Materials

- Quiz 11 - Handout 1 (H1) Verb Chart - Handout 2 (H2) World Pass textbook [Travel & Vacation](Pgs. 118-120) - PowerPoint (Quiz 11; Quiz 11 Review; Verb List 12) - Blackboard - Projector Note: the numbered titles are all bold faced. All other bold-faced words are to be written on the blackboard. Words in quotations are to be spoken by the teacher. Materials are underlined. Include the time allotted for each activity.

Procedure

Introduction: T will greet Ss and asks about their weekend.

Verb Tense Conjugation (Time allotted: 15 Minutes) Objective: SWBAT develop an understanding of the conjugation of verbs by filling out a chart and filling in the blanks of example sentences.

5 New Verbs: Using PPT, T shows infinitive verb. Ss volunteer to provide simple past and past participle forms. T reveals answer & Ss copy correct answer (5x). Using PPT, Ss will volunteer to answer Verb Sentences by filling in the blank with the correct form of the verb. Ss will write 3 sentences of their own using the new verbs (1 Infinitive, 1 Simple past, 1 Past perfect).

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on understanding of old vocabulary by correctly completing the quiz and comprehension of new vocabulary by conjugating verbs in example sentences.

TRANSITION: Nice job with the new vocabulary! Ok! Today we are going to learn a new type of questions called embedded questions and its uses. Does anybody know what embedded means? Exactly, it means something that has been inserted into something else and became an integral part of it.

Language Focus (Embedded Questions): (Time allotted: 30 Minutes) Objective: SWBAT use embedded questions in conversations to discuss travel plans and ask about the city they live in (Athens, OH).

Pre-Activity: T will give Ss handout 2 (H2) and will ask them to read the two conversations. T will expect the Ss to notice and discuss the differences found in those two conversations. This will serve as an introduction to direct vs. embedded questions. T will explain embedded questions through PowerPoint. T will refer Ss back to the previous conversations and will ask them to underline the embedded questions. T will review answers with the class. While-Activity: T asks Ss to complete exercise C (Pg. 119) Ss will fill in the blanks by correctly rewriting the information in parentheses in the embedded form. T will ask Ss to share their answers aloud. T will review the answers with the class. Role-play activity: T will refer Ss to exercise D (pg. 119) in which the Ss will perform a role-play.

- Directions: - Ss will quickly fill out Student A chart but leave three blanks. - T will decide who is going to be the traveler (Student A) and who is going to be the travel agent (Student B). - Student B will ask Student A; Student A will respond to the questions.

Post-Activity: T will ask Ss to write three questions by which they are going to ask their peers about places in the city of Athens, Ohio. For example, do you know where I can buy furniture in Athens? Each student will choose the person whom he/she is going to ask their questions and the chosen student must respond to those questions. T will provide feedback as necessary.

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on their incorporation and usage of embedded questions in the speaking exercises.

TRANSITION: Good job class! I hope you have learned now how to make an embedded question. Just be careful of the word order when making such questions. Have you ever planned for something? How did you do it? Interesting Shortly, we are going to learn some of the common phrases used in discussing our plans for something and making decisions with other people.

Speaking: (Time allotted: 35 Minutes) Objective: SWBAT include the target phrases (planning & making decisions phrases) in their speech while they make plans for a wedding and a year of travel.

Pre-Activity: T will refer Ss to exercise A (Pg. 120) in which they will read three conversations aloud. T will point out the underlined phrases found in the dialogue to the Ss.

While-Activity:

T will ask Ss to complete exercise B (Pg. 120) by categorizing the given phrases into Explaining a plan and Taking things into consideration categories. The phrases are: (Here's the plan/idea; Considering that...; One option is... Another option is...; What we have in mind is...; Keep in mind that...; I'm considering). T will review answers with the class.

Post-Activity: Role-Play: T will refer Ss to exercise C (Pg. 120) in which they will brainstorm decisions that needs to be made in the following situations: 1- Planning for a wedding. 2- Planning for a year of travel

Ss will be asked to write their ideas for the two situations on blackboard. Then they will be asked to do a role-play based on the aforementioned situations; one student explains the plan and the other gives ideas to consider. Ss will perform the role-play using the phrases learned.

Evaluation: Ss will be evaluated on their accurate use of the target phrases in the speaking activity.

Assessment 1. Ss will be evaluated on quiz performance to check their comprehension of verbs in the infinitive, simple past, and past participle conjugation. 2. Ss will be evaluated on their understanding of embedded questions based on their performances in the written and the spoken exercises. 3. Ss will be evaluated on their understanding of planning and making decisions phrases based on their abilities to incorporate those phrases in a speaking activity. Anticipated 1. Some Ss may be reluctant to participate in the speaking activities which can be Problems addressed by encouraging and reassuring the student that his/her participation in such activities is beneficial for him/her in improving their spoken language.
