After coldly rejecting her at first, he gradually accepts her in his life and decides to quit his cruel job and seek a decent, redemptive life. Sometimes, theres a man, well, hes the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And thats The Dude. Theres no one quite like him, and were giving you the chance to abide with The Dude (Jeff Bridges) at THE BIG LEBOWSKI Quote-Along. Weve subtitled all of your favorite lines so you can use the preferred nomenclature, and well be handing out inflatable bats so you can show Larry what happens when you f*ck a stranger up the ass. Stand against aggression with The Dude, yell, Over the line! with Walter (John Goodman) and definitely do not f*ck with the Jesus (John Turturro). You can even enjoy The Dudes favorite recreation (no, not weed) with a giant-sized bowling game on stage before the show. But dont worry, you wont be required to roll on Shabbos. We hope all of you Little Lebowski Urban Achievers will come out and enjoy yourselves, so you can die with a smile on your face, without feelin like the good Lord gypped you.

THE ACTION PACK

ANCHORMAN Quote-Along Dir. Adam McKay, 2004, PG-13, 94 min RZ 5/2, 9, 16, 23 : LC 5/7 : SR 5/8
Ron Burgundy loves scotch. Brick Tamland loves lamp. Champ Kind loves fun. These are the men of the Channel 4 News Team and theyre here to deliver... the news. If youre a man whos never been to an ANCHORMAN Quote-Along, youve missed out on one of the most quoteable, drink-able, enjoyable nights of your life. And if youre a woman whos never been to the ANCHORMAN Quote-Along, I encourage you to dress like a man and try your luck at getting in...it is AnchorMAN, not AnchorLADY. And that is a scientific fact. As always we will have all of your favorite lines subtitled for you to belt out, as well as mustaches for all and a yazz flute for you to play along with Ron during his melodically intense seduction of Veronica Corningstone. Prepare yourself for a hilarious and insanely ridiculous ride to Pleasure Town.

TEENAGE DREAMS: THE POP PRINCESS Sing-Along RZ 5/9, 5/16, 5/23 : LC 5/20 : SR 5/21 : VL 5/22
We just celebrated Boy Bands in our last Sing-Along, so its the perfect time to look at their XX (chromosomed) counterparts the pop princesses! While JT was hanging out with Joey and Lance, Britney and Christina were busy getting started on their solo careers early. The massive success of Hit Me Baby (One More Time) and all of Christinas pre-Dirty hits ushered in a new era of younger divas with huge voices, choreographed dances, and a girl power attitude that took what the Spice Girls had started in the 90s and cranked it up to make the take no prisoners anthems of the 00s, with everything from Since U Been Gone to Before He Cheats competing to be the top song love sick teenagers could listen to on repeat while screaming along on their drive to school in the morning. This month the Action Pack is bringing together all of these ladies into one super group of pop music ambition and excellence with TEENAGE DREAMS: THE POP PRINCESS SINGALONG. Well have your Britney, your Avril, some Madonna, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and, of course, we will have NO Hollaback Girls, because this sh*t is bananas B-A-N-A-N-A-S. (Henri Mazza)

THREE AMIGOS! Quote-Along Dir. John Landis, 1986, PG, 104 min VL 5/5 : LC 5/5 : SR 5/5
How does one celebrate Cinco de Mayo properly? By marveling at three out of work white actors stumbling ignorantly through a small town in Mexico, of course! These three amigos are down on their luck and up to their necks in senoritas, margaritas, banditos and bullets. As Ned, Lucky Day and Dusty Bottoms attempt to act their way out of a serious situation, you can play along with a plethora of props, a delicious taco special menu and all of your favorite lines subtitled. So throw on your best mariachi outfit, prepare your singing voice for My Little Buttercup and practice your bird calls, because wherever there is injustice, you will find us. Wherever there is suffering, well be there. Wherever you see tacos, eat them. And wherever liberty is threatened, you will find... THE THREE AMIGOS!

