PART-A
[PARAGRAPH TYPE]
Q.1 to Q.5 has four choices (A), (B), (C), (D) out of which ONE OR MORE may be correct. [5 4 = 20]
Paragraph for question nos. 1 to 3
Everybody is familiar with the difficulty involved in lifting a weight. You just have to carry your suitcase to
the train to realize that. Renaissance scientists thought of simple machines that would help them lift a
weight without acceleration. In simple terms, a simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the
direction or magnitude of a force. In general, they can be defined as the simplest mechanisms that
provide mechanical advantage. Usually the term refers to the six classical simple machines :
(1) Lever (2) Wheel and axle (3) Pulley (4) Inclined plane (5) Wedge
(6) Screw
To understand this idea let us consider incline plane. If we want to lift a mass m, we need to apply at least
a force of mg. But if we instead pull it along the inclined plane, the force required to lift the load is
reduced.
If there are no friction losses, the work done on the load is equal to the work done by the applied force.
This allows an increase in the output force at the cost of a proportional decrease in the distance moved
by the load. The ratio of the output force to the input force is the mechanical advantage of the machine.
Output force in cases we are discussing is the weight of the body being lifted and input force is the force
we are applying. Assume that the acceleration of the body being lifted is zero in each case. A simple
machine with no friction or elasticity is called an ideal machine.
In case of inclined plane, force applied F is the input force and its weight is output force.

F

If we want to move the block without acceleration, F = mg sin u. We can easily see that the rate of work
done by force is equal to the rate at which energy is being extracted by gravity.
The input power pulling the load up the ramp is given by : P
in
= FV,
and the power out is : P
out
= mgV sin u
Equate the power in to the power out to obtain the mechanical advantage as :

Paragraph for question nos. 4 to 5
In a defective (but intresting) model of J.J. Thomson, he proposed that an atom consists of a uniform
cloud of positive charge in which electrons stay like plums in a pudding. Since the electric field at the
centre of a uniform volume charge distribution is zero, an electron can stay in equilibrium at the centre. It
can also oscillate with certain frequency e about the mean (stable equilibrium) position, that is , the
centre C. Thus, the osciallting electron can emit electromagnetic radiation.
