Senior citizens can live prom
for second time. PAGE 3
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
One of the biggest miscon-
ceptions about forest fires is the
time of year they burn.
Fires burn and spread in the
spring and fall due to low hu-
midity, according to Section For-
est Fire Warden Tom Gerber.
The conditions in the months
of March, April and May are the
most favorable for forest fires,
according to Gerber.
High winds are most con-
ducive to forest fires in the
spring. The sun shines this time
of the year directly down on the
leaves and needle litter, Gerber
said. Everything hasnt leafed
out yet and that dries out.
According to Gerber, if the
area receives an inch of rain,
conditions could still be high
the next day due to the sun dry-
ing the area and high winds.
If we have multiple days of
decent drying, the spotty show-
ers can make it moderate, but it
could be high fire danger by the
afternoon, said Forest Fire Ob-
server Ben Brick, who watches
the forested areas of Marlton,
Medford, Shamong and Taber-
nacle. He is stationed at the
tower in Medford Lakes off
Stokes Road.
According to Gerber, the area
has been deemed a Wildland
Urban Interface, due to resi-
dents integrated in a densely
wooded area.
Were the eyes in the sky for
everyone on the ground, Brick
said.
The Medford Lakes tower was
constructed in 1948 after World
War II and stands 141 feet tall,
according to Gerber.
Gerber oversees Division B
with towers at Apple Pie Hill in
Tabernacle.
Also, there are three stations
in Batsto, the Cedar Bridge Sta-
tion, Jamesburg, Lakewood,
Lebanon and Medford.

Proudly serving the area since 1994
Seniors can experience
prom again on May 17
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
Senior citizens of Medford and
Medford Lakes will be able to ex-
perience prom again on May 17 at
Shawnee High School.
The Neighborhood Services
Advisory Committee and
Shawnees student council com-
bined to organize the event.
According to Medford Town-
ship staffer Beth Portocalis, when
the township consolidated the
committees, it wanted to continue
to provide services and programs
for seniors.
This is what we envisioned
when the council created the
board, Portocalis said. Without
the rec council to be able to create
these services, the committee can
prioritize these services and sup-
port organizations providing
services and events and things we
used to do here.
According to Portocalis, the
council wanted to keep another
way for the services and pro-
grams for seniors going. Its the
No. 1 priority for the committee
to offer the event and to serve
more senior citizens.
The prom will be an affordable
social event, with tickets at $5
apiece, covering fruit and veggie
trays, hot and cold beverages and
desserts.
Were inviting them to join in
a night of dancing, said Heidi
Krihak, substance awareness co-
ordinator at Shawnee and mem-
ber of the Neighborhood Services
Committee.
The Shawnee Jazz Band and
Shawnee Singers will be perform-
ing a night of 40s and 50s music
and will be dressed for the occa-
sion, according to Krihak.
Additionally, student council
members will be dressed to im-
press. The students will be join-
ing guests on the dance floor, Kri-
hak said.
Student council has taken con-
trol of the project.
The advisory board will help
[the students] any way they can,
Portocalis said. The students
have really taken the ball and run

tional charity will be hosting its
annual Used Bike Collection and
Bike Rodeo at Johnsons Farm in
Medford from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on
Saturday, May 4.
The Rotary Club, in partner-
ship with the Pedals for Progress
International charity
www.p4p.org, will be collecting

A $10 donation is asked to
cover the shipping.
The donation of the bike and
the $10 is tax deductible.
A receipt will be made for tax
purposes.
If anyone cannot get their bike
or sewing machine to the event,
contact Rotarian Mike Recinto at
(856) 577-7113 or
mikerecinto@gmail.com and
arrangements will be made to
pick up the bikes or sewing ma-
chines the week of the collection.
Police cyclists and volunteers
from Wheelies will be on hand to
demonstrate basic handling skills
and address the importance of
following the rules of the road.

