Hybrid palletizer offers new features
Alvey 950 hybrid palletizers have been enhanced with new fea-
tures, including an on-board stretch bander that adds stability
to otherwise unstable loads and an integrated control system
that allows the conventional palletizer and its robotic arms to
operate from a single PLC. The hoist-mounted stretch bander
is ideal for industries with small and lightweight packaging
because it reduces or eliminates the need for tie sheets and
stretch wrapping. By using fewer consumables than traditional
stretch wrapping, the bander reduces
time and material requirements. The inte-
grated PLC operates without traditional
proprietary robot controllers, streamlines
complex control communication, reduces
response time and minimizes changeover
delays. Intelligrated, 877-315-3400,

Collapsible 60-gallon
drum for food, powder
or liquid handling
E
ngineered for the food, powder and liquid handling markets, the collapsible 60-gal-
lon plastic drum is offered as an alternative to steel and fiber drums for cost savings
through a better return ratio. Recyclable, the drum features a 40 x 24 x 20-inch footprint and is composed
of three components: base, sidewalls and lid. To eliminate joint cracks and prevent penetration of devices or con-
taminants, all components feature offset surfaces and interlocking flanges. The inside and outside surfaces of the
sidewalls are smooth for easy cleaning. Hinged in the center, the sidewalls sport a one-way inward fold allowing the
drum to fold flat in seconds. Four assembled drums interlock to cube a 48 x 40-inch pallet made either of wood or
plastic. Buckhorn, 800-543-4454, www.buckhorninc.com.
Access Internet, capture data with
pocket-sized IP67-rated device
Lightweight and compact, the rugged Dolphin 70e Black smart
device weighs 7 ounces and is 0.75-inches thick, allowing it to
be stored in a pocket when not in use. The hybrid
device offers auto-identification and data capture
users a sleeker form factor than a typical AIDC indus-
trial device that is tougher than a consumer-grade
phone. Capable of scanning, accessing the Internet
and capturing data, the device features an IP67 rating
for submersion in water, completely dust-proof con-
struction and 4.3-inch capacitive touch display that
can be viewed in direct sunlight. Its user-replaceable
battery delivers up to 12 hours of operating life.

Rugged mobile computers support
HTML5 capable browser
A new HTML5-capable browser enables the development of
OS agnostic Web applications that can run on iOS, Android
and select rugged mobile computers from the supplier. This
improves workflow efficiency and flexibility to mobile work-
forces. The browser supports applications running online (con-
nected to a Web server), offline (no connection to a Web server)
or in combination. Built on the Webkit engine, the browser
is preloaded and free of licensing fees or license activation
requirements on multiple supplier mobile computer models. For
improved workflow efficiency, data can be stored locally on the
device until synchronization with the back-end server, elimi-
nating time lost due to poor cellular coverage. Transactional
data can also be updated quickly with minimal overhead mak-
ing workflows more responsive. Intermec, 800-347-2636,
www.intermec.com.
Mobile headset computer increases
worker safety on job sites
The HC1 hands-free enterprise mobile com-
puter leverages advanced voice recognition,
head gestures and video streaming to navigate
applications that access and view business-
critical documents and schematics. The head-
set computer can be used for maintenance,
repair, operations/overhaul, and training and simulation appli-
cations to improve inspection time and accuracy, reduce labor
rates and increase safety. It is ideal for harsh environments and
remote locations where access to complex graphical data or text
is needed but using a laptop or handheld device is impractical.
In addition to local document access, the device connects to
local Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to one of the suppliers smartphones or
mobile hotspots, allowing push and pull of data between the
headset computer and remote networks. Motorola Solutions,
866-416-8545, www.motorola.com.

