DRAFTING MANUAL
DoD Engineering Drawing Format
1.0 General
This section, along with Section 3.1 (inch), and 3.2 (metric) Drawing Size and Format, is based on ASME Y14.1 and ASME Y14.1M Drawing Sheet Size and Format, with emphasis on Department of Defense (DoD) added requirements in accordance with the Acquisition Reform Policy Memo 98-2 Waivers for the Use of Specifications and Standards. 1.1 Technical Document Format For documents being prepared by or for the DoD, the Distribution Statements and Security Classifications With Notations shall be part of the Technical Document Format. 1.2 Microfilming and Digital Backup Microfilming is generally no longer done because the Computer-Aided Design (CAD) files are digital. These digital files must be in a format capable of being retrieved during the life cycle of the product. 1.2.1 Digital Drawing Data Files Backup Digital Data Files of CAD drawings must be available for the life of the product. DoD requires all Drawing Repositories to electronically store their engineering drawings and related data in Joint Engineering Drawings Management Information Control System (JEDMICS). The JEDMICS C4 format is a Continuous Acquisition and Life-Cycle Support (CALS) Raster Type 4, and JEDMICS is an automation of DoDs engineering data repositories and technical data libraries using optical disk technology to permanently capture, store, retrieve, control manage, distribute in a standard digital format, and ensure the integrity of engineering data. Raster engineering drawing data files shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-1840. For detailed information of CAD files and their conversions, go to www.trixsystems.com. 1.2.1.1 CAD File Identifiers The CAD file name should be placed on the drawing. The design activity can determine the location. 1.3 Document Dating The dating of a document shall be expressed numerically in year, month, and day format (05-11-25). It is the original date or baseline for historical purposes. The original date shall be retained on redrawn drawings having the same number and on all sheets of a multi-sheet drawing, except for sheets added by a later revision.

Metric Sheet Size and Format
1.0 General
This section is in accordance with ASME Y14.1M Metric Drawing Sheet Size and Format. See Section 3.0 of this Manual for DoD format requirements, and Section 3.1 for decimal inch drawing sheet sizes. All units in this section are in millimeters. 1.1 Microfilming and Digital Backup Microfilming is generally no longer used due to the Computer Aided Design (CAD) files being digital. These digital files must be of a format capable of being retrieved during the life cycle of the product. 1.2 CAD File Identifiers The CAD file name should be placed on the drawing in a location designated by the design department. 1.3 Document Dating A typical method of dating a document is year, month, and day (05-11-25). The original date shall be retained on redrawn drawings with the same number on all sheets of a multi-sheet drawing. The exception is that when a revision adds another sheet, a new date shall be used.
3.0 Definitions
3.1 Basic Sheet Sizes Basic metric sheet sizes are designated by a two-character code. The letter A is always the first character. A number ranging from zero (0) to four (4) is the second character. The number four (4) designates the smallest sheet size in horizontal or vertical format. Each sheet size is twice the area of the previous size. H = Height, L = length A4 (vertical) A4 (horizontal) A3 A2 A1 A0 297 H x 210L 210H x 297L 297H x 420L 420H x 594L 594H x 841L 841H x 1189L
DRAFTING MANUAL
Metric Sheet Size and Format
3.2 Elongated Sheets Sizes Elongated sheet sizes are designated by a four-character code. The first two characters are the basic sheet size designation. The last two characters are an X and a number. The X indicates that the number in the fourth position is a multiplier. The length of an elongated sheet can be determined by multiplying the shorter sides of the basic sheet dimension by the number following the X. e.g. the vertical A4 size is 297 high by 210 wide. 210 the shorter dimension is multiplied by 3 to get an elongated width of 630 for an A4X3 size. H = Height, L = length A4X3 A4X4 A4X5 A3X3 A3X4 297H x 630L 297H x 841L 297H x 1051L 420H x 891L 420H x 1189L
3.3 Extra-Elongated Sheet Sizes Extra-elongated metric sheet sizes are designated in the same manner as elongated sheets. They are separated into a separate category because of their extra long lengths. H = Height, L = length A4X6 A4X7 A4X8 A4X9 A3X5 A3X6 A3X7 A2X3 A2X4 A2X5 A1X3 A1X4 A0X2 A0X3 297H x 1261L 297H x 1471L 297H x 1682L 297H x 1892L 420H x 1486L 420H x 1783L 420H x 2080L 594H x 1261L 594H x 1682L 594H x 2102L 841H x 1783L 841H x 2378L 1189H x 1682L 1189H x 2523L
3.4 Drawing Materials Drawing material may be of the following: 3.4.1 Paper No required specification. 3.4.2 Plastic Sheet Masters L-P-519, Type I or LL, Class 2 (.003 or .004 thick).
DRAFTING MANUAL
Metric Sheet Size and Format
3.4.3 Printed Circuit Board Masters MIL-PRF-5480, Class 3 per L-P-519, Type I or II, Class 1 (.007 thick). 3.5 Drawing Size Letters - Letters used to describe standard format sizes. 3.6 Flat Size A drawing size that is typically stored in a flat file or a hanging fixture. 3.7 Multi-sheet Drawing A drawing having more than one sheet. 3.8 Protective Margins A 50mm or more length added to each end of a roll size drawing to protect the drawing when handled and stored. 3.8 Roll Size A drawing size that is typically stored in a rolled-up condition due to its size and length.

5.3 General Notes General notes are shown on the left or right side of the drawing. If the drawing general notes are abundant, they may be extended towards the middle of the drawing, or they may be placed on the second sheet. 5.4 Parts List The parts list, if applicable, is shown above the title block. If the parts list is abundant, it may be extended directly to the left and, if needed, it may be placed on the second sheet. If the drawing has a separate parts list, a note SEE SEPARATE PARTS LIST PL123456-1 is added above the title block.
6.0 Title Block, Supplementary Data Block, and 3rd Angle Projection Block
The title block size dimensions are for guidance only. The supplementary data block, if required, is added to the left of the title block. The 3rd angle projection block may be added to the left of the title block or to the left of the supplementary data block. United States metric drawings shall used 3rd angle projection. 6.1 Title Block Size for A2, A3, and A4 Size Drawings See Figure 1. 6.2 Title Block Size for A0, and A1 Size Drawings See Figure 2.

Drawing Copy Fold Information
Update 59 1.0 GENERAL 1.1 To facilitate folding, the original tracing should indicate fold marks in the margin of the standard cut sheet sizes, except A size. However, if copies will be folded mechanically, i.e., by folding machines, fold marks are not necessary except for the vertical folds if the machines do not have that capability. 2.0 BASIS OF FOLD MARKS 2.1 The easiest kind of fold is the fan fold. The advantage of fan folding is that the print is more easily handled on the shop floor and in the field. Fold marks are usually indicated in the horizontal margins of the drawing form in increments of 8.5 inches and in the vertical margin in
increments of 11.0 inches to the extent consistent with the display of the drawing number in the file. Figure 1 illustrates the method of folding all standard cut sheet sizes. Extended sizes should also be folded in similar fashion. 2.2 Extended sizes should have fold marks shown in the same increments as cut sheet sizes. 2.3 The fold mark designation that should be observed for all cut sheet sizes and extended sizes is shown in Section K3.1. 3.0 REDUCED-SIZE COPIES 3.1 If reduced-size prints are normally produced, the practice shown in Figure 1 should also be observed.