M
oney is always an issue.
Families are constantly
pinching pennies, looking
for ways to reduce expenses. School
districts and municipal governments
are doing the same, hoping to help
lower, or at least stabilize, the amount
of tax money they require to live in
town.
The challenge has always been, and
will continue to be, how these entities
can control costs while still providing
high-quality services that their resi-
dents demand. The state of New Jersey
certainly isnt helping much through
aid, and its unlikely that will change
any time soon.
So the onus is on the local municipal
governments and school districts to get
creative: Not only what can be cut from
expenses, but what can be added to rev-
enues.
For awhile now, the idea of private
sponsorship of public facilities has
been tossed around. Selling banners to
local businesses at Little League fields,
or having that business sponsor a
youth sports team has been the norm
for quite some time. And no one seems
to have a problem with that.
But throw in the possibility of sell-
ing naming rights at a field or, worse
even, a building or complex, and excep-
tions start to arise. When is enough
enough? the detractors ask. Does
everything need to be sold?
We agree that there is a fine line be-
tween tasteful, effective sponsorship
and over-the-line, banner-on-every-
inch-of-the-field advertising. Think
Major League 2 here (for all you
sports movie fans).
Moorestown Township recently ap-
proved an ordinance on first reading
that, if passed, would establish an offi-
cial sponsorship program. Officials
say that the program would increase
township revenues and help with im-
provements and maintenance of recre-
ational fields.
Annual banner and sponsorship op-
portunities will be available, with nam-
ing rights being offered as five- or 10-
year deals, with minimum bids of
$5,000 and $35,000, respectively. To en-
sure proper material, businesses wont
be allowed to advertise the sale of alco-
hol, tobacco, adult-oriented material or
other items not consistent with pro-
moting the youth sports program and
the positive image of the township.
We applaud Moorestown Township
for its work in this regard, and we urge
other townships to follow suit.
If done correctly, sponsorships and
naming rights can provide a huge in-
flux of cash to youth sports leagues, to
school districts and to municipal gov-
ernments.
This field brought to you by...
Its time for governments, schools to utilize sponsorships at fields, buildings

idea? Or do you think that enough is
enough? Let us know your thoughts

Reader upset about the
increase in school taxes
In response to the article which ap-
peared in the April 17-23 Medford Sun re-
garding School taxes are high. Should
we really be that upset?
The answer is yes, we should be upset,
and I am tired of the rhetoric that is being
thrown around about how great our school
system is.
In fact, the very day I read this article,
there was an article that appeared on USA
News regarding the ranking of New Jer-
sey schools. We arent even in the top 10!
In fact, we arent even listed with any
ranking as a result of the legitimate
process of how the schools are ranked.
To be eligible for state ranking, a school
must be awarded a national gold or silver
medal.
Hence, because our schools have not
been awarded any medals, I dont see how
someone can claim this notoriety to fame
when its all smoke and mirrors.
But again, I guess if you can insult the
intelligence of your readers, who are fed
up with hearing how we have a reason to
raise our taxes yet again.
Feel free to pay my portion because we
are not getting what we are paying for.
If you are to Google top high schools in
New Jersey, the most recent data is from
2012 and it reveals Seneca was number 119,
Shawnee was No. 142 and Lenape was No.
143.
The methodology that explained these
rankings was obtained from the state De-
partment of Educations most recent N.J.
School report card.
So before you put your hands in my
pockets again, please state the facts your
article was pure fiction.

POLICE REPORT
The follow reports are on file
with the Medford Township Po-
lice Department:
On April 18 at 11:08 a.m., Med-
ford police responded to the Fly-
ing W Airport located on Foster-
town Road for a report of an air-
plane crash.
The caller reported that the
plane crashed while attempting
to take off from the runway.
Upon arrival, police investiga-
tion revealed that the pilot was
operating a Piper Arrow single
prop airplane and attempting to
take off from the runway.
The airplane suffered a me-
chanical failure and the pilot was
unable to take off. He attempted to
stop the airplane prior to the end
of the runway, but was unable to
stop in time. The airplane contin-
ued past the runway and crashed
in to a ravine. The pilot was not
injured. The Medford Township
Fire Department responded to the
scene and secured the area.
The investigation was subse-
quently turned over to the FAA,
which arrived on location.
Due to the location of the
crash, the airport was shut down
for several hours until the air-
plane could be removed.
On April 19 at 9:04 p.m. the
Medford Township Police were
conducting a property check of
Bob Meyer Park.
Officers located a suspect
smoking marijuana inside of the
park.
He was arrested and found to
possess a pipe used to smoke mar-
ijuana and marijuana under 50
grams.
The suspect was arrested and
issued summons and was re-
leased pending court.
On April 23 at 9:10 p.m. Med-
ford Township Police responded
to a single family dwelling on the
200 block of Stokes Road for a re-
ported burglary.
The investigation revealed that
between 7:30 a.m. and 9:10 p.m.,
an unknown suspect kicked a
rear door gaining entry into the
home. The owner, who was not
home during the time frame, re-
ports a variety of jewelry and
coins were stolen from the home.
Anyone who may have seen
anything unusual or suspicious is
asked to contact the Medford
Township Police Detectives at
(609) 654-7375 or the anonymous
citizen tip hotline at (609) 714-

