ENG2002M Engineering Dynamics Coursework Semester 2, ______________________________________________________________________________ The aim of the group coursework is to get the students familiar

r with mechanism dynamic calculations and to be able to use the simulation software ADAMS/AVIEW to model and simulate dynamic systems. Each member of the group should contribute to the ADAMS part of the project and be competent in using the software. You need to form a group of Five students and elect a group leader to divide tasks, monitor and chair regular group meetings to review the progress. Summary of minutes of these meetings should be included in the report as an appendix and should reflect individual group member presence, contribution and progress and they should be signed by each group member. A peer mark should be reported to the tutor by each member of the group for the individual contribution by filling the attached form for each member of your group. Project Statement You are expected to practice on Adams/Aview and produce dynamic model for an Excavator. You are required to design and analyse its motion characteristics and optimise its dynamics behaviour. You are also required to submit a detailed report on the Excavator dynamic design together with your ADAMS files on a CD (both as .cmd and .bin files). The design project is aimed at: a)
b) c) d)

testing your understanding of the calculation and analysis of machine dynamics using both hand calculation and CAE tools. testing your ability to use the Adams/Aview software environment and implement practical models. generating a set of results which describe the behaviour of the excavator discussing and interpreting the results in the context of practical machine design

The report should be written as a journal paper format, for example you can use some/all/more of the following headings: Title, Abstract, Introduction, Dynamic excavator calculation, Models set-up and data input for ADAMS software, Virtual tests implementation, Results and discussion, Conclusions, References. The report should be in the range of 20-25 pages. Typical examples of Excavators are given in Figure (1).

Figure 2 Typical Excavators

A typical schematic of an excavator is shown in Figure (2)

Figure 3 Typical Excavator Schematic

You are expected to collect information on Excavators, including types, dimensions and forces generated (JCB website has good resources). Describe the existing concepts and designs and relate this to your ADAMS model. You should state in your report the type of excavator you have modelled using the ADAMS/AVIEW software. Three different initial conditions should be considered to run the simulator: i) Force conditions: The hydraulic force inputs to the cylinders and the digging force to the tip of the bucket are applied and the time response of the system can then be obtained by measuring the displacement, velocity and acceleration of each joint and the extension displacement, extension velocity and extension acceleration of each cylinder. Displacement condition: A digging trajectory at the bucket tip can be prescribed as input. The model solves for the required displacement input for each cylinder to achieve that trajectory. It should also output other parameters such as joint angles, angular velocity and acceleration. Mixed condition: The extension displacement of each cylinder combined with a prescribed resistive force at the bucket tip can be prescribed as the input. With the time dependence of the extension displacement of each cylinder and the resistive force known, the hydraulic force inside each cylinder and joint force between two links should be evaluated.

Individual Report Each student is required to write an individual report using a standard journal paper format (more details can be found in the report structure) on analysis of the group models. You can select one condition as an example to analyse the performances of the system or provide some comments / suggestions to improve the system design. The length of the reports is about 1000-1500 words. Submission The follow materials will be submitted at the end of semester: ONE copy of individual reports. One electrical copy of models Contribution agreement Reports submitted after this time will not be accepted and all members of the design team will be awarded a zero mark for the this module. All team members must be clearly identified on the Title page.
