Gangs and the violence

inhabit have become a
world-wide problem, with
gangs in Europe and Latin
America rivalling any of
the well-known West Coast
gangs in influence, reach
and violence.
At a Fort Lauderdale
lunch meeting sponsored by
Black Republican Clarence
McKee, Florida Attorney
General Bill McCollum
and a panel including his
top anti-gang strategist and
South Florida’s top cops
gave a sobering report on the
impact of gangs on Florida’s
quality of life, and detailed
their strategies for combat-
ing gang activity.
Attendees at the lun-
cheon March 23 included
Black media owners, judg-
es, school board members,
prosecutors, business lead-
ers, elected officials and
community organizers.
Police are trying to
change the perception of
“street gangs,” which they
say have become highly
sophisticated criminal or-
ganizations. And it’s local
gangs, not just national,
well-known gangs such as
the California-based Crips,
Bloods, and Latin Kings that
are the problem.
McCollum and mem-
bers of his office’s Gang
Reduction Strategy Execu-
tive Committee developed
a statewide gang reduction
strategy to address the sig-
nificant threat of criminal
gangs and gang violence
in Florida. The ultimate
goals are to stop the growth
of gangs in Florida; reduce
the number of gangs and
gang members; and render
the remaining gangs inef-
fectual.
How will these goals
be accomplished? Accord-
ing to the Fort Lauderdale
panel, through preventing
youth from joining gangs
and intervening when they
become gang members;
through traditional law
enforcement investigation,
arrest, prosecution and
imprisonment; and through
rehabilitation during impris-
onment and preparation for
re-entry into communities
once gang members com-
plete their sentences.
According to Emery
Gainey, director of the At-
torney General’s Victim Ser-
vices and Criminal Justice
programs, gangs now infest
every nook and cranny of
Florida. Gainey is leading
the attorney general’s anti-
gang strategy.
“We have a serious
gang problem that many in
Florida continue to deny,”
said Gainey, a 25-year vet-

(Gainesville) Sheriff’s De-
partment. “In the Florida

Abducted Woman’s Call for
Help to 911 Ignored by Police
TAMPA - Jennifer John-
son had about a minute to
talk before a 911 operator in
Plant City lost a connection
with her.
“Ma’am, I’m in a trunk
right now,” the 31-year-old
Tampa mother yelled on a
copy of the call released
today. “They got me in
the trunk. … I don’t know
where I’m at.”
Soon after the call dis-
connected, she was dead.
Prosecutors released
the call along with 700
pages of discovery material
that outlines the kidnapping
and first-degree murder case
against Vincent George
Brown Jr., Johnson’s on-
again, off-again boyfriend
and the father of her daugh-
ter, Je’Neiyce.
The material also con-
tains a report that Plant
City police corroborated
today showing they never
sent an officer to try to find
Johnson.
This contradicts dis-
patch logs the department
provided to News Chan-
nel 8 in December. At that
time, the agency said the
logs showed an officer had
been sent to search a four-
mile stretch of Interstate 4 in
Thonotosassa, where a cell-
phone tower had picked up
Johnson’s call.
Plant City police Capt.
Darrell Wilson said today
that an administrative re-
view found that officer was
working an unrelated secu-
rity check in the area.
“There was never an
officer dispatched,” Wilson
said. “That call log was for
something different.”
Police Chief Bill Mc-
Daniel’s office said he was
unavailable for comment
today.
‘I Guess We Shouldn’t
Have Assumed’
A Plant City communi-
cations operator recorded a
911 call with Johnson at 5:
30 a.m. Nov. 15 that lasted
about 1 minute 20 seconds.
The conversation was so
brief that Johnson did not
provide a description of her
car and could not say where
she had been kidnapped, the
documents say.
The operator had trouble
hearing Johnson over loud

The operator told her
immediate supervisor and a
patrol supervisor about the
call after it disconnected,
but neither listened to the
call nor took any action, a
report in the discovery docu-
ments says.
The log police provided
in December showed an of-
ficer was dispatched at 5:
38 a.m. that day along the
interstate.
Today, Wilson said the
department thought that of-
ficer had been sent to search
for Johnson because of the
agency’s policy to send an
officer to the last-known
location of a disconnected
911 call.
“I guess we shouldn’t
have assumed,” he said.
Johnson’s phone did
not have global-positioning
system technology to help
police pinpoint where she