Pallets
Hygienic plastic pallets
A
line of plastic pallets are lighter than wood,
making them easier to handle and less
expensive to ship. Completely recyclable
at the end of their usable life, the hygienic pal-
lets are immune to insect contamination, as
pests cannot penetrate the plastic. They do not
absorb pathogens or bacteria, and do not require
fumigation or heat treatment. For traceability
and security, the pallets feature embedded RFID
tags for immediate identification contaminated shipments and to facilitate product safety
recalls. The pallets have been certified as usable in food processing by NSF International.
Intelligent Global Pooling Systems (iGPS), 800-884-0225, www.igps.net.
Presswood automotive pallet
offered as alternative to plastic
The Inca presswood pallet is now offered
for use in the automotive industry as an
alternative to plastic returnable pallets.
The pallet features a 48 x 45-inch footprint
and a nestable form to meet the needs
of Tier 1 and Tier 2 automotive suppli-
ers. Manufactured from a combination
of wood fiber and resin subjected to high
heat and pressure, the structural density is
greater than air-dried red oak. This stiffness
enhances the integrity of a unit load, result-
ing in less package and product damage
during transit. The finished pallets provide
a 4:1 space savings ratio over conventional
pallets, and because they are considered
processed wood, they are not regulated by
IPPC-ISPM 15 for global shipping. Litco
International, 330-539-5433, www.
litco.com.
Pallet is detectible in quality
control x-ray inspections
Manufactured with a special compound
that is opaque to x-ray and fluoroscopic
imaging, Radiopaque ProStack pallets
are ideal for use in food, beverage and
pharmaceutical processing applications. Because the pallet is clearly visible in
imaging inspections common in cleanroom and processing areas, its easier to
detect product contaminates as part of quality control. The pallet is rated for
a 30,000-pound static load or a 5,000-pound dynamic load. Edge rackable to
2,200 pounds, they offer four-way fork entry and are made from 100% recy-
clable, FDA-approved high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Polymer Solutions,
877-444-7225, www.prostackpallets.com.
Protect grocery products with anti-skid surface
The reusable, plastic 40 x 48-inch grocery distribution pallet increases the use
of space per truckload to deliver greater shipping efficiency and reduced costs.
When empty, the pallets nest together for optimal space utilization in standard
53-foot trailers during return trips. To hold cases and boxes in place during
transit, it features an anti-skid surface. Contoured corners and smooth surfaces
allow for easy handling and dura-
bility. The pallets have a smooth,
non-porous surface that does not
absorb moisture or odors and is easy
to clean. ORBIS, 888-307-2185,
www.orbiscorporation.com.
Wood pallet coating adds resistance to mold, mildew
Formulated for mold and mildew resistance, E-Fusion wood coating can be applied to the
surface of wooden pallets, pallet cut-stock, containers and other forms of lumber. The
substrate contains no phenols or other ingredients with volatility issues. Registered by
the NSF International nonfood compounds program, the coating meets USDA regulatory
requirements including FDA 21 CFR for appropriate use, ingredient and labeling in and
around food processing areas. X-Mold, 404-261-3349, www.xmold.net.

nesting height of 1.2 inches saves freight costs and storing capacities; a 53-foot trailer
can hold 2,340 pallets. For use in racks and/or double-stacking the pallet may be out-
fitted with three optional snap-on bottom skids. Cabka North America, 877-462-
2252, www.cabka.com.
Apply treatments to wood pallets with electrostatic spray system
The S-Fusion electrostatic pallet sprayer aids in the application of anti-mold, disin-
fectant or anti-fungal treatments. The sprayer applies the correct amount of substrate
without soaking the pallet to reduce drying time. Only the outer surface of the pallet
is dampened, leaving the core of the kiln-dried wood untouched. Features include
up to eight spray nozzles, variable speed stainless steel conveyor rollers, three-zone
chemical flow control, a filtered overspray reclaim system and touch-screen interface.
The system can be used in a stand-alone configuration, or in-line with existing man-
ufacturing processes. Smetco, 800-253-5400, www.smetco.com.
Produce 500,000 pallets per year
Mold and produce plastic pallets with the Lumina
PM-5 dual clamp system. Each clamp contains
a mold for a one-piece double deck heavy-duty
rackable and stackable structural plastic pallet. A
common two-stage injection system sequentially
fills both molds. During operation, a traversing
top-entry robot removes the pallets automatically and places them onto a conveyor.
The system includes molds, mold chiller, robot, plastic raw material blending/loading
and all accessories needed to produce up to 500,000 pallets per year. Wilmington

