Principles of Learning

In order to meet the state, local and

professional standards,

P.S. 251 uses the Principles of Learning :

♦ Organize for Effort

♦ Clear Expectations

♦ Fair and Credible Evaluations

♦ Recognition of Accomplishment

♦ Academic Rigor

♦ Accountable Talk

♦ Socializing Intelligence

♦ Self-Management of Learning

♦ Learning as Apprenticeship
P.S. 251 is a Pre-K - Grade 5 school in District 22, Region 6, with a student enrollment of
approximately 650 students. It is a competitive neighborhood school set in the
Flatlands/Canarsie section of Brooklyn. Of its 32 classes, three are self-contained Special
Education. There is a small ELL population. All classes are heterogeneously grouped with a
gifted class on each grade and a full time inclusion class in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.

Literacy

P.S. 251 teaches balance literacy through the workshop model, Teachers College Reading and
Writing Workshop and is a Collaborative Community of Practice partner school.

Mathematics

Everyday Mathematics is the math program for grades K-5. Additional initiatives are offered
such as The Hundredth Day of school, number facts contests and mathematical related literacy
and interactive software. Manipulatives are a key feature in math lessons. The goal is to meet
and surpass the new city standards and to extend math proficiency on all New York State tests.

Science

SCIS and FOSS kits are used in each classroom and great attention is given to hands-on
scientific investigation.

Social Studies

Teachers use Social Studies texts during reading and writing workshop to ensure that State
Social Studies standards are covered. Fifth grade teachers prepare their students for the State
Social Studies exam using DBQ’s and content area texts.

To cultivate and develop future leaders to be critical thinkers, visionaries,

inventors and passionate humanitarians with a determined desire to make a

positive impact on society.

To achieve our vision, our mission is to create a safe and positive learning

environment that stimulates learning and creativity within all children, which

promotes academic excellence, artistic expression and creativity while

celebrating diversity.

Parent Involvement at P.S. 251

P.S. 251 seeks to extend the involvement of its

parents on every level. There is a very active PTA
which works collaboratively with school staff.
Parents are encouraged to become involved in both
the academic side of school as Learning Leaders, as
well as the social aspects in P.S. 251. Our parent
coordinator is available to assist our parents,
guardians and children.