“It’s devastating for me
to hear,” Rachel Johnson,
Jennifer’s sister, said of the
911 call. “She was reaching
out for help, but no one was
there to help her. I think
about it every day, and
there’s nothing I can do.”
Only Chance To Cry
For Help
Johnson’s aunt, Levery
White, said even if the po-
lice were unable to find her,
they should have tried.
“They didn’t even send
nobody. They didn’t care,”
she said.
Relatives reported John-
son missing the evening of
Nov. 15 after she did not
show up for her daughter’s
birthday party.
Tampa police tracked
her cell-phone activity
through the phone company
and on the morning of Nov.
18 discovered the 911 call
had hit on a cell-phone
tower at Interstate 4 and
Thonotosassa Road.
Tampa police think the
911 call was the only oppor-
tunity Johnson had to com-
municate with authorities.
Johnson was found dead
the evening of Nov. 18 in the
garage of a vacant house in
Lakeland, just south of In-
terstate 4 at the Kathleen
Road exit. Her cell phone
was tucked in her bra.
Phone records indicate
that from about 8:15 a.m.
Nov. 15 until the phone
ran out of power, its signal
pinged off a cell tower near
the house where her body
was found. She made no
other calls.
Brown, 39, is accused of
killing Johnson on Nov. 15,
Je’Neiyce’s 2nd birthday.
He has pleaded not guilty
to the charges.
Tampa police spokes-

Waxman’s bill, called
the Family Smoking
Prevention and Tobacco
Control Act, was debated
Wednesday in the House of
Representatives. The bill
would not ban cigarettes and
other tobacco products, but
would allow control over
the amounts of nicotine and
other chemicals that will be
allowed in cigarettes.
It would also allow con-
trol over how the products
are marketed, would publish

products, and would pro-

argue are intended to appeal
to children.

Pistachios Recalled due to

Salmonella Compiled from Reports

The Food and Drug

of Public Health (CDPH)
are investigating Salmonella
contamination in pistachio
products sold by Setton
Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc.,
Calif. FDA recommends
that consumers avoid
eating pistachio products
until more information is

infections in young children,
frail or elderly people, and

interagency communica-
tion among law enforcement
units in Sunrise, Lauderhill,

indictment of five gang
members, all ages 18-22,
who robbed South Florida-
area Dunkin’ Donut stores
and killed two men in the
process.
“One was a self-pro-
claimed Blood (gang
member) who shot a man
in the back with a shotgun
as he was sitting in the store.
When the detective asked
him why, he said, ‘I wanted
to up my body count’ in the
gang,” Lamberti sighed.
“We had another case
where a new gang member
shot and randomly killed
a man walking down the
street, because it was part
of a gang initiation.”
Lamberti said that ap-
proximately 80 gangs are
in active operation in Bro-
ward, that his agency has
identified some 227 new
gang members in 2008, and
that his department made
385 gang arrests, evenly
distributed among males
and females.
“There are commonali-
ties among gang members:
no structured families, no
role models, broken fami-
lies. We can’t arrest our-
selves out of this problem,”
Lamberti explained.
“We can deal with them
on the back end. We are
good at arresting people.
Working on the front end
(through gang prevention)
is better and less expensive,
but it’s not a law enforce-
ment issue.”
Ubieta of Miami-
Dade also spoke about
his agency’s longstanding
relationship with its Bro-
ward County counterparts.
He also said multi-agency
cooperation had become
better as a consequence of
national security procedures
put in place after the 9/11
terrorist attacks.

