2. We will review the vocabulary words: charter, invest, stock, cash crop, indenture servants. Students will write down the definitions to the words. 3. We will begin reading the book pages 130-133. I will stop during the reading to ask students questions and have them reply: (After the second paragraph on page 130) Why is Roanoke considered the lost colony? (After the fifth paragraph on page 131) Why did almost half of the settlers die? (After the first paragraph on page 132 ) What crop did England want that they could not grow in England? (At the end of the last paragraph on page 133) Why did the Powhatans and English make up? Was it a success? 4. Once we are done reading to book individually students will do the lesson review (questions 3 and 5). Students will turn the assignment in at the end of the lesson. Why did Englands rulers and merchants want to start a colony in North America? What might have been the opportunity cost of someone that came to Jamestown as an indentured servant?

5. Students will be put into groups of three and they will have to create their own colony on the computer at: http://www.historyglobe.com/jamestown/jamestown.swf. At the end of the activity it will show how well students were able to survive in Jamestown. 6. CLOSURE: Students will turn in a ticket out the door stating one thing that they learned about Jamestown settlement. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Students will be assessed by their lesson review, activity, and ticket out the door. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know students understand the concepts if they can state why Jamestown was a successful colony, why Roanoke was not successful, and if they can successfully create their own colony based on what they learned in the readings. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think that the whole lesson is fairly easy to understand. 2.
