About Diesel Care . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4
Common Rail - You hear that term these days
whenever diesel powered machines are
mentioned. Its certainly the most common
design of diesel injection system in the
market place today, and for good reason, its a
very good design. But how does it work?
In short, the principal of operation is
designed around the EFI (Electronic Fuel
Injection) systems that have been in use on
petrol engines for years. Fuel is supplied by a
pump to a single manifold (or rail) which
feeds all of the injectors (hence common
rail). The injectors are opened and closed by
electronic signals from the ECU (Electronic
Control Unit) to control how much fuel is
injected. The major difference between the
petrol EFI system and Diesel Common Rail
system is the pressure that the system
operates under. Petrol systems typically
operate at pressures less than 7 bar (100 psi),
whereas the Diesel CR system the pressure is
up around 1800 bar (26,000 psi), and the
pressure is increasing as the systems evolve.
The development
of the high
pressure
Common Rail
system has been
largely driven by
the ever
tightening grip of
emissions
standards. The CR
system has the
ability to control
the combustion process far more accurately
than earlier designs and this, together with
the extremely high injection pressures, are a
major factor in lowering exhaust emissions.
Improved combustion has also contributed
to better performance and economy.
A challenge for the Diesel Fuel Injection
industry in the past has been the repair of
these high tech Common Rail systems, i.e,
there was little or no repair available to the
aftermarket at all, only replacement with new.
Thankfully thats now changed. The situation
has been slowly improving over time but its
only in the last couple of years that specialist
equipment, spare parts, and training has
become available so that comprehensive,
manufacturer approved repair can be
performed. Even now, not all manufacturers
allow repair of the whole system in the
aftermarket service sector.
Diesel Care is committed to remaining
abreast of technology and for this reason we
have invested heavily in equipment and
training so that we can service the various
brands of CR systems that are in the market

Diesel Cares Tamworth Branch has
26 years of Dynamometer experience.
The Dyno has always been an
important part of diagnosing Diesel
engine faults and the trusty 2WD Dyno
we have had for all this time has served
us well, but we saw the need to
upgrade to a more modern unit.
In keeping with the ever changing vehicle
market, with features such as constant
4WD, traction control and ABS braking
systems, all integrated into the vehicle
electronic control system, diagnostics has
become a far more involved process.
So, for more accurate and quicker
diagnostics Diesel Care Tamworth has
recently installed a new Mainline 4WD
dynamometer. This unit is the latest
technology and incorporates many new
diagnostic features.
During a Dyno run we can log and store
not only the power and torque of the
vehicle but simultaneously log Turbo
boost pressure, Injection pump internal
pressure, Exhaust temperature, air/fuel
ratio, and duty cycle on a VNT
turbocharger control unit. From this we
can quickly identify an issue with our
customers vehicle. The Mainline 4WD
Dyno is capable of running all 4WD
vehicles, whether rear wheel drive, front
wheel drive or all wheel drive.
Although the Dyno can measure and log
information, theres more specialist tools
needed to complete the diagnosis suite.
We have specialist tools such as;
7heACSDsciIIoscope
This Scope is the most advanced and
sensitive available today. It features an
extremely fast capture rate that allows
unparalleled analysis of the wave forms of
any electronic circuit. The modern Diesel
engine incorporates a lot of sensors and
actuators, all which have an inuence on
how the electronic system works. These
sensors often operate in very ne voltage
ranges and switch very quickly therefore
requiring a very fast oscilloscope to
diagnose faults.
7heDensoDS7-2Diagnostic
scan tool Perfect for Toyota vehicles,
this tool allows the retrieval and clearance
of ECU fault codes, capture of live data,
coding of Denso Common Rail Injectors,
plus a host of other functions.

The Bosch KTS Diagnostic Scan Tool
A versatile and multipurpose tool for
test and diagnosis of a large range
of vehicles. Its particularly strong on
European vehicles.
7heLAUNCHDiagnosticScan7ooI
This tool will talk to practically any
vehicle ECU. It lls the gaps that the
previous two scan tools might leave.
Diesel Care has also invested in a whole
range of diagnostic equipment as
outlined here to help our technicians
get to the heart of the problem more
quickly therefore saving you, our
customer, money.

Branch was accepted into the well
known and respected network of ARB.
The origins of ARB go back to 1975, when
company founder, Tony Brown, was
inspired by a 4WDing trip through the
top end of Australia. Back then, 4WDers
relied on homemade or ill tting
equipment that was not designed for
extensive Outback expeditions. Endless
corrugated roads, extreme temperatures,
and the heavy loads carried by Australian
travelers were extremely punishing on
vehicles that regularly tackled these
kinds of conditions.
Tonys many years spent toiling on his
Series 1 Land Rover proved extremely
benecial to others in the top end during
his travels. Damaged bull bars and
broken roof racks ensured Tonys
expertise was regularly called on, and
through this experience an idea was
born high quality, durable equipment
that would meet the vigorous demands
of 4WD owners.
Upon his return to Melbourne, Tony put
theory into practice, and began working
in the family garage to address some of
the product deciencies hed
encountered on his trip. It was exactly
what Australian 4WDers had been
waiting for, and ARB, the initials of
Anthony Ronald Brown, was founded.
Today, ARB is Australias largest
manufacturer and distributor of 4x4
accessories. ARBs philosophy has never
wavered from its original course quality,
reliability and practicality above all else.
Diesel Care Goondiwindi, trading as
Goondiwindi 4X4 Accessories, stocks an
extensive range of ARB products;
Winches, Lights, Air Compressors, Shocks
and Suspension, Dual Battery Systems,
Storage Solutions, Long Range Fuel
Tanks, Seat covers, Bull Bars, Tow Bars,
Recovery Gear... the list goes on and on
Its fair to say; for 4WD vehicle
accessories, Bull Bar to Tow Bar,
Goondiwindi 4X4 Accessories has the lot.

