JPEG Hacking This is quite a common form of hacking. By hacking the raw jpeg code, it disfigures the picture itself into an unrecognisable lines of colours which in another sense, generated another imge. It is unpredictable process

Fan Drawing Machine Similar to Drill Dawing Machine, here designer used the spin of fan to draw. He placed 5 crayons on an adapter which spins round when fan is turned on. The outcome forms a different pattern to the drill machine but it is seems to form a very steady pattern.

GPS Drawing Global Positioning System (GPS) is designed to inform users their current location and it also nevigates them to their destination. GPS had been hacked by communities of people into a drawing tool. Satellite updates you constantly of your route. The characteristic of GPS allows to make GPS devices viable drawing tools much like a pencil on paper or a stick in sand. GPS drawing also helps people to do exercises as well as to explore the city. It often lead people into an area that they have never discovered so it adds up an enjoyment. Drill Drawing Machine Here, Drill is hacked in a form of drawing machine. It is made out of a 1.25 inch diameter wooden dowel with 15 crayons attached. An electric drill is used to spin the crayons rapidly. The drill can then be used as a alternate drawing device. It is a new method of drawing. The example above, placed metal typography underneath the paper and coloured in the message using the machine to go over it. It coloured in DRAWING MACHINE MADNESS. It forms quite an interesting mixture of colours and it even forms a pattern.

Camera Tossing Camera tossing uses the shutter speed of camera and deforms the image into a lines of colours. It works best at night with some street lights.

HACKING: EVERYDAY ITEMS

Stair + bookcase Stairs had been hacked into a bookcase. It would be a suitable interior design for certain places such as library or a bookstore. These combination of stair and boockcase makes itself a very compact and efficient design. Bag + Picnic Blanket This Yield Picnic Bag Blanket is just a bag when it is zipped. Once you start to un-zip and open up the bag, it turns into a picnic blanket. It is only suitable for one. Delete Clock This is a white board clock. The clock works just as others, but the difference is that you can write your scheduale on clock. As the time go pass, the niddle on the clock removes the old scheduales.

Pencil Dice Using the six angled sides of pencil, it had been hacked into a dice. I used to make one for myself when I was in primary school. It is used for entertaining purpose.

Bike Storage Here, unused triangular space within bike had been developed into a storage area to keep drinks and other small necessities. The cover can also be used as a coffee table.

Hacking of clock and white board could be used at different spaces from school kids to people who works at offices.

For this project, I wanted to approach the idea very simple and straight forward. I decided to hack hair dryer that I use every morning to dry my hair. I looked at how hair dryer has been constructed. It is formed with a motor, an electric fan, resistor (heating element). I began with an imagination : using the wind from hair dryer to throw the paint at canvas. It as a painting tool that we do not have control over the outcome. More I think about it, it was unlikely to be applied in real as paint will damage device. Another problem that came to my mind is the audience. Who might value this drawing tool? . It was hard to argue that my hacking of hair dryer into a painting tool, would actually be valuable to people and artists. Because we do not have any control over the outcome, it may just be a machine that throw paint. Dysons hair dryer This hairdryer had been invented by Dyson. it intakes the air from the bottom and passes through the motor. Then air is being pushed forward. Using Dysons hairdryer, I could use powdered paints with wet canvas.

Control or Uncontrol? In the beginning, I thought that it would be hard to control the paint with hair dryer. I decided to experiment if this is true or not. I will be using different colours of ink to write and draw. I will be exploring the relationship between inks and the hair dryer including the distance, power, angle ... ect.

Value of hacking

Hacking the hair dryer into a mechanism to draw and paint was a valuable experience for me. It has its originality and it gave me an oppatunity to explore a distinct method of painting. Using hair dryer to paint break the rule of traditional way of using brush. It was much more entertaining process and it was even very quick to do one. Beginning of the project, I thought it would be hard to control the paint using hairdryer as then I would have to control the wind and its direction. However, more I get to experience it, I was convinced that it is possible to lead the direction of painting. Uncontrol to control. Of controlling paint and the hairdryer, I had to learn the relationship between the flow of ink and the hairdryer. The direction of ink all mattered depending on the distance between hairdryer and the ink, the power of hair dryer and angle it is facing. If there were too many ink, then it was likely for ink to be splited into lines so it was important to put the power the lowest and slowly pushes the ink.Then it would move as a bulk. The temperature of hairdryer is also important because it dry up the ink quickly if it is too hot.
