in meaningful democracy,” he

campaign and said such private
sector initiatives have the power
to reach out to voters and en-
courage them to exercise their
franchise.
On the issue of the ‘No Vote’
No Vote option, saying, “It would
put moral pressure on political
parties to field ‘efficient’ candi-
dates (as many parties have nom-
inated contestants with criminal
charges against them) and also
the parties would be forced to
rethink their policies, focus on
developments, which will boost
the functioning of the democra-
cy.” He also admitted that there
are certain deficiencies on the
part of Election Commission,
which have resulted in bogus
names being included in the vot-
ers’ list and people left out of the
electoral rolls and said appro-
priate steps will be taken to plug
these loopholes so that high tur-
nout could be achieved.

Chief Election Commissioner of
India, said the EC has a mam-
moth task to perform during polls
and employed 5 million people
for poll duty. “I was sent to Pakis-
tan as an election observer and
India is absolutely great and the
way elections were conducted in

this 33-year-old owns 152 t-
shirts, the recent addition being
HBO’s.
The techie says he can still re-
member the day he wore the
Budweiser t-shirt the first time. “I
enjoyed the attention I received
when I wore the brewing compa-
ny’s t-shirt. I became the star of
the day. So I started hunting for
more such t- shirts.”
Rathnam is the proud owner of
the official t-shirts of Macro-
media, STAR Sports, Chicago
Bulls, Microsoft, Yahoo!, Bacardi,
Bosch, HBO, Pooh, Singapore
Airlines, Master Card, Volkswa-
gen, Red Hat, 2006 FIFA World

others. And he has a story behind
each of them.
“Once I went for a seminar at
Taj Coromandel and by chance

Will 2009 be a year of
bonds and investments
in bonds?
W
ith the kind of negative sen-
timents seen across the
global financial markets it
looks like there is a silver
lining in the clouds. Investors are
keenly looking at the bond market as
the investment category to bet on in
2009-10. So, is it the good bet for you
too? In all probability it could be.
Under the assumption that interest
rates are going to go down it seems
that bonds will rule the roost as a
preferred investment vehicle for the
coming year.
Bonds for dummies
A bond is a debt instrument issued
by a company to raise capital for the
business. In simple terms the com-
pany borrows money from you (the
investor) and promises to pay you an
interest (annually or semi-annually)
as well as the principal at the end of
the pre-decided period. The interest
is called coupon and the date when
the principal is repaid is called ma-
turity date.
How does it give me the edge?
Bonds have an inverse relationship
to interest rates. i.e. when interest
rates go up the bond investor tends
to lose and when interest rates go

$100 million dreams
Google Inc is forming a $100 million fund to invest in
early-stage start-up firms. The fund, to be called Google
Ventures, will be wholly owned by Google, but will
operate as a separate entity and will seek investment
opportunities to maximise returns rather than looking

vision.

software that Google acquired in 2005, and Bill Maris are
the fund’s two managing partners.

Recession hits Disney

T
he US economic downturn has
begun to take its toll on the en-
tertainment industry, with gi-
ant Walt Disney Co. axing 1,900
jobs from its theme parks in Cali-
fornia and Florida.
According to reports, the compa-
ny’s Walt Disney World in Orlando,
which is the world’s most visited
recreational resort, has eliminated
1,400 jobs.
The original Disneyland Resort in
Anaheim, California, will also axe
300 positions.
The rest of the jobs are being elim-
inated at the company’s corporate
headquarters at Burbank near here,
reports said.
Disney employs about 80,000 peo-
ple in its parks and resorts, which
account for a quarter of its total
business and revenue.
According to the Los Angeles
Times, Disney is bracing for an ex-
tended downturn as people skip
theme parks to save money.
“The recession, and the recent de-
cline, has really hit the theme park
industry, but it has hit the destina-
tion parks more than the regional
parks,” the newspaper quoted Ed-
ward Shaw, an associate with travel
industry consultant Economics Re-
search Associates, as saying.
“People are staying closer to
home,” added Shah.
The entertainment giant’s spraw-
ling 25,000-acre Walt Disney World
in Orlando has been particularly
hard-hit by the recession, the report

According to it, traffic to Orlando

disseminated to all?
“I’m fully aware about the In-
ternet penetration in India, but
that’s least of our problem, as
long as the demand for informa-
tion exists it will reach the con-
cerned people one way or the
other. During last year’s As-

on policy changes, but can’t per-
suade people to vote, because
half the Indian population can’t
read English and they are the
people who go and vote, not the
elite or English-speaking section
of our society. What we need is
the help of local language new-
spapers, who can take it to the
voters who matter.

with other social
networking websites?
We are planning to promote
our website via Orkut, Facebook,
where youngsters meet and net-
work with their friends. They can
spread the information and it
will surely result in more young-
sters thronging the polling
booths. We have also included
links of several civil society orga-
nisations, who are also working
for the same cause – encourag-
ing people to vote; also we are
trying to include web links of
politicians, who already have
their blogs or websites. We have
provided the information in a
well-packaged manner, so that
everyone can benefit from that.
Do you think this website
help securing a bigger voter
turn out?
The website as such cannot
lead to high voter turn out, but
we can convince the public, po-
litical parties that voting mat-
ters. Every one should go out
and vote, by not voting we are
committing disservice to our
country. “Democracy may not
be perfect, there may be deficit
in electoral rolls, booth-captur-
ing may occur during polls, but
we have to elect our representa-
tive in a representative democra-
cy, otherwise we are
undermining our democracy.” ■
