Service Log #3 Shaniekiwa Lester Ivy Tech Community College

2 Running Head: LESTER INTASC Standard, Description, and Rationale Standard #4: Content Knowledge The teacher understands the central concepts: tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and be meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content. Name of Artifact: Service learning Date: April 21, 2013 Course: Education 101 Brief description For standard, content knowledge, I used for my assignment by observing in my classroom the teacher didnt allow bad behavior. Mrs. OConnor quickly makes the student correct their behavior by switching their colors. Rationale During my last hours at Brookside Elementary I noticed it was really coming to an end at our site, I wouldnt be working with the kindergartners anymore. While I was here I picked up that I had to be stern with the students otherwise they would walk over me as a teacher. Mrs. OConnor made it clear that the students had to know who the teacher was and who the student was and things went the way the teacher said it was to be.

3 Running Head: LESTER Introduction During my service learning I learned so much. The school coming in was very welcoming. The community that the school is located in seemed busy with lots of traffic, but once turned into the lot the school seemed to be almost hidden. The classroom upon entering was big and bright colored. The classroom with filled with many students of various races and sizes. My teacher, Mrs. OConnor, from my first impression of her was she was a young teacher. Also she had so much control over her classroom. I worked with the students my first day in the class. The students were so excited to work with a new teaching figure. They began telling me things about their life from how many brothers and sisters they had to what they had for dinner the previous night. Relate Service Learning Experience to the Classroom In the textbook with talked about students with disabilities, when I first decided I wanted to pursue education I wanted to work with disabled children, I changed my mind to working with elementary student. At my learning site I worked with kindergarteners and one of the students had autism. Though she had to be taught different she was still in a normal classroom with her fellow classmates and didnt seem to feel out of place. She interacted with the other students, as a matter of fact I didnt even know she had autism until I had to quiz all of the students and my teacher had to instruct me on how to quiz her differently. Also in class we talked about the technology used to teach, though the students I worked with were only in kindergarten they were using much technology. They were using some type of smart pad to do their counting and activities on the board. They also had five laptops in the back of the room that they would have a group time and five students would go to the laptops and do their learning off the computer. Personal Reflections From a teaching standpoint the students I worked with were extremely hyper no matter

4 Running Head: LESTER what time of the day I came in. though the students were hyper they were also eager to learn, and from a teaching standpoint thats the part of the job that would make it all worth it. Also while there at my site, I watched as Mrs. OConnor took control of her classroom thats the type of hold I want to have on my future students. The students respected Mrs. OConnor and all the other adults that walked into the classroom. Future Teacher The benefits of becoming a teacher would be that I would be able to have impact on our future doctors, teachers, lawyers, gymnast, to our local news anchor. Also I would be able to see the light bulb go off in students heads as they learn something new every day. Another benefit I would receive would be that Im able to interact with the students and the families. I would benefit in getting to know my students, what their likes and dislikes are: what would be the best way that they learn. This experience will be beneficial to me by giving me more experience with children than I already had previously from working with the YMCA. Summary/Recommendations I dont believe there was anything to improve on from my service learning site. Everything about my site was welcoming also very helpful to let my see if it was a field I wished to continue pursuing. It was a pleasure that Brookside elementary allowed us students to come in and participate in the help of aid the students and teachers with the students education. The only thing I would have improved on is that I wished we didnt have the two week spring break in between our hours. I plan to still attend to the site even though our site learning is over.