about 200 or so in their data-

can all relate to the
curiosity that comes
sometime between
the second week
and sixth month
of dating a man we
really like. It starts
as a half-conscious
curiosity, but soon
becomes a constant
questioning: Does
he see our relation-
ship as long-term
love, or a fun, yet
fleeting, fling?
Signs he sees
your relationship
as long term
Through my years of studying relation-
ships, I have put together a list of indica-
tors that the man you’re with is playing for
keeps…as opposed to just playing around.
And while you certainly need not notice all
of these signs, you should see a majority…or
at least the absence of their opposites. Fi-
nally, while you might start fantasizing
about the future on date three, as a general
rule, I wouldn’t even expect some of these
signals to surface until you’ve been seeing
one another for at least a couple of months,
but probably more like six months to a year
and a half.
He uses the “we” word when speaking
of the future
Even if you haven’t gotten to the point
of formally planning a future together, a man
who’s looking long term will accidentally
(or on purpose) speak of tomorrow as if
you’ll be together. Comments like, “I could
see us living in the city some day,” “When
we’re older I’d like to live close to family,”
or even, “Next Christmas let’s visit my aunt
in Sacramento” are all positive signs.
He says the “L” word
And he says it freely, without pressure
or prompting.
He wants to share in spirituality
If you are both Christians, it’s a good
sign if he wants to pray and/or attend church
together, two deep and emotional experi-
ences that feel family-like. If he’s not a
Christian man, he should at least be inter-
ested in learning about your beliefs. Aside
from just wanting to understand who you
are, if he’s not a Christian, and he’s thinking
long term, he’ll likely be trying to work out
how your religious beliefs will fit together,
especially if children are to be involved.
He allows female friendships to fade
This is an important and often-over-
looked indicator (discussed in detail in
“Regina Gets Real: Your man constantly
chats with female friends—are you wrong in
asking him to hang it up?” November 2008).
The fact is in most happily married couples,
neither partner retains close friendships with
(straight) members of the opposite sex; it’s
threatening, it erodes the intimacy of the
couple, and it displays disrespect. After
all, there’s no need to have second-string
women waiting in the wings when you feel
you’ve found the one for life.
He integrates you into his group of
male friends
When he imagines you’ll be together
long term, he wants to make sure you can
coexist with his group of guys. Because
it’s easy when dating a woman to keep her
separate from friends; but when marriage
is on his mind, he knows the two will have
to mix and mingle…and he hopes it will
be happily.
He introduces you to family (and wants
you to like his mother)
Same as with his friends, if he’s playing
for keeps, he envisions years of holidays,
visits, and gatherings. He wants to get his
parent’s opinions of you, and see how well
you handle them. Even though many people
pick spouses who don’t get along with their
families, the fact that he makes introductions
and tries to facilitate familial feelings is what
lets you know he sees your relationship as
serious. If you are greeted by his clan with
comments like, “So you’re Kendra; we’ve
heard so much about you!” even better.
He opens up emotionally
A man who wants a future with you
won’t just stick to safe and surface, dinner-
date-appropriate topics. He’ll be willing to
take the risk of opening up about his beliefs,
values, hopes, and dreams. He’ll do so be-
cause, while it’s scary, he knows he must
assess similarity on the serious subjects if
you are to build a life together.
He doesn’t pressure for premature sex
Of course he may want to. And he’ll
likely even ask. But the truth is if a man
feels you are future material, he doesn’t need
the nooky immediately, because he knows it
will come eventually. To the contrary, when
a man sees you simply as “fun,” he feels he
should actually be having some.
He doesn’t want to date others
While this may seem like a given if

you’ve been dating awhile, what’s impor-
tant is whether he mentions monogamy…or
whether he grudgingly gives in after two
years, kicking and screaming all the way.
Like quitting smoking and early-morning
jogs, monogamy is one of those commit-
ments that is rarely kept if agreed to under
duress.
He has a healthy sense of jealousy
Of course it’s a fine line between
healthy jealously and being improperly
possessive, but a man who feels long-term
love does not like the thought of someone
else with “his” woman. So as long as it’s
not out of hand, or he doesn’t discourage
you from going after your own goals, a man
who simply couldn’t care less if the hand-

might not actually, well, care less.

an we all just get along?” were
the famous words spoken by
Rodney King at his post con-
frontation press conference. For years af-
terwards, it was the catch phrase of choice
for many people when dealing with rela-
tionship issues. What was interesting about
the interview and the use of the phrase after
the interview was that the question never
received an answer.
You would think that having asked that
question somewhere in the background
noise in the interview room you would
have heard some Yes responses. However,
every time we heard that question asked in
public it was never followed by an answer.
Why? We think it’s because people realize
that the question is asking for something that
takes a lot of work to provide. And the noisy
silence after the question is our collective
attempts to hide the truth that for many the
answer is maybe not.
It is the “maybe not” answer that is
contributing to the alarming relationship
statistics of our society and of the church.
Over 50 percent of first time marriages end
in divorce. The percentage of relationship
failures increases to 60 percent in recent
years; and the average time people spend
with another is decreasing dramatically.
And it would be dishonest for us not to
also admit that Christian relationships are
suffering almost the same percentages of
failure.
What is wrong? We would like to believe
that most people do not get involved with
the intent of making each other miserable?
Wasn’t there something that they saw in
each other that made them conclude that
getting together was the right and obvi-
ous thing to do? Did they love each other
or have feelings that maybe this could go
somewhere? In most cases the answer is
of course yes.

