Insulation problems of high voltage cables

Most of the troubles occurring on HV cable systems are originated from insulation problems. Origin of insulation problems: New cables: defect in jointing of accessories

Cables in operation: insulation decay Cables in operation: failure of accessories

Criteria of insulation decay

The insulation-degradations can be classified based on their range as Local decay General decay, valid for the entire insulation based on their kind as Spark-gap typed decay (partial discharges = PDs) Leakage conductance typed decay (dielectric dissipation factor) For detection and localization of the above decays the present most developed equipment is the OWTS.
