COMPARE & CONTRAST OF TEACHING STYLES

Introduction/Background Information Talking with Angie and Kier about their teaching careers reinforced the reason why we continuously need great teachers to be committed to the profession of teaching. It is the most thankless job that anyone can have and it is definitely the most underpaid job in America. Each of the teachers that were interviewed gave a different perspective as to the reason they were brought to teaching, but the many reasons that keep them fulfilled were closely related. This paper will share some background information on both teachers, each of their teaching styles, as well as, what each view are traits that all good teachers should possess. Angie Hood has been teaching for 14 years she has taught 1st, 2nd, and 4th grades. She is currently teaching 7th & 8th grade Technology at Shortridge Magnet High School. Angie became a teacher because she loves children and she likes being around them. She has had other jobs in the Technology field but did not find a sense of satisfaction. She had a passion for teaching that would not allow her to abandon the teaching profession. Angie said nothing makes her happier than teaching someone to learn. (Hood 2013) Kier Colon has been teaching for 6 years. She transitioned into teaching from the Graphic Design profession. She said she made the switch for two reasons, one was that she continued to be laid off while working in this field and two she liked teaching people. Her Graphic Design degree gave her the opportunity to teach a few classes at IUPUI and she fell in love with the idea of teaching children. She has taught k-12 Math Enrichment and she has taught Computer Technology to middle school children. She is currently teaching College Readiness for 10 - 12 grades at Decatur Central High School.

COMPARE & CONTRAST OF TEACHING STYLES Effective Teacher Trait: In speaking with Angie and Kier their ideas on what makes an effective teacher were along the same lines. They both said that an effective teacher is going to make sure that all students educational needs are met. Angie focused on the structure of discipline in the classroom. She stated you can not be an effective teacher if you do not have control of the classroom (Hood, 2013). Kier believes that discipline is important, however, she focuses on the child and making

them feel wanted, and she believes this attitude is what makes them achieve. She said that they would achieve because they do not want to disappoint you.(Colon, 2013) Kier and Angie both believe that being an effective teacher means showing up in the classroom with complete knowledge of the content being taught for the day. Angie pointed out that the high school students will notice if the teacher is trying to teach them a subject that they barely understand and they will challenge your ability to teach. Angies comment is evident throughout the teaching profession because the author of the text listed this as one of the attributes of a good teacher. A sound understanding of the field of teaching and learning your content area is essential. Students know when you are knowledgeable. (Koch 2012) Teacher Values, Beliefs and Philosophies: Kier firmly believes that a teacher must stay current on the changes in educational standards. She stated that In order for your children to believe in your ability to teach them, you have to show them you are always willing to learn (Kier, 2013). Angie and Kier both believe that one teaching style does not work for all students; you have to use Differentiated Instruction so that you can address the different learning needs of students. (Koch 2012) Angie believes that you have to learn the philosophy of the school

COMPARE & CONTRAST OF TEACHING STYLES system to avoid any misunderstandings. In order to have a success teaching career your philosophies and values have to line up with the system you are teaching in, in some aspect. Good Teacher-Most Important Quality

Each teacher agreed that the most important quality of a good teacher is to build a repoire with the students. Kier further added that it is also very important to make sure that the teacher meets the needs of his /her students. She said that the teacher has to have an ability to recognize when the students need assistance. Angie further explained that it is extremely important to have the parents involved in all aspects of the students development in the classroom. Student Trait, Quality and or Behavior Kier and Angie both believe that its important to learn the behavior of the students. They both agreed that the teacher must get the parents of the child involved so the teacher can understand the home environment. Angie said that most children will display the behavior of their parents, and that it is important to learn the parents behavior (Hood 2013) so the people will know how to deal with the child in the classroom. Kier firmly believes that the behavior of the student is a direct reflection of the parents(Hood 2013) believing that the home environment greatly affects the behavior of the child. Each of them told me that a good teacher can affect the behavior of the students in the classroom and that if the teacher has a positive attitude in the classroom, that attitude will rub off on the children. They said children are very perceptive to the mood of their teacher and that teacher has to be very careful to not let the negative attitude affect the childrens learning environment. Each teacher offered great information on traits that good teachers should possess in order to be an effective. Being prepared for class, maintaining control of the classroom, and

meeting the needs of the students are all traits I possess. Each of the above tools used effectively will allow good teachers to become great teachers; because they allow the teacher to put all the focus on helping each child obtain educational success.

Summary/Conclusion: While interviewing Angie and Kier I noticed that they had a lot of things in common regarding their teaching styles and philosophies. They both are very passionate about teaching and they each get excited when a student connects the dots and shows educational progress; and it reinforces for each of them that teaching is the right profession. They clearly have different teaching styles but have the same end goal to make sure that each student excels educationally. Angie is more of a disciplinarian than Kier; although Kier has rules for the students to follow she appears to be more flexible when a student breaks one of those rules. They both believe that it is the teachers responsibility to set the overall tone of the classroom. They both agree that more good teachers are needed to help teach the future leaders of this country.