ing dates and preplanned outings is, ironi-
cally, a popular method for keeping things
casual. Therefore, if your guy moves into
the more comfortable and intimate “hanging
out” (especially at his house), he’s probably
planning for a longer union.
He shows some interest in your inter-
ests
Okay, so he might not excitedly ex-
plain, “The Marc Jacobs sample sale starts
in 15 minutes, let’s move!” However, taking
some small interest in your hobbies and pas-

go to your separate homes. If you are not
feeling sociable, you can cancel the party,

On the other hand, you are compelled
to face your discomforts when you get seri-
ous and contemplate marriage as in being
engaged. It is with these realities in mind
that we accept the privilege and challenge of
speaking to the issues of relationships. We
were eager to do so. We believe in the value
of taking time to develop good relationships
both because they become the foundation for
a good marriage and because they are a good
thing in an of themselves. We are convinced
that God did not create the concept of having
a meaningful relationship as a punishment
for his people.
We also believe that if your goal is a
good marriage, it does not come naturally.
Having a successful marriage is the result of
learned behaviors and acquired skills. We
love the Living Bible’s rendering of Prov-
erbs 12:1a – “To learn you must be willing to
be taught.” We’re sure that you’re interested
so let’s get started.
Because we conduct relationship re-
treats and seminars around the country and
overseas, we get an opportunity to ask ques-
tions of a variety of people. What are the
difficulties you’re facing ? The list is long:
“They don’t treat me right.” He doesn’t talk
to me.” I don’t love her; I just like hanging
out.” I can’t stand _____ .” You could fill
in the blanks. How do you tackle all these
problems? We would like to suggest that the
first step in fixing problems is not to take the
problems one at a time, but rather to develop
sions—i.e. “I want to try that Indian restau-
rant you like”—is a sure sign he’s thinking
long term. Along the same lines, readily
attending events thrown by your family or
friends is also telling. Bonus points if such
events require a suit and tie.
He mentions marriage in a positive light
Men who are seeking short-term fun,
steer clear of even the word marriage. And
they certainly don’t play up other people’s
pairings with statements like, “Rick’s get-
ting married to Sharone; isn’t that great?!”
In fact, if they do mention the “M” word,
it’s generally in a negative light (i.e. “Rick’s
walking the plank,” “throwing in the towel,”
or “taking the plunge of death”).
The final word
The bottom line is that, while you can
use these signs as a general guide, the true
test is your own intuition. If you feel in your
God-given gut he’s not in it for good, you
are probably right.

to building a great marriage. “Even the
best marriages have problems. Often the
difference between a healthy marriage
and a defective one is not the number or
severity of problems encountered but in the
way problems are dealt with. Thus, the first
problem we must examine is the problem of
solving problems.”
In other words, if lack of communica-
tion, waning love, financial disputes, to
name a few, are the smoke of relationship
conflict, then the lack of problem-solving
strategies is the fire. One of the best gifts
you can bless yourself with is conflict reso-
lution skills. Indeed, having this ability is
worth its weight in gold whether you’re
married, single or divorced.
Conflicts are born of differences of opin-
ion and outlook. Which are not character
flaws in and of themselves. There is no
question that people are different. We see
things from our personal perspectives. In
fact, our positions and opinions are to us al-
most identical to the truth as we see it. That
is not to say that our opinions are the truth,
but we have a very hard time accepting the
thought that we just might be wrong.
When we meet someone we meet a per-
son who certainly has different opinions and
perspectives. But they too are convinced
that they are right. Add to the mix that
they are as willing to defend their position
as you are to defend yours and you have
problems. The stage is set for war or for
compromise. The final straw in this situ-
ation is the fact that we see any challenge
to our position as an attack against us as a
person. Of course we are going to protect
ourselves at all costs.
When people want to get past these
sticky issues they usually choose to fix the
problems by ignoring them. It’s not that big
of a deal, they say, or I am going to ignore
my feelings because I want to keep peace.
But peace is hardly what they’re keeping.
They are literally harboring irritation which

