The Royal African Society is Britain's prime Africa organisation. We are a membership society that fosters a better understanding of Africa in the UK and throughout the world. Our goal is to promote Africa globally in the spheres of business, politics, academia, arts and culture. We disseminate knowledge and insight to make a positive difference to Africas development and celebrate the diversity and depth of African cultures. Our in-depth knowledge of the continent and our collaborative approach to programmes make us the first choice for anyone who wants to engage, understand, celebrate or simply learn more about Africa. The RAS has organized three African film festivals since 2008. The first festival was held in 2008 screening 40 African films at five London cinemas followed by Film Africa 2011 with 50 films with last years festival Film Africa 2012 with 70 films showing at six London cinemas. Film Africa, now an annual event held over ten days in November, has become the largest African Film Festival in the UK and one of the largest in Europe and the world, and is key to mainstreaming African cinema and transforming the way people view Africa. Film Africa Curator post The RAS wishes to recruit a Curator for Film Africa 2013, with a track record of successful curation of African film and festivals, to set and implement the creative vision for the festival programme. The Curator will need to be based in London. The Curator will work closely with the Programming Committee to develop a strong and diverse programme of the best contemporary African films and with the RAS team to devise the schedule for the festival. S/he will negotiate the rights of

screenings with filmmakers/distributors and will select the filmmakers to be invited to the festival. The Curator will need to oversee the translation of the programme into key messages delivered through press, marketing and social media. S/he will be expected to write editorials about the festival for the press, and conduct television, radio and other interviews. At all times, s/he should make sure that the publicity surrounding the festival best reflects the ethos of the programme. As the public face of the festival, the Curator will also need to be available throughout October and during the festival to do press interviews, to open the different elements of the festival with speeches, and to lead the most high-profile Q&As. S/he will also be expected to spend time with the guests of the festival, attending all of the filmmakers dinners and other social events.