LIFT TRUCK NEWS
Upgraded drive unit
incorporated into all-electric
walkie, walkie/rider trucks
The all-electric, 24-volt PWX 30/40
walkie and HWX 30/40 walkie/rider
pallet trucks handle capacities of
6,000 and 8,000 pounds respectively.
Both feature an upgraded drive unit,
a stationary-mounted drive motor
to eliminate power cable flexing
during steering, and a hypoid gear
set for quieter motor operation.
Sleek, impact-resistant motor covers
offer additional protection to major
components. Both vehicles include
an integral gas strut that controls
he handle for smooth release and
reduced impact upon upward return.
For operator comfort, the floor and
foot room area has been increased
on the walkie/
rider to enhance
productivity.

with electric walkie
end-rider
F
or low-level order picking, long-distance transporting, and loading and unloading trailers, the
PWR30 electric walkie end-rider moves loads weighing up to 6,000 pounds at speeds as high as 9.3
miles per hour. Whether coasting or braking, the trucks regenerative braking system allows it to
come to a stop prior to the electromagnetic brake being applied, minimizing additional wear. Thick,
fabricated forks feature cast steel fork tips to withstand tough environments. For added productivity, an
electric coast control option can be added, eliminating the need for operators to step back onto the truck
to move to the next pick location. Challenging environments can be accommodated with the addition of
a corrosion protection package that includes galvanized chassis, pull rods, load wheel linkage, lift linkage
and forks. Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks, 800-648-5438, www.mit-lift.com.
Overhauled pallet truck yields improved
torque, regenerative braking
A series of enhancements have been added to an AC pallet
truck, including a new dual thumb-wheel control handle,
AC traction controller, electric disc brakes and wider
diameter drive motor. The dedicated, walkie-type control
handle is ergonomically engineered for better operator
grip and increased operability. To ensure long life and
durability, the truck includes a 12-inch diameter drive tire. The traction controller
and drive motor improve motor torque control and regenerative braking, while an
electric disc brake system eliminates the need for brackets, linkages and cables pre-
viously required by the mechanical brake system. By using controlled regenerative
braking, the brake system reduces component wear for longer life and eliminates
the need for routine maintenance. Toyota Material Handling U.S.A., 800-226-
0009, www.toyotaforklift.com.
AC-powered walkie pallet truck uses full-motor braking
Easily maneuvered in tight spaces, the WP 3000 series walkie pallet truck is
AC-powered by brushless motor technology that provides responsive acceleration,
smooth direction changes and consistent performance throughout the battery dis-
charge cycle. The trucks braking system uses full-motor braking to provide opera-
tors with smooth, consistent stops. Because braking occurs in the motor, energy is
returned to the battery for further efficiency gains. To reduce wear on the trucks
undercarriage, the unit features a 30% improvement in grade clearance at the
fork heel. The riser axle is positioned at the highest possible point on the forks,
while smooth, rounded, boxed-in fork tips simplify pallet entry. For enhanced
operator ergonomics, the control handle includes tactile raise and lower buttons
positioned for lift/lower and secure traction regardless of travel direction. Crown
Equipment, 419-629-2311, www.crown.com.

MINI CASE HISTORY
By Josh Bond, Associate Editor
Pallet positioner reduces
strain, increases control
M
anually loading pallets at floor level is a recipe for low productivity
and injuries associated with bending, reaching and stretching. Belimo
Customization, a designer and manufacturer of damper actuators and
control valves for HVAC systems, wanted to create a more ergonomic envi-
ronment for workers at nine conveyor lines in its Danbury, Conn., facility.
After the company installed an assortment of spring-actuated and hydraulic
level loaders that keep product at an optimal height, workers can now com-
fortably load pallets.
Six of the units, in place for more than six years, are the traditional spring
model introduced by the supplier (Southworth
Products, southworthproducts.com) nearly 30
years ago. The loader maintains the top layer of
a pallet load at a convenient height and can be
modified by changing the springs in its scissor
lift if a run of lighter or heavier loads is antici-
pated.
On three of the conveyor lines at the Danbury
plant, the boxes vary greatly in dimension
and weight every day. For these lines, Lenny
Casacalenda, the plants logistics manager,
purchased three powered hydraulic level load-
ers, each with a 2-ton load capacity. With this
model, the operator can precisely adjust the
height with a foot pedal. Electrical cables at the
plant run beneath the concrete floor to prevent
tripping hazards at these units.
Because of the many different configura-
tions of our products, the cartons arent always
of similar weights, so the powered model really
gives the power to the employees, to be able to
make sure the pallet is always in the best spot
for them, Casacalenda explains.
A pallet can also be rotated on the units turn-
table, allowing the operator to always work on
the nearside of the load rather than walking around it. When a pallet is full,
it is removed from the loader platform by forklift and driven to the appropri-
ate shipping dock.
Ive been in the industry about 20 years, says Casacalenda. Ive used
other models and tried out more at shows, and Ive always liked this product,
so for us it was the best choice.
A mix of spring-actuated and
hydraulic level loaders keeps pallets
at optimal height and orientation.