The reality is; all diesel fuel is not created
equal. Poor quality fuel can cause
performance issues, premature wear,
gumming of components, and
blocked lters. Contaminated fuel is also a
major cause of problems for fuel injection
equipment, and water is without doubt the
most common form. So how, I hear you ask,
do I safeguard against costly repairs caused
by poor quality or contaminated fuel?
The commandments:
Buy your diesel from a reputable,
known source rather than shopping for
the lowest price.
whenyouarenottravellingawayfrom
home, make it a rule to fuel up at the
same location every time. That way, if the
black hand of fate touches you and you
get a tank of bad fuel, you will at least
have a better idea of where it came from.
Replace fuel lters regularly, dont wait
until a light on the dash reminds you, by
then its too late. Perhaps consider
installing an additional lter/water trap
assembly to your machine or vehicle.
Drain the water trap/sedimenter if on
your vehicle, its of the type that is
separate to the fuel lter assembly.
Never, never, NEVER use empty
chemical drums to store or transport
diesel. Herbicide; deadly to weeds and
fuel injection systems alike.
If you have bulk storage, be sure to
drain off water from the low point at
regular intervals. Condensation occurs in
any fuel tank and accumulates at the
lowest point as water. If allowed to
accumulate this water can end up in the
fuel injection system causing serious
damage, or can promote the growth of
algae in the bulk tank itself, and once
established algae can thrive in the diesel.
Clean, clean, clean: Fuel cannot be
too clean. It should be ltered at every
movement; Bulk tank to fuel trailer, fuel
trailer to tractor tank, tractor tank to
injection system. Go overboard!
Filters are cheap insurance.
UseaquaIityfueIadditive to improve
lubricity and protect against gumming
and algae. A good one is outlined below.
American manufacturer STANADYNE
(formerly Roosa Master) has been
manufacturing diesel injection pumps
and injectors for many years, but did you
know that they also make high quality
fuel lter assemblies and fuel
additives too?
The additives have not always been
available in Australia, mainly due to
complications in shipping of these goods,
but now they are available here and they
are excellent!
Stanadyne fuel additives are the
only ones that are:

The 24 Hours of Le Mans (24 heures du
Mans) is the worlds oldest sports car
endurance race and one of the most
famous and inuential in
motorsports history.
The race started in 1923 and has been run
every year since its inception with the
exception of 1936, where the race was not
run due to worker strikes, and 1940 to 1948,
due to World War II.
For the past four years the race has been
won by Diesel Powered cars; 2007 and 2008
by Audi with its R10 TDI, in 2008 by Audis
R15 TDI, and in 2009 by a Peugeot 908 HDi
FAP. The Peugeot completed 382 laps, 5206
kms, at an average speed of 216.93 km/h.
Among the three drivers of the winning
Peugeot was David BRABHAM , youngest
son of Australian racing legend
Sir Jack Brabham.
The Peugeot 908 HDi FAP is a sports
prototype racing car built by the French
automobile manufacturer to compete in
the race, starting in 2007 and eventually
winning in 2009. This effort, in development
since 2005, was publicly unveiled in June
2006. It rst competed against the Audi R10
TDI, becoming the second diesel engined
sports car from a major manufacturer, and
then against the Audi R15 TDI. This was
Peugeots rst Le Mans effort since the end
of the Peugeot 905 project in 1993.
The Peugeot 908 is powered by a twin
turbocharged, 5.5 L (340 cu in) HDi diesel
engine, the maximum size allowed by Le
Mans Prototype rules. Its conguration is a
100 V12, the angle having been chosen to
lower the center of gravity. Its output has
been revealed to be over 730 horsepower
(540 kW) and 1,200 Nm (890 ft-lb)
of torque.
Engine management systems for the 908
were developed by Bosch, who also
developed the fuel injection system. Oil
systems are developed by technical partner
Total. The electro-pneumatic controlled
gearbox, designed and built by Ricardo is
longitudinal with a maximum of 6 gear
ratios, and the differential is self-locking.
The Le Mans success of Audi and Peugeot
using their highly developed diesel engines
clearly conrms the performance and
reliability of diesel power in todays world.
Of course, the technology developed on
the race track ows down to production
cars and this is why we enjoy such quiet,
powerful, economical, and reliable diesel
vehicles on the open road.
