Water Column Imaging Processing in CARIS HIPS With CARIS HIPS and SIPS 7.

1 Service Pack 1, CARIS is introducing the first steps of functionality making use of Water Column Imaging (WCI) information provided by recent systems. At this point in time the following formats are supported: .s7k for Reson 7K Series Systems .all and .wcd files for Kongsberg EM Series Systems

This exercise concentrates specifically on how to display and make use of WCI data in CARIS HIPS.

Training Material The training dataset used in the session is courtesy of the Ocean Mapping Group of the University of New Brunswick

Course Organization The course organization will be a very quick workflow in order to highlight the new functionality. As such the data will only be converted, supplied with tide and merged in order to view it also in the Subset Editor as well as that a BASE Surface is going to be created in order to understand the data better.

Create a Vessel File The vessel file for this section will not contain relevant sections for sound velocity correction, as this is not required for the purpose of this exercise. Step 1: - Set the name of the vessel to WCI_Vessel - Set the date to March 31st, 2006 or 2006-090 - Click Next >. - Select Multibeam and click Next >. - Select the radio button for 1 transducer - Define 254 Beams for Transducer 1 - Select the Model as Simrad EM 3002 - Click Next >.

Step 2: Step 3:

Create a Vessel File The vessel file for this section will not contain relevant sections for sound velocity correction, as this is not required for the purpose of this exercise. Step 4: - Select all Motion Sensor data, but to no apply it in post processing - Click Next >. - Leave any Configuration options empty and click Finish.

Step 5:

Save the vessel file in the vessel editor and Exit the vessel editor.

Create a New Project Create a new project in the default location Step 1: - Add a project called of the vessel to WCI - Select that project and Add Vessel WCI_Vessel to it - Select that vessel and Add Day March 31st, 2006 to it - Click Next >.

Create a New Project Define all further options for the project, in this exercise this will be the default options. Step 2: - Add any desired description or change the owner (default is the windows username) - Click Next >. Step 3: - Leave the default Select UTM zone automatically - Click Next >. - Leave the default Project Extent to cover the whole world - Click Finish.

Step 4:

Convert the raw data Import the data into HIPS using the following settings: Step 1: Step 2: - Select Simrad as the format for import - Click Next >. - Leave the default settings as they are - Click Next >.

Note: Prior to Service Pack 1 for CARIS HIPS and SIPS 7.1 it was required for certain operations, such as processing backscatter with Geocoder or running SVC for Kongsberg multibeam systems to Carry over raw data file. Ultimately this would be needed for WCI data as well, since the data will remain and be read from the original raw data files. However, with Service Pack 1 the user now has a choice to not do this anymore and the respective processes will then read from the lines in the preprocess directory, as long as they can be found. Step 3: Step 4: - Select the line 0008_20060331_235448_ShipName.all for import - Click Next >. - Select the previously created project, vessel and day - Click Next >.

Convert the raw data Import the data into HIPS using the following settings: Step 5: - Leave the Navigation Coordinate Type to Geographic - Click Next >. - Do not set up any Navigation or Depth filters - Click Next >. - Leave all options as default. - Click Next >. - Click Convert.

Step 6:

Step 7:

Step 8:

Open Project Close an open projects and sessions and open the WCI projects.

Load Tide & Merge While the operations in the Swath Editor do not require loading of tide and merging of the data, the Subset Editor and creation of the BASE Surface do. Load Tide: - Select to load the file zerotide.tid Merge: - Do not select any of the options and click Merge.

Note: With Service Pack 1 for CARIS HIPS and SIPS 7.1 the Merge interface slightly changes, as well as the progress window and progress bar.

11

Create a New Field Sheet Create a new field sheet using the following settings: Step 1: - Set the name Fieldsheet and leave any other options as default - Click Next >. - Leave the default UTM zone as determined by the project - Click Next >. - Click the screen button to use the Current Window Extents - Click Finish.

Step 2:

Step 3:

12

Create a New BASE Surface Create a new BASE Surface using the following settings: Step 1: - Set the name BASE_Surface and leave any other options as default - Click Next >. - Set the resolution to 0.4m and the type as Swath Angle - Click Next >. - Leave all options as default - Click Finish.

Step 2:

Step 3:

13

Swath Editor Open the Swath Editor, note that a new toolbar will appear, which is called Water Column Data as well as a new tab in the control window called WCI. Water Column Data Toolbar The following buttons are available in the new toolbar: Displays the Water Column Across window Displays the Water Column Along Window Displays the current swath bathymetry in the across window and the center beam bathymetry in the along window Allow the user to toggle between heads when working with dual head data

The playback buttons will simply start a playback in the respective direction of the line, jump to start or end of the line or stop the playback.

14

Swath Editor WCI Control Window tab The WCI tab in the control window is allowing the user to change the colour map used in the Along and Across windows, as it does in other editor as well. Specific new functions for the Water Column Window are the slider bars for filtering intensities displayed as well as for stacking the profiles in the across track window. The Min/Max slider bar will simply hide and water column information with lower intensities than the value on the left or higher intensities as the value on the right. The Stacked View will result in all the profiles visible in the plan view window to be joined into one Across window, whereby the strongest reflections will prevail. Above two example with the colour map reversed, filters set and stacked view turned on or off.

15

Using Water Column Data in Swath Editor The aim of water column data in swath editor at the moment is to perform quality control on the bathymetry. For that purpose use the different functions to set up the display to the best way how to view the data. Note that there are a number of useful functions: The Across window has a slider bar just like the profile window to allow quick scrolling through the swaths The middle mouse button used in the Plan or Side View windows will also scroll through the swaths When moving forward by use of the Plan view slider bar, the Across and Along windows will be cashed when using stacked view

16

SubsetEditor Open the SubsetEditor over the bow of the vessel. Note that in the subset editor there is no new toolbar like in the swath editor, but a new option in the subset editor control window tab. Unlike the swath editor the data displayed in the subset editor will be that for all profiles currently visible in the subset editor window at the same time. Each water column sample will be displayed as a small point, thus creating a vast amount of samples. In order to be able to utilize this data for quality control purposes, it is therefore important to use the filters.

17

SubsetEditor Control window Options When selecting the Water Column option, the lower part of the control window will change to the following Water Column Properties: Load / Open / Unload: Use these functions to load the data into memory, open it once the load is finished and unload it from memory when not needed anymore Filters: Filter the data base on minimum depth and maximum depth. During load you can also filter based on the minimum slant range, data shoaler than this (depth at nadir) will be retained in order to avoid seeing any multiples from nadir affecting the water column data for such oblique beams, that have a sidelobe towards nadir. The intensity filters work the same as in the swath editor, note that you can filter during load as well as later during display. If filtered during load, data that was not loaded cannot be made visible unless the data is unloaded and loaded with different filters again. Display: The Fixed Size Points options overrides the default, which will show larger points for stronger returns and smaller points for weaker returns. Samples can be coloured by Intensity (default), Depth, Project, Vessel, Day or Line (same as the HIPS Data) or by Bottom Detection, referring to the fact whether this sample was classified as the return for the bottom or not. Survey Lines: Use this function to turn on and off individual lines for water column data display.

18

Using Water Column Data in Subset Editor Like in the Swath Editor the current aim of water column data in Subset Editor is to perform quality control on the bathymetry. For that purpose use the different functions to set up the display to the best way how to view the data. Note that there are a number of useful functions:
