A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson plan discusses why people work. Students learn the financial reasons why people need to work. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 2nd. Skill Level: on level Grouping: Whole group for procedure steps 1-6,8. Small group for step 7. Independent practice for step 9. C. Materials: Elmo Blank Sheet of Paper Pen Worksheet Dictionaries Various books from library on income and jobs D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o E9. 2.4 Discuss why people work.

Student-Friendly Standards I can list reasons why people need to work.

E. Procedure: 1. Teacher will ask students, Why do you go to school? 2. Short class discussion. 3. Teacher explains that students go to school to gain knowledge. This knowledge will help them as adults when they get a job. 4. Teacher will ask students, Why do adults go to work? Do they go for fun? 5. Teacher uses the Elmo and a sheet of paper and asks students for reasons they think adults work. Teacher will write down student responses. 6. Teacher elaborates on student responses stating that earning an income is why most people work. 7. Students will work in small groups researching information on the worksheet. Students will use dictionaries and the books in the classroom to answer the questions. 8. Groups will share with the class and teacher will continue writing using the Elmo.

9. Students will complete the last question of the worksheet independently. 10. CLOSURE: Ask students to think about and share their thoughts on the question, Where do you think the goods come from that you researched today? F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? The worksheet will be used to measure student understanding. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. The completed worksheet, specifically the last question, will show me how well students understand why people work. Students need to take the material learned in the lesson and be able to apply it independently to explain why people work since the rest of the worksheet was completed as a group.