o support goods-to-person order fulfillment, pick-face replenishment, palletizing
and production buffering, the Multishuttle flexible staging solution consists of
multiple levels of rack structure, carrier vehicles, conveyor and software. Each
level of the rack includes a carrier vehicle that travels horizontally to access loads
stored in totes or trays by an extraction device. Flexible, the system fits into overhead
spaces or under and over obstructions for maximum cube utilization. For manual
back-up picking, work platforms in the rack aisles allow access to stock. The simplic-
ity of the modular carrier vehicles allows high system uptime, system redundancy,
low power consumption and quiet operation. Dematic, 877-725-7500, www.
dematic.us.
Heavy-duty vertical carousel

Laser-pointing pick-to-light integrated into VLM
Combining a laser-pointing pick-to-light system with a vertical
lift module, the new LaserViper system improves order picking
accuracy and productivity. The pointing system is located in the
pick window of the VLM. It
identifies items to be picked
with a red dot. The system
can pinpoint inventory as
small as a fraction of an inch,
allowing items such as vials,
fasteners and small boxes
of inventory to be located
immediately. Because the
system eliminates light bars
and indicators that operators
have to read before manu-
ally locating a stored item
in a tray, it also provides higher tray storage density. Sapient
Automation, 888-451-9711, www.getsapient.com.
Robotic, gantry-based
beverage case picking
A large-scale robotic case and
layer picking system for bev-
erage handling accommodates
high-volume, high-SKU distri-
bution demands. The system
coordinates automated stor-
age/retrieval systems, conveyor and multiple robotic gantries
to systematically pick products in singles or groups. Picks are
sent to the dock face in an optimized trailer load or palletizing
sequence. Distribution efficiency is enhanced by labor savings
and error-free picking. Compact, the storage space under the
gantry ensures higher processing rates per square foot without
fixed infrastructure such as racking or shelving. For traceabil-
ity, the system provides precise information on the location
of all products, as well as the ability to isolate SKUs in the
event of a problem or recall. RMT Robotics, 905-643-9700,
www.rmtrobotics.com.
Handle rolls, slings, spools
Constructed with two side frames and
equipped with vertically guided chains, the
Clasimat Basic carousel modules have sim-
ple universal structures suitable for future
expansion. Using a toothed crown wheel to
move its two lateral chain loops, the motor
rotates the trays like a dumbwaiter. Its
simple operation allows personnel to use
it without having to key in sophisticated
instructions. Operators enter a code, push
a button, and the machine trolleys the
requested item to the removal area or pick-
ing level. Adaptable, the equipment is ideal
for handling rolls, slings, tires, garments,
spools or trays of different sizes and capaci-
ties. Interlake Mecalux, 877-632-2589,
www.interlakemecalux.com.
High-performance shuttle
interfaces with multiple
load-handling devices
Ideal for highly dynamic stor-
age and buffer applications, the
Stingray shuttle features function-
ally separated travel and lift axes
for higher throughput performance
than stacker cranes, enabling capac-
ity and performance scalability.
Operators can vary the number
of shuttles deployed, as well as
change the configuration of tote
and shuttle lifts. For lower perfor-
mance requirement systems, shuttles can change levels with
a shuttle lift. Because it interfaces with a variety of load han-
dling devices, the shuttle handles totes, cartons and similar
load carriers in single or multi-deep racks. Lightweight con-
struction optimizes energy efficiency with high acceleration
and speed with reduced power consumption. TGW Systems,
231-798-4547, www.tgw-group.com.
AS/RS for cleanroom storage applications
Two automated storage and retrieval systems are offered for
use in cleanroom transport and storage applications. The
Clean Stocker CLS-50 buffers intrabay and interbay work
in progress with location modules that can be expanded as
required. Featuring an average cycle of 14 seconds, the AS/
RS may be specified with a non-contact power supply to
meet Class 1 cleanroom standards. Making effective use of
open spaces under floors and under roofs, the Clean Mini
Stocker CMS-50 mini-load AS/RS minimizes the occupation
space within the cleanroom. It also meets Class 1 clean-
room standards and operates at an average cycle time of
15 seconds. Daifuku Webb, 248-553-1000, www.
daifukuwebb.com.
Storage and retrieval system
handles multiple container sizes
To permit flexible handling of smaller batch sizes and increased
product diversity, the 2/4-deep storage system interfaces with
different container sizes for greater agility in automated small
parts storage facilities with multiple-deep storage. The system
can handle containers measuring 23.6 x 15.6
inches (600 x 400 millimeters) and 11.8 x
15.8 inches (300 x 400 millimeters) in any
combination. Goods can be stored without
being presorted by storage unit size, and the
retrieval machine has flexible access to each
load unit for series formation. Because of the
load handling devices capacity, containers do
not have to be divided into modules. Order
picking accuracy improves because only the
correct article is accessed with fewer machine
movements for longer maintenance intervals.