into anger and then into rage. Their rage is
like the built up steam in a pressure cooker
left too long on the stove. The next step is
the explosion.
Good problem solving strategies can
keep that pot from ever getting onto the
stove. The absolute first step in this strat-
egy is to adopt an objective overview. The
foundational truth for relationships is that
differences are not necessarily character
flaws! Genesis chapter 1:27 states “So God
created man in his own image, in the image
of God created he him; male and female
created he them. KJV Genesis chapter 5:
2 contributes to our understanding by stat-
ing that not only did God create male and
female, he also blessed them.
Our point is that men and women are
different and those differences are creative
differences, and those differences received
the blessing of the Lord in the beginning.
Therefore, the blessed creatively different
characters of men and women are not the
problem. God made us this way. Try tak-
ing a different look at the issues with which
you disagree first before you declare them a
problem. You just may discover that you’re
fussing about something God sent to be a
blessing to you.
Clearly, we don’t have the space to
examine some specific examples this time,
but we encourage you to write us and make
some suggestions of problems you
would like to have
solved. In the
meantime, we
will keep giving
you tips on how
to develop ways
to resolve the
conflicts and
to discover
the hidden
blessings in
your build-
ing relation-

xperts estimate that food allergies
have tripled in the U.S. over the
past 10 years. While up to 15 per-
cent of Americans believe they have a food
allergy, the real number is closer to 8 percent
of children and 2 percent of adults with true
allergic reactions to food.
Food Allergies vs. Food Intolerance
Typically, when someone eats a food
to which they are allergic, their immune
system reacts in a variety of ways. The
greatest danger is anaphylactic shock, which
can be life-threatening, but other reactions
include rashes, itching and swelling, hives,
wheezing or difficulty breathing. The most
common food allergens include peanuts, tree
nuts, shellfish, eggs, wheat, soy products and
milk, which can be especially difficult for
parents of school-aged children. The list of
foods that allergic kids must avoid can be
lengthy, requiring some schools to adopt
“forbidden foods” rules or establish al-
lergy-free eating zones.
Food allergies should not be confused
with food intolerances. People with intoler-
ances may experience digestive issues after
eating a problem food, or even behavior
changes, but their reactions aren’t related
to their immune system. For example, an
individual with lactose intolerance lacks
enzymes needed to digest dairy, so they ex-
perience gas, bloating and stomach cramps
after drinking milk.

strong for their battle with the disease.

can wreck havoc on our bodies,
but did you know that diet plays
an even bigger role in cancer treatment?
According to the National Cancer Institute,
malnutrition is seen in as many as 40 percent
of cancer-related deaths.
“Sixty-five to 70 percent of advanced
cancer patients suffer some degree of mal-
nutrition.” says Dr. Pankaj Vashi, gastroen-

to life-threatening anaphylactic shock.
Food Allergy Treatments
Any violent reactions should be im-
mediately addressed by a doctor. Keep a
food diary with details of the reaction if
you often experience rashes or asthma-like
symptoms after meals. Your diary, along
with a physical exam and lab tests, will help
your doctor identify and treat any food al-
lergies. Self-diagnosing is not a good idea,
since unnecessarily eliminating foods can
lead to malnutrition and unbalanced diets,
especially in children.
Food allergies cannot be cured, but
gastroenterology/nutrition and metabolic
support for Cancer Treatment Centers of
America (CTCA). “The consequences of
poor nutrition are alarming: Malnourished
patients have double the average length of
stay in the hospital compared to well-nour-
ished patients, and 45 percent of malnour-
ished patients are hospitalized 20 percent
longer.”
How does malnutrition affect a patient’s
chance of achieving remission? When the
body doesn’t receive adequate nutrition, it
struggles to tolerate chemotherapy, resulting
in increased side effects. Weight loss is also
a major issue in cancer patients, and even a
5 percent reduction in body weight can lead
to health problems.
“Unfortunately, only 30 percent of
cancer patients learn about the role of
nutrition in battling their disease,” says
Carolyn Lammersfeld, national director of
nutrition at CTCA. “Many hospitals only
have one dietitian per 200 patients. Nearly
two-thirds of the patients arriving to CTCA
for cancer treatment are malnourished. At
CTCA, the ratio is one nutritionist to every
20 patients.”

Even when patients are unable to eat,

brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage and cauli-
flower all have an active ingredient called
“indoles,” which research suggests may be
a helpful tool for fighting cancer.
- Legumes. Including such foods
as beans, peas and lentils, legumes contain
fiber, folic acid, protein and cancer-fighting
phytochemicals.