The students are really excit-

Krihak said.
According to Krihak, more
than 300 can attend the event. She
is hoping for a good turnout.
We hope to keep this going on
for years to come, Krihak said.
We hope it will open up more op-

A lot of people arent home in
these wooded communities, and
Ben is standing up here looking
for smoke, Gerber said.
According to Brick, the towers
stay in constant contact, especial-
ly when a forest fire is burning.
When Brick identifies smoke,
he looks into the sight glass to
pinpoint its approximate location
on a round map of the area with
a string, providing him with a co-
ordinate.
Hopefully, another tower can
see the smoke, and theyll get
their degree, and well line it up
to pinpoint where it is, Brick
said.
After receiving the sight loca-
tions by radio from two of the
nearest towers, Brick uses az-
imuth circles, a navigational tool
with strings located in the center
of the circle along a map, to trian-
gulate where the fire is located.
According to Gerber, the sys-
tem is accurate up to a few yards.
There are newer systems that
probably wouldnt work as well.
Theyre usually infrared or digi-
tal cameras that probably would-
nt be as good as if the person
was doing it for you, Gerber
said.
Its an old tried and true sys-
tem.
Once the fire is called in, three
trucks that can hold up to 500 gal-
lons of water each, equipment
for the firefighters and a bulldoz-
er are dispatched to the scene.
According to Gerber, the state
protects 3.1 million acres, 122,880
of which make up Wharton State
Forest.
As of April 8, the state Forest
Fire Service has responded to 230
wildfires that burned 293 acres,
compared with 461 fires that
burned 1,994 acres during the
same period last year, according
to a release.
The weekend of April 5, 42
wildfires were reported across
New Jersey, burning 182 acres.
The largest section that burned
was in an extremely remote 150
acres of Wharton State Forest in
Burlington County.
According to the release, the
state is still investigating the
cause of the fire.
Forest fire observers deter-
mine the level of forest fire risk
each day with the potential to
change as the day progresses.
Brick checks the weather two
times a day, taking into consider-
ation the level of humidity and
wind.
The information determines if
the day is low, moderate, high,
very high or extreme wildfire
danger levels.
According to Gerber, fires can
start for a number of reasons, in-
cluding hot carbon from a brake
shoe, burning leaves in the back-
yard, people intentionally setting
fires, cigarettes and kids playing
with matches.
Weve weeded people setting
fires intentionally out over the
years, but we still have them,
Gerber said.
Backyard fires can cause forest
fires and are a big deal now.
They werent as in style 15
years ago, Gerber said.
Residents setting backyard
fires in pits or chimneys are re-
quired to have a permit from the
DEP, according to Gerber.
They dont realize that, just
because its not on the ground,
its still dangerous, Gerber said.

MBA grant results discussed at meeting
Have you ever wondered what
happens to the money that organ-
izations get during fundraising
campaigns?
Did you wonder how the funds
helped or what they were able to
do with it?
At its April networking meet-
ing, the Medford Business Asso-
ciation members were able to get
their answers.
During the 2012 year, the MBA
awarded two $5,000 grants whose
recipients attended the meeting
and shared details of how the
funds were spent.
Faith Sutton, of the Haines
sixth grade center, received $5,000
to purchase Kindles for her class.
She filled the Kindles with a
multitude of applications de-
signed to enhance their educa-
tion.
The children now have access
to videos galore.
They can walk through muse-
ums, tour cities and page through
reference guides all without leav-
ing their desks.
Jeanne Gural also shared with
the group how $5,000 has made a
tremendous impact for the Wood-
ford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge.
The grant enabled trained edu-
cators to work within the local
schools to complement their cur-
rent class work and bring the out-
doors to the students.
They learned not only about
the animals, but also of the im-
portance of maintaining the nat-
ural resources in which the ani-
mals reside.
The non-profit organization
utilized the funds in a manner
that maximized the return to its
full potential while rewarding
Medford students with knowl-
edge and fun.

