

News from Debden Pentecostal Church

Dear Friends,

We live in an age when there are very few voices of authority that we look up to and respect. It seems it was much the same when Jesus walked on this earth some 2000 years ago he was recognised as a person of authority. In Mark chapter 1 v22 it is recorded And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. The living word of God or the Bible still speaks to us today with authority and a set of absolute standards which we would do well both as a country and as individuals to heed. We are still without a pastor but are looking for someone suitable to take up the ministry here in Debden. In the mean time we continue to have a variety of visiting speakers from the locality and some from further afield.

Our evening services continue on the first and third Sundays of the month; see our advert for when they fall this month. Please do drop in and join with us.

God bless, Simon Gale

Hudson Taylor was born on May 21st 1832. He was a Christian missionary to China and founder of the China Inland Mission. Serving in China for 51 years, he brought over 800 missionaries to the country resulting in 18,000 Chinese converts to Christianity. Many thoughtful quotations are attributed to Taylor including the following: There are three great truths: 1st, That there is a God; 2nd, That He has spoken to us in the Bible; 3rd, That He means what He says. Redwings Rugby Tour, New York March 2013

The Redwings is the name adopted by the Station Rugby Team for Carver Barracks, Wimbish. The team is made up from both 33 Engineer Regiment (EOD), 101 Engineer Regiment (EOD) and Wimbish Station Support Unit. Ordinarily one might expect that the ability to draw on two Regiments may artificially increase any Station team sport. The hectic nature of the tasks given to everyone at Wimbish, however, ensure that every team, including the Redwings has to try extra hard to secure players and continuity. The opportunity to leave the hectic world of Wimbish behind for a week was utterly invaluable for the team. A few days of acclimatisation to the exceptionally cold weather as well as to get over jet-lag led us into the first training session in Central Park. A rare opportunity indeed. We played the first game against Union County which we won by a narrow margin; the second against White Plains where we were narrowly defeated.

By way of knowledge sharing, we were hugely privileged to meet the New York Police Department bomb squad, based within New Yorks 6th Precinct. The team were given a thorough explanation of their capabilities, especially in terms of their equipment, training and manpower. The visit to Ground Zero was the most thought provoking and humbling. I was genuinely surprised at how much reading the names of the 3000 or so victims personally affected me. No trip to New York would be complete without a trip to the Empire States Building. Having gone in uniform we were not expected to pay or to queue. The whole experience of being practically venerated by the public was initially embarrassing and then extremely humbling. The most rewarding element of the trip for me was the Rugby Outreach Scheme, enabled by Play Rugby USA. This scheme uses the values of rugby to assist very deprived areas by teaching the kids how to play rugby. With the games comes a significant value system which includes loyalty, physical courage, trust, team spirit. Having played rugby for 29 years ,it was hugely rewarding to be able to share some of my tips with the young people (14-18) that I had been sent to help . Major Ben Hawkins. OC 49 Fd Sqn (EOD) 32

Podium on debut weekend in FIA Formula 3 European Championship for Debdens Tom Blomqvist
Tom Blomqvist headed to Monza in Italy for the first round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship - billed as "the most competitive young talent series on the planet" - with high hopes of a strong result. After a challenging weekend, which saw heavy rain halt proceedings, Tom put in a solid performance with Eurointernational in a field of 30 drivers, to take a third place podium finish in the second race. Tom reported, I am very happy to come away from a difficult weekend in Monza with a podium during our first race weekend. Our pace was not as good as it should have been and that was a bit frustrating. However, we are working hard to improve that; we know what we have to do so we will look at the information now and concentrate on that. The conditions on track were really difficult so to come away with points is a good first event. Looking ahead to Silverstone, the team and I are confident we know what the issues are, so we will be looking for more podium finishes and fighting hard for those championship points. Unlucky puncture The next round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship took place on 13/14th April at Silverstone in the UK. Some great driving from poor grid positions again showed 19 year old Tom Blomqvists capabilities but a puncture ruined what could have been the best drive of the weekend in Race 3 leaving his 13th to 7th drive in Race 2 his best result. Tom gave a typical philosophical comment, In the last race I had some guy hit my tyre and gave me a puncture and I had to pit. Even though we were running on old tyres and others had newer, I still set the 3rd fastest time so that wasnt bad. From 28th Id got up to 12th when we got the puncture so points would have been possible.

P ARISH C OUNCIL

DEBDEN PARISH COUNCIL MEETING, 3RD APRIL, 2013.

Public Forum Roger Burgess, Chairman of the Debden Branch of the Royal British Legion requested advance notice of the date of the 2014 Village Fete as the RBL has been urged to plan an event next year to mark the centenary of the start of WW1. If possible, they would like to join forces with the Fete Committee. Several residents asked for an update on the proposals for a new Village Hall. The residents were advised that the Trustees of the existing Village Hall decided some years ago to keep the group dealing with plans for a new hall completely separate. There have been several resignations recently from the new village hall group. The current members have spent some time looking at the proposals drawn up by Inkpen Downie and decided, for funding reasons, that this would not be a viable option. The group is now looking at alternatives and investigating all possibilities, but they have not had sufficient time to look at these thoroughly. It was suggested that interested residents should talk to members of the current group and an informal meeting was subsequently organised. It was stressed that it is important that all interested parties work together to ensure that we achieve the best possible option we can afford which meets the needs of the village and the users. A question was raised regarding the possibility of the Village Hall Committee becoming part of the Parish Council. It was pointed out that there are some very sound funding reasons why these should be kept completely separate. A resident of Debden Green, once again, raised the condition of Byway 37; vehicles are now driving on the field, rather than use the byway, and destroying the farmers corn. This has been referred to ECC many times and will be raised with Cty Cllr Simon Walsh at the Annual Assembly in May. Proposals for housing on an area of land at Debden Green A meeting has been held with the Planning Consultant who approached the PC some months ago. A plan showing six cottage style properties has been drawn up and was presented. A number of residents present expressed their concerns at the proposals and highlighted the fact that Debden Green is a hamlet and a scheme of this nature would be out of keeping. The owner of the land was also aware when he purchased the land that previous planning applications had been refused. The PC informed the residents that they would not consider endorsing these 34