Goods-to-person picking with
horizontal carousel, VLM
A full line of flexible and scalable automated storage and
retrieval systems improves order picking and packing
through a goods-to-person product presentation that elimi-
nates walking, searching, reaching and bending activities.
The Viper vertical lift machine uses a series of trays stored
vertically on each side of a column with a robotic inserter/
extractor in the center. Trays are automatically scanned and
stored in the least amount of space or pre-assigned positions
for maximum throughput and density. Using multiple carou-
sels in an integrated workstation, the Hornet horizontal car-
ousel system continually pre-positions each pick location for the operator until the entire batch and
wave of orders are completed. The carousels length, bin width and shelf heights can be changed at
any time. Sapient Automation, 888-451-9711, www.getsapient.com. Booth 2016.
Handle loads up to 900 pounds in storage system
Saving 90% of floor space over traditional shelving, the LogiMat
compact storage lift handles tray loads up to 900 pounds. Similar to
an oversized drawer cabinet with two rows of traysone at the front
and one at the backa rack and spur gear lift located between the
rows picks or places individual trays from their respective positions,
and delivers them to the operators window at an ergonomic height.
Items are displayed on a touchscreen with a user-friendly operating
interface. The WMS transfers the order items directly to the storage
lift, where the respective trays of items are controlled and moved
to the operating window. This goods-to-person picking principle
enables six-times faster picking from trays as deep as 32 inches and
at widths greater than 13 feet. Schaefer Systems International, 877-
724-2327, www.ssi-schaefer.us. Booth 2003.

tem combines the suppliers AutoStore inven-
tory storage technology and high-speed pick
stations, with its fulfillment software suite.
The system allows orders to be filled up to
five times faster than manual shelving sys-
tems, at rates up to 1,000 picks per selector
per hour. With the systems flexible, scalable
infrastructure, inventory and throughput can
be increased independently to meet evolv-
ing business needs. By creating a cubed-out
warehouse, the system reduces space require-
ments by 60% over SKU storage in static bin