J
amaal “Mali Music” Pollard was
born on January 12, 1988 in Phoe-
nix, AZ. And while Jamaal is who
he is, music is what he is.
Jamaal began playing piano at age 5 and
was so naturally gifted that formal lessons
proved more of a hindrance than a help.
Still appreciative of his classical training, he
quickly mastered piano and more recently
acoustic guitar and electric bass.
Since age 11, Jamaal has been actively
pursuing his music ministry and career. He is
currently the Minister of Music at Faith on the

R ecently, President Obama chal-
lenged all Americans to overcome
the stale debates that have para-
lyzed progress on education so
that we can offer every child, everywhere
in this country, the chance to out-compete
any worker, anywhere in the world. In the
African American community, the need
for real reform is an urgent matter. Right
now the majority of African American
children attend public schools while the
drop out rate remains high compared to
other groups across the country. Improv-
ing our schools is the most immediate way
to extend opportunities to generations of
African Americans. That is a central mis-
sion of the budget that President Obama
is submitting to Congress.
This budget makes a substantial down
payment on our education agenda – an
agenda aimed at preparing Americans
from the cradle up through a career. That
means raising the quality of early child-
hood programs; ending state caps on the
number of allowable charter schools;
rewarding good teachers, and removing
bad ones; adding learning time to the
school year; and putting the dream of a
college degree within reach for anyone
who wants one.
It is an ambitious agenda and enacting
it will require both resources and political
will. We have the resources. But do we
have the will?
I was heartened by the reaction to
the President’s speech. Union leaders
vowed to have an open mind on issues
like performance pay, higher standards,
and charters, asking only that reform be
done “with them, not to them.” Officials
at every level of government are also
broadly supportive.
They are also asking the right ques-
tions: how can we ensure that taxpayer
dollars make a meaningful and lasting
difference in the classroom? How can
we make sure these funds are spent ef-
fectively?
The answer is simple: we are demand-
ing absolute transparency for every tax
dollar spent and we will use the power
of the bully pulpit and the power of the
purse to reward what is working and to
reform what is not.

Educating Our Way to a
Better Economy
help keep teachers teaching and students
learning in schools across America. But if
all we do is perpetuate the status quo, we
will miss this historic opportunity. That’s
why states that are accepting funding from
the Recovery Act must commit to making
four reforms. They must:
n Adopt internationally-bench-
marked standards and assessments that
better prepare students for college and a
career. Today, some states intentionally
lower standards, essentially lying to kids
by telling them they are ready for college
when they are not. A number of states
are already raising standards. Every state
should.
n Build high-quality data systems
that track a student’s academic career,
making it possible to tell which teach-
ers, programs, and schools are effective.
Better data – on everything from quiz
scores to dropout rates – can foster a
shared understanding among educators
and parents about what is necessary to
improve a child’s education, creating, as
President Obama said, “a culture of ac-
countability.”
n Recruit more high-quality educa-
tors to underperforming schools as well as
to subjects like math and science, where
there is a teacher shortage. If recruiting
teachers and principals to the schools
and subjects that need them most means
offering them extra pay, we should pro-
vide it.
n Support effective strategies to turn
around underperforming schools. Clos-
ing failing schools and replacing staff is
tough medicine, but the alternative is un-
acceptable. Kids have only one chance
at an education – and we need to ensure
that they are receiving the best education
possible.
To receive subsequent funding from
the Recovery Act, states must develop a
detailed plan to advance these reforms.
States with the most comprehensive and
cutting-edge reform plans can also win
a share of a $5 billion “Race to the Top”
fund – a portion of which will go directly
to districts and non-profits that are achiev-

Segregation
T here is good and bad news on the
school desegregation front. First,
the good: There has been a dramat-
ic increase in the enrollment of students
of color, most of them Hispanic, in the
nation’s suburban schools. Now, for the
bad, even though the school districts are
less segregated, the schools themselves
are not. Students within the schools are
not connecting and taking full advantage
of the benefits a student body can bring.
According to a recently released
report, minority enrollment in suburban
school districts has grown 28 percent
in the last decade and a half. Hispanic
students make up the majority of those
students of colors enrolling in the often
better financed and supported suburban
schools. However, these same suburban
schools, while experiencing record enroll-
ments of black, Latino and Asian students,
are growing more segregated.
In 1954, the Supreme Court, in Brown
vs. the Board of Education, ruled that
separate educational facilities are unequal.
Historically, schools with a mostly black
and Latino student body, usually located
in the inner city, lack needed student sup-
port services and offer a less than rigor-
ous curriculum. Parents, frustrated, either
moved to more affluent districts, sacrific-
ing along the way, or sent their children to
schools outside of their district, in search
of a better education. The increased en-
rollment of minority students in suburban
schools is a direct result of that search.
Yet, despite the work of the courts and
the actions of the parents, students are
still segregated.
This segregation within the schools
could simply be an issue of students who
are unfamiliar with each other not reach-
ing results.

