Title of Unit: Learning My Way Around the World Title of Lesson: Where I live Submitted By: Robyn Bolton

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for a 1st grade student to learn the city and state they live in and where it is located on the map. This lesson will use a YouTube video of the book Me on the Map. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st grade Skill Level: All learning levels Grouping: Whole group discussion, small group activity, individual assessment. C. Materials: Pencil Paper Glue Sticks Projector Poster board Print outs of Nevada, The U.S, and Clark County Color pencils, crayons, markers

D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards G5.1.5 Visually display geographic information using simple lists, graphs, and maps. Student-Friendly Standards E. Procedure: 1. Introduction: I will start off the lesson by reviewing with students what they have learned the previous day about North America. I will then ask students what country do they live in. I will tell students that they live in the United States which is located in North America. In the United States we live in what state? I will tell students that they will be learning about the state that they live in, which is Nevada. I will show students where Nevada is located on the class map and on the globe. I will tell students that in Nevada we live in Clark County. In Clark County there are different parts of town and I will name the town that the students live in. I can show where things are using list, graphs, and a map.

After the students have watched the video we will discuss the book and relate it to what we have talked about at the beginning of our discussion. 3. In groups students will create themselves on the map with their poster board. I will give each group a cut out of the map of the U.S, Nevada, Clark County, as well as cut outs of boys and girls (to represent themselves) , and student will collectively come up with how they want to draw their town. Students will have to label each small map on their poster board and color in the maps as well as the cut out to represent them. Once students are done they will present their poster to the class. 4. CLOSURE: Students will fill in the third page of their My Map Skills Book and answer the questions: I live in the state of I live in the county of I live in the city of I live in the country of

F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will use the third page of their My Map Skills Book to measure student understanding. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know that students understand the concepts from the lesson if they can answer the 4 questions correctly in their My Map Skills Book: I live in the state of I live in the county of I live in the city of I live in the country of

G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think that the whole lesson will be easy to teach. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I dont think that there will be any challenging part to teach. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? For homework I will have students tell the difference between a country, state, and town. I will have parents help students. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?

For students that do not grasp the concepts I will have them grouped up so if they do not understand they can ask group members to further explain. I will also walk around during activity to answer any questions. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I dont think any part of this lesson needs to change. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? There were no difficult parts in writing this lesson.