Dual-motion triggering alarm system
The Crossing Guard forklift collision awareness system
requires the detection of two separate motions to trig-
ger an alarm, reducing the occurrence of nuisance alarms.
Additionally, the system distinguishes the presence of
motionless individuals who might be obscured from the
forklift operators vision. Four adjustable sensorseither
infrared or ultrasonicmonitor the definable detection
area. In production pick up areas and locations where infra-
red is impractical, an optional weight-sensitive sensor model
may be specified. All models sound an audible alarm coupled with a high-
intensity LED alarms light. Features include a micro-processor that collects
and saves sensor activities, eco-friendly solar panel to trickle charge the
rechargeable DC battery using ambient warehouse light, and a second
battery to warn when the primary battery needs recharge, repair or
replacement. Flow-Rite Safety Solutions, 905-616-5509, www.crossing-

Warn pedestrians with projected safety light
Avoid forklift/pedestrian collisions with the installation of a blue safety
light on the vehicle. When the device is added to the rear portion of a
forklifts overhead guard, its two high-performance LED lamps project a
focused beam of blue light that appears on the ground behind the forklift.
The visual cue is more effective than backup alarms that can be drowned
out by employees wearing headphones or distracted by other tasks.
Features include an expected life of
20,000 hours and an IP67 rating for use
in wet environments and to withstand
power washing. Intella Liftparts, 616-

Monitor battery cell electrolyte
levels with indicator device
The Eagle Eye electrolyte level indicator accurately monitors and dis-
plays the status of battery cell electrolyte levels with a solid green or
blinking red light. Featuring a trimmable probe, the device does not
require calibration. Using captive sensing technology, the unit mea-
sures electrolyte levels without a direct current being drawn from
the cell, eliminating the potential for corrosion between plates and
probe. Product highlights include a sealed polypropylene lens that
protects the LED and electronics from impact and acid migration;
terminals sealed to the wires to prevent corrosion; and a reverse polarity protected light with
three self-resetting fuses. Flow-Rite Controls, 616-583-1700, www.flow-rite.com. Booth 947.
Supplement forklift camera systems
with radar detection device
The RadarEye forklift signaling system supplements camera
and monitor visibility solutions by sounding active alarms to
alert the operator when there is something or someone behind
the truck. When an object or person moves within the danger
zone to the rear of the vehicle, the system warns the opera-
tor with bright green, yellow and red signals. Both the radar
device and the camera(s) can be programmed and configured
through the monitor, with a five-zone detection radius adjust-
able from 6.5 to 65.5 feet. Anything that moves within this zone is shown on the monitor, prevent-
ing personal injury and material damage. Orlaco, 705-542 5931, www.orlaco.com. Booth 2578.
Monitor water levels
in industrial batteries
The i-Lite water monitor for industrial batteries pro-
vides LED light alerts for operators when it is time
to water the batteries. A solid green light means the
electrolyte level is okay; a solid red light means water
is needed. Should the red light be ignored, the sen-
sor can tell the operator how long the battery went
without water. Other features include a probe that can
be mounted in the center of the battery and an elec-
tronic housing kept separate from the sensor probe
for safety. To eliminate unrestricted current flow in any direction, the system includes multiple
fuses. Battery Watering Technologies, 877-522-5431, www.batterywatering.com. Booth 431

RFID-equipped lift trucks
To support a semi-automatic approach to reaching
destinations by lift truck, the suppliers warehouse
navigation system uses RFID transponders placed in
the facility floor at specific distances. The transponders
communicate with an RFID reader/writer in the lift
truck to identify aisle locations and distances. Armed
with this information, the lift trucks know where to go.
Increased productivity is achieved by having the truck select the optimum
combination of driving and lifting to reach a pallet position in the fast-
est, most efficient way. Because pallet lifting and put away is principally
controlled by the truck, not the driver, product damage is reduced.

Rack attachment aids in re protection
The heavy-duty FlueKeeper HD pallet rack attachment can
be easily installed to keep pallets and their loads out of
transverse flue spaces. Intended for use with hand-loaded
boxes, the attachment meets the 2012 International Fire
Code section stating that fire code officials can now require
rack storage installations to be equipped with approved
devices to protect the required flue spaces. The device
maintains open flue spaces within the racks to assist in acti-
vating ceiling sprinklers and delivering water to an in-rack

version of software that maximizes the efficiency
of each walk pass through the warehouse. The
softwares real location algorithm optimizes pick
routes by selecting order combinations based on