on Americans to stop fighting with each
other about education and start fighting
for our kids. That means not only passing
the President’s budget, but also doing all
we can – as parents, teachers, principals,
administrators, and national leaders – to
help restore America’s global leadership

ing out to those who appear to be different
than they are. After all, suburban schools
were, for generations, predominantly
white and more affluent. Rarely would
you see more than a handful of non-white
students walking the halls. Interaction and
communication between the students
could go a long way in desegregating the
diversifying student body.
This is where the school district comes
in. Schools are supposed to prepare stu-
dents for life outside the classroom. If a
student can learn at an early age to interact
with and, most importantly, understand,
those from different racial, ethnic and
economic backgrounds, they will not
only succeed in the classroom but also
later on, in the work place. Additionally,
suburban schools have a stake in making
sure minority students feel comfortable
and not like an outsider; improving their
learning experience and making sure
their graduation rates are on par with
their white peers.
We still have work to do. Countless
studies have proven that school segrega-
tion costs students. Even if the segrega-
tion occurs within a better performing
school district, all students – minority and
white – suffer. Suburban school districts
implement diversity trainings, much like
those seen in corporate America, which
promotes acceptance and understanding
among students. This is one-step in en-
suring students who are from seemingly
different worlds are able to study and
work together and enhances the learning
experience for all.

transplant waiting list, and

At any given time, more than
3,300 people are awaiting a
bone marrow transplant.
But the picture is not totally
bleak.
“Donor rates have improved
considerably,” as a result of
efforts to educate the minority
community about the need
for organ donation, Dr. Clive
O. Callender, founder of the
National Minority Organ Tissue
Transplant Education Program

Callender recently
performed a kidney transplant
middle school and a few are
freshman in high school. Fifty-
eight students are currently
enrolled in the free preschool
program.
Prior to the program, the
vast majority of high school
students from Tangelo Park
did not go on to college and
the drop out rate was close to
60 percent. Today, the high
school drop out rate is zero
on Washington D.C. Council
member and former Mayor
Marion Barry, who received the
organ from a family friend.

Orlando Man Killed in Late Night Home Invasion

ORLANDO-- Dennis Williams was killed
Tuesday night at the home he shared with
his girlfriend when masked men forcibly

What Jobs Will the Stimulus Create?

Obama put his top priority for America’s beleaguered
workers in simple
terms: “Now is the
time to jumpstart job
creation.”
The work of
reversing the labor
economy’s slide will
not be so simple. The
American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act
seeks to bring timely
relief to 11.6 million
unemployed Ameri-
cans and 734,000
discouraged workers

The jobs created by the Recovery Act will make a
world of difference in the lives of millions, even though it
can’t put everyone back to work tomorrow.
“The approximately 3.5 million jobs created or saved
will reflect the current distribution of jobs across the
economy,” touching all industries, says Heidi Shierholz,
an economist at the Economic Policy Institute. Due to the
severity of the recession, “that’s not going to fill in the em-
ployment gap entirely,” she says. About 3.6 million jobs
have already been lost in the recession that began Decem-
ber 2007, according to a February 2009 BLS report, and
no one expects the losses to stop anytime soon.
Four strategic sectors will receive money targeted for
job creation, either directly or indirectly: energy (459,000
jobs), infrastructure (377,000), education (250,000) and
healthcare (244,000), according to a report by Obama
administration officials.
And the broader stimulus created by government work,
recession relief and tax relief is projected to create even
greater numbers of jobs across the economy.
Alternative Energy Jobs Get a Jolt
The stimulus package calls for unprecedented spend-
ing on clean energy, including $60 billion in loan guaran-
tees for alternative energy projects such as wind turbines
and coal gasification.
The money is sorely needed, because the green sector
has been especially hard-hit in the downturn. “Since No-