Two photographers start
Pinelands Photography School
Two award-winning, fine art
photographers have combined
their talents to start the
Pinelands Photography School.
The mission of the school will
be to teach best practices to con-
sistently create exceptional im-
ages with DSLR cameras.
Recognizing a void of experi-
enced photographers teaching lo-
cally and at an affordable price,
Albert Horner of Medford Lakes
and Denise Bush of Tabernacle
are collaborating to begin a series
of seminars and workshops for
photographers of all skill levels.
The theme of their first work-
shop is Creating Exceptional
Landscape Photographs.
There are a lot of photogra-
phers of various skills out there
who are just aching to find out
how great photographs are creat-
ed. They dont know who to talk
with and dont want to spend a lot
of time and funds to get the infor-
mation they are looking for, said
Horner.
Horner has been a specialized
fine art image photographer since
the 1970s with displays of his pho-
tographs of the Pinelands, pro-
duced over the last eight years, at
the Noyes Museum, Lines on the
Pines, Medford Leas community
art center, MThomas Galleries in
Haddonfield, and many self pro-
duced exhibits. He also holds
gallery showings at his Medford
Lakes home. Visit www.pineland-
simagery.com
Bush earned a B.F.A. from
Moore College of Art & Design
and has worked as a graphic de-
signer for more than 30 years. She
has participated in many fine art
photography exhibits and has
won several awards over the
years. She also serves as a photog-
raphy judge and offers one-on-one
digital photography training.
Our program is very thor-
ough, filling in gaps that even ex-
perienced photographers may
have missed by skipping around
and learning from various places
or working on their own, Bush
said.
The program will include
everything from exposure and
camera settings to composition
and advanced techniques.
The landscape seminars offer
an opportunity for an additional
next-day, hands-on workshop.
Plans are also being made to
offer a digital processing work-
shop in early 2014 using Adobe
Photoshop software.

Stockton, BCC sign Guaranteed
Admission Program agreement
Burlington County College and
The Richard Stockton College of
New Jersey recently signed a
Guaranteed Admission Program
agreement for their latest green
degrees.
Last fall, both colleges
launched degree programs in the
growing field of sustainability.
The agreement, signed at
Stocktons Board of Trustees
meeting in February, will allow
BCC students studying sustain-
ability to seamlessly transfer into
Stocktons program after earning
their associates degree.
Students who meet the neces-
sary requirements for the degree
program will enter into Stockton
College with junior status and be
able to graduate with a bachelors
degree within two years.
This agreement affords BCC
students studying sustainability
the very important opportunity
to continue to pursue a bachelor's
degree in this field, BCC Presi-
dent David C. Hespe said. We are
proud to partner with institu-
tions like The Richard Stockton
College. They have also been lead-
ers in this area and environmen-
tal innovators.
BCC is the first two-year col-
lege in the tri-county area to offer
comprehensive green associates
degree programs. With support
from a NASA grant, BCC created
the Center for Sustainability and
Alternative Energy and is now of-
fering four green degree pro-
grams: Associate of Science in
Sustainability Policy & Manage-
ment, Associate of Applied Sci-
ence in Energy Management, As-
sociate of Applied Science in Al-
ternative Energy Technologies,
and Associate of Science in Sus-
tainable Energy Studies. The As-
sociate of Science degrees are
specifically designed to transfer
into four-year institutions.
In the fall of 2012, the first
Stockton students enrolled in our
sustainability program, which is
Stocktons newest undergraduate
degree program, and just one
year later, we are proud to be
clearing the pathway to bring
Burlington County College stu-
dents in, Stockton President
Herman J. Saatkamp said.
To qualify for acceptance, BCC
students must earn a cumulative
grade point average of 3.0 and de-
clare their intention to enroll in
the GAP program before complet-
ing 30 credits at BCC.
For more information on
BCCs Center for Sustainability
and Alternative Energy, please
