In this assessment you will have opportunities to provide evidence against the following criteria. Indicate the page numbers where the evidence can be found Criteria refer ence To achieve the criteria the evidence must show that the student is able to: Calculate vehicle performance using Newtons laws and the equations of motion. Carry out engine testing to obtain data and report on engine performance. Explain, with examples, the importance of the accuracy of data that is used to solve a range of problems related to engine and vehicle performance. Compare and analyze actual data and calculated data for engine or vehicle performance. Tick if met Page numbers

BTEC National Diploma in Vehicle Technology ( Year-1 ) Unit 5: Applications of Vehicle Science and Mathematics.

Assignment 3 Be able to apply scientific principles related to engine

performance to solve vehicle-related tasks.

Task 1

(Pass P9)

To improve the safety of motorists, modern cars are built so the front end crumples upon impact. A 1200 kg car is travelling at a constant velocity of 8 m/s [East] (see Figure above). It hits an immovable wall and comes to a complete stop in 0.25 s. (a) Calculate the impulse provided to the car. (b) What is the average net force exerted on the car?

(c) For the same impulse, what would be the average net force exerted on the car if it had a rigid bumper and frame that stopped the car in 0.040 s?

Task 2

(Pass P10)

Use the attached observation sheet (No-1) to carry out the cylinder compression test for petrol engine. Report Write a report on engine performance, it should include: 1) Did you find differences in pressure values for the same cylinder? 2) How did you calculate the mean pressure of the cylinder? 3) Was the pressure for the four cylinders constant? 4) What are the possible reasons for cylinders pressure difference (if any)? 5) Was the engine smoothly running?

Task 3

(Merit M3)

A four-stroke, six-cylinder engine has a cylinder bore of 11.67 cm and a stroke of 12.00 cm. If the engine is running at 2,200 rev/min, and the indicated mean effective pressure (pimep ) is 1,200 kPa, what is the: 1. Total swept volume of the engine (engine displacement)? 2. Indicated Power?

Task 4

(Distinct D1)

Continuing from the previous example of task (3),for the same operating conditions, the brake torque at the flywheel is measured to be 625 N . m. 1. What is the brake engine power in (kW)?

2. Compare your result for the value of the brake engine power obtained in part (1) of Task 4 brake engine power of 150 kW. with the manufacturers listed value of

3. Analyze your result for the value of the brake engine power obtained in part (1) of Task 4 brake engine power of 150 kW. with the manufacturers listed value
