What is a Session Border Controller (SBC)

At the edge of a network
A signaling and media proxy Acting as a firewall Providing NAT traversal services for IPCentrex type services Providing application level bridges across private IP networks and VLANs May also provide other services (media conversion, media analysis)

In the core network

A signaling and optionally media proxy Acting as firewall Providing application level bridges across private IP networks and VLANs

SBCs are quickly becoming very important for NGN networks,

mainly because of IP trunking

Why IP Trunking (also called Business Trunking)

PBX interconnect through TDM Cost, Echo and tandeming issues ! VoIP GW TDM TDM VoIP GW PBX interconnect through IP solved by an SBC !

SBCs for IPCentrex are not so easy

SBCs have to relay all media streams to/from the public network, but intra-site calls must remain internal

What is an intra-site call ? -Not just direct calls (phone a1 of site A to phone a2 of site A) -Phone a1 to phone b CFU to phone c transferred after consultation to phone a2 ! -Calls from phone a1 to a local number, routed through the sites local GW (multiple protocols involved)

IMS has formalized use of SBCs at the edge: the P-CSCF

A Home NW S-CSCF AS 1 AS 2 AS 3 S-CSCF of A Home Network goes through AS sequence, and routes to I-CSCF of B Home network I-CSCF of Home Network selects S-CSCF B Visited NW B Home NW S-CSCF AS 1 AS 2 AS 3 S-CSCF of B Home Network goes through AS sequence, and routes to P-CSCF of B visited network

P-CSCF of Visitor Network routes signaling to I-CSCF of A Home Network

P-CSCF controls packet filters

What IMS adds to normal SBC

Normal SBCs next hop is THE application softswitch of the
same service provider

A P-CSCF is designed to dynamically resolve the home

domain of the calling user, and uses the I-CSCF of this domain as next hop: it is a shared resource
User A (local provider)

Service platform of service provider A

User B (roaming) NeoXBC as P-CSCF Service platform of service provider B

In fixed networks :
P-CSCF= SIP SBC SBCs of fixed networks are likely to require MGCP and H.323 support as well (e.g. MGCP phone to H.323 PBX on same site RTP stream optimization)

In mobile networks :
P-CSCF = SIP SBC+home domain resolution

Dont forget provisionning !

Business trunking will be a mass service, like BRI/PRI today
Already >20,000 sites installed by Comunitel/Tele2 (Spain), >1000 per month installed Eircom lauch Nov 16 2005 Not just pure IP trunking, but also connectivity to existing BRI/PRI PBXs (data/voice service bundles for corporations)

Manual provisionning of router (QoS, VLAN)+ Manual

provisionning of SBC + Manual provisionning of softswitch/application server = human errors and excessive deployment costs

The provisionning system will be key, and needs to adress

the complete chain : from the VoIP CPEs to SBCs and application servers.

Session Border Controller Benefits

Faster time to market

Better interoperability with protocol adaptation at the edge (rather than

at the softswitch level) End-to-end solution, one-stop shopping Fully integrated in Business Services provisioning (i.e: call limiter for enterprise)

Interoperability Secures the corporate VPN connexion to the carriers network

Interoperable with a wide range of IP-PBXs and gateways Isolates the Service Provider core network from the end-users LAN Proxy customer VLANs Handles overlapping IP addresses on customers LAN Supports and aggregates multiple VLANs Applies security policy (hide topology, DoS attacks, ) Provides VoIP NAT/PAT (802.1q) Drops packets according to policy Manages Call Admission Control (CAC) Manages Service Level Agreement (SLA) QoS marking/mapping ToS, DiffServ, MPLS Dynamic bandwidth Control, Alarm event in case of bandwidth limit
detection, RTP optimization

Improved control and quality