SAFETY TIPS
M
ore than half of factory workers who believe their
hearing to be good to excellent actually have suf-
fered hearing lossand dont even recognize it. These
findings came from a recent study conducted by Marjorie
McCullagh, PhD, RN, an associate professor at the University
of Michigan School of Nursing, and director of the univer-
sitys Occupational Health Nursing Program (www.nursing.
umich.edu).
McCullagh surveyed 2,691 noise-exposed automobile factory
workers. Initially, 76% reported excellent or good hearing, but
after formal audiogram hearing tests, her team found that
42% of those workers actually had measurable hearing loss.
This finding shows that even workers who are served by a
workplace hearing conservation program and receive annual
hearing testing may be unaware of their actual hearing ability,
McCullagh says. Most of the damage happens in the first 10
years of exposure. And, often people dont realize that its hap-
pening until they have suffered a fair amount of damage.
Blocking or reducing noise through ear protection has broad-
er physiological impact than just preserving hearing, she says.
Your whole body responds to noise; not just your ears.
Blood pressure, cortisone, stress levels and risks for cardiovascu-
lar events all go up, she explains. Noise-exposed workers are
also more prone to headaches, fatigue and risk of injury. Using
hearing protection reduces these risks.
But for ear protection to work, it has to be worn. McCullagh
offers three tips for warehouse managers to help them encour-
age compliance among their employees.
First, she says, encourage employees to be aware of the noise
level around them.
Sometimes people get used to the noise and try to ignore
it, or they think they need to just tough it out, she says.
However, if you have to raise your voice to be heard by some-
Now hear this: Hearing
protection important to
overall worker health
By Sara Pearson Specter, Editor at Large
The four most common hearing protection styles include
(from top) canal cap, pre-molded plugs with a rigid stem,
compressible foam plugs, and ear muffs.

one standing an arms length away from you, then its loud
enough that you should be protecting your ears.
Second, offer a selection of hearing protection options. One
size definitely does not fit all herehearing protection is more
personal than underwear, McCullagh asserts. People may
have to try several kinds to see what feels comfortable enough
that they will want to wear it.
The four most common styles include:
1. Compressible foam plugs. Theyre soft and
comfortable. You roll them between your fingers to
compress them, then you place them in the ear canal
where they expand to fit. But these are not always
appropriate for applications with intermittent noise,
McCullagh says. They can become irritating to the
ear canal if they are removed and inserted repeatedly.
2. Pre-molded plugs with a rigid
stem. These are particularly good for dirty
environments because your fingers only come
in contact with the stem, keeping the portion
that rests inside the ear canal clean, she says.
3. Ear muffs. Theyre old-school because they cover the
ear completely, and theyre very easy to fit,
she says. But if you have to wear eye glasses
or eye protection, then they wont work
because they cannot maintain a seal against
the head.
4. Canal cap. These are
small foam cushions that rest outside the ear
canal. They are attached to a very slim, semi-
flexiblesometimes jointedband that can be
worn multiple ways for comfort: over the head,
under the chin or behind the neck, she explains.
Theyre good for intermittent use because they
dont irritate the ear canal.
Finally, adds McCullagh, keep a selection of ear protection
wherever there is likely to be noise.
By keeping the ear protection devices right next to the
equipmentwhether its draped over the steering wheel of
a fork truck or in a box located next to processing machin-
erypeople will put it on if it is convenient, she says. But
nobody is going to walk back to the other end of a building
to retrieve their ear protection.
Abuse Resistant Belts work where others fail.
Super Strong J oints are virtually unbreakable.
High Tension Belts move heavier loads.
Super Red Belts double capacity.

The Hercules Green Lift Table utilizes high-

hydraulic fluid, a renewable resource and
non-toxic to the environment. The use of
food-grade grease in the re-greaseable bear-
ings is another lubricant that contributes to
its greenness.
By utilizing water based paint, this offers
excellent durability, quick drying time and
the emission of fewer odors. Also, VOC out-
put is eliminated in the drying process.
The high-efficiency motor uses an increased use of copper
and the number of windings lowers amperage draw, reducing
electricity consumption, and provides a longer service life due
to reduced heat output. MADE in the USA.