proposals which are outside the village development limit as this would be setting a precedent Residents Fund. It was agreed that residents involved in organising events for the benefit of the Residents Fund should, in future, clearly state where the proceeds will be going on all publicity/tickets etc. Accounts should also be produced, together with a list of organisations who have received donations. This information should be published in the Parish Pump. CCTV equipment New CCTV equipment has been installed at the recreation ground. Please see separate note (p 5). The equipment was purchased with a donation of 930 from the Searle Trust. Plans to increase the parking at the Village Hall Plans were drawn up in 2010 which involved filling in the ditch up to the Yuva fence. Yuva, who own the ditch, have consulted their solicitor and a report was given on the current situation. A further report will be given when full details are available. The Pavilion Quotations to professionally clean and re-paint the interior and exterior will be discussed at the June meeting. Best Kept Village Competition It was agreed to enter the competition this year; see separate article (p 6) Review of Allotment Rents It was agreed that the rents and water charges should remain the same for 2013/14, but as charges have been the same for a considerable period there will be an increase when rents are reviewed in 2014. Planning applications The following applications have been received. No comments submitted UTT/13/0739/HHF - New Amberden Hall, Hamperden End Extensions, replacement windows, retile roof and new garden wall UTT/13/0311/HHF 4 Denesyde, Thaxted Road Demolition of existing rear conservatory and erection of single storey rear extension. The one that got away

The hunt is over and residents of Debden can breathe easily again. The crocodile photographed in the village pond and featured in the April Pump seems to have disappeared. Mind you, shortly before the rescue attempt on Easter Monday, April 1, a mother and an excited child were observed studying branches floating in the water for signs of movement; a man with a wheelbarrow glanced nervously in the pond and hurried past; and a jogger visibly increased her pace after pausing to read the notice about the hunt for a reptile reportedly able to run at 30 miles an hour. One witness at the rescue attempt said: Its gone, so I wouldnt shed any tears over it, not even crocodile ones. James celebrates with pork pie 'cake' A large crowd from Debden packed into the Fighting Cocks pub for James Rowleys 21st birthday party where the band Undercover entertained. James tastes were catered for when his cake turned out to be a large pork pie. James and Shannon Harvey would like to thank everyone for their gifts and collection, some of which is heading for a musical purchase. 40

Still rolling!
Debden took on Duxford United on March 30 at Duxford. With Debden unbeaten in 2013, they were looking to add another 3 points to their tally. It started well when Mark Dowsett gave Debden the lead but only for Duxford to hit back not long after with an equaliser. The teams went in at half-time at level FOOTBALL pegging before, after much pressure from the opposing team, Debden scored another goal. This put them 2-1 up with a great team goal finished off by none other but their talisman Zak Rayner who was only getting into his stride as later on he clinched two more goals to make it 4-1 to Debden; making it 21 personal goals in 12 games. At this stage Debden was sitting in 3rd place in the league. On Saturday, 6th April Debden took on Cambridge Ambassadors and continued their unbeaten run. They got off to the perfect start when their top scorer, Zak Rayner, put the ball in the net to give an early lead. Debden looked comfortable as they pressed more and more, seeing Rayner score another goal as well as strike-partner, Mark Dowsett, also getting himself on the score sheet. A late first-half goal from Chris Reid saw Debden go in 4-0 up at half-time. In the second half it wasn't long before Rayner got his hat-trick. Debden suffered a small set back when Cambridge found a goal from a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box but it didn't stop Debden from coming back again to punish them. Debden local, Chris Pearce, got himself a goal as well as three assists on the day before a Cambridge O.G. (Own Goal) and a late Rayner strike saw Debden win the game 8-1, keeping the pressure up on the top 2 in the league. On April 13th, Debden played Foxton and remain unbeaten this year with a 3-0 result. Zak Rayner scored two goals and Jordan Parrish one goal . ROUNDERS New players required Debden Ladies Rounders Team play every Tuesday from Easter through to mid September. Matches are at home or away. New players always welcome. Please contact: Rebecca: rebeccastanbrook@virginmedia.com FAREWELL: My family and I will be leaving Debden in mid May on assignment away from Carver Barracks. I am to undertake a Masters Degree and we will be moving to Swindon to attend the Royal Military College of Science. We thank all the residents of Debden for making us feel so welcome in what has been a very quick two years which has seen the birth of our daughter, Daisy, as well as my deployment to and recovery from Afghanistan. Zoe and I have really enjoyed being part of the village. Kind regards. Ben Hawkins and family.