The JIGGY CRUNK Sing-Along RZ 5/30

Unh double up unh unh! Oh snap, kids, its time to get jiggy with the Action Pack again at the 2013 edition of the JIGGY CRUNK SING-ALONG. What does gettin jiggy actually mean? We have no idea. Maybe something about holding your arms at your waist and moving them in circles like youre one of Will Smiths backup dancers? Thats definitely allowed at this show, as long as youre also getting crunk. This time around every rap video in the party is coming straight outta the 90s, the decade that gave us Vanilla Ice, The Humpty Dance, and Snoop Dogg, so get ready to mount up with the Regulators and wave your hands side to side in the air along with Naughty by Nature while we sing out Hip Hop Hooray ho hey ho And remember: Mo Money = Mo Problems. See you at tha crossroads.

FOOD & FILM

SO MUCH MORE THAN DINNER AND A MOVIE.

Cinema Cocktails: ON THE TOWN

Cinema Cocktails: ON THE TOWN Dir. Gene Kelly & Stanley Donen, 1949, NR, 98 min, 35mm RZ 5/5
Gabey (Gene Kelly), Chip (Frank Sinatra), and Ozzie (Jules Munshin) are three sailors on a 24-hour shore leave in New York City. They have one simple plan: find some fun, maybe some romance, and definitely some drinks before their leave is up. Gabey instantly falls head over heels for a subway photo of Miss Turnstiles and sets himself on a mission with his friends (and some amorous ladies) to find her at any cost. Kelly co-directed this film with Stanley Donen, and it oozes with Kellys signature charm. Theres overly elaborate fantasy dance routines and catchy songs that will leave you humming long after youve left the theater. But theres more than that, something else at the films core: an overabundance of heart. These three sailors only know these gals for 24 hours, but youd be hardpressed to doubt any one of their connections. Theres definitely an earnestness at play that speaks volumes to the enchanting chemistry of the six leads. So, get ready to fall in love all over again, and, if youre not ready, well have Bill Norris on hand crafting some custom-concocted liquid courage for you to fully enjoy Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly painting the town red, white, and blue in ON THE TOWN. (Greg MacLennan)

Mothers Day Brunch Feast: THE SOUND OF MUSIC Dir Robert Wise, 1965, G, 174 min SR 5/12
How do you solve a problem like Mothers Day? You want your mom to feel special, but all of the usual gifts just wont cut it. Well, say so long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, adieu to this problem, because weve got you covered with our Mothers Day Brunch screening of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. This classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical features all of your moms favorite things, including gorgeous scenery, adorable children, wonderful songs and a swoon-worthy romance. With five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, THE SOUND OF MUSIC remains a soaring, inspiring film that everyone can enjoy, whether youre sixteen going on seventeen or sixteen going on sixty. Plus, watching Maria (the luminous Julie Andrews) wrangle seven children will certainly give you a new appreciation for your mother. Well be offering a special brunch menu to accompany the film, but even if your mouth is full, feel free to sing and yodel along. So slip on your best curtain ensemble and treat your mother to a cinematic trip to Salzburg, where the hills are alive with the sound of Mothers Day celebration. (Sarah Pitre)

Mothers Day Brunch Feast: MERMAIDS Dir Richard Benjamin, 1990, PG-13, 110 min VL 5/12
Maybe you and your mom dont always get along. Maybe shes a little unconventional, or maybe she doesnt act the way you think she should. But at the end of the day, you love each other, and thats really what matters. No film exemplifies this message more perfectly and compellingly than MERMAIDS, and weve built an entire brunch feast around this cinematic gem so you can treat your own quirky mom to a fabulous Mothers Day. Set in 1963 small town Massachusetts, the story follows conservative teenager Charlotte (Winona Ryder) and her volatile relationship with her unorthodox mother, Mrs. Flax (Cher). As these two dynamic characters learn to appreciate their differences, youll savor both the eccentric charm of this film and our delicious special menu, which far exceeds Mrs. Flaxs cooking skills. Add Bob Hoskins, Christina Ricci, Michael Schoeffling (swoon!) and mimosas to the mix, and youve got the perfect Mothers Day Out. MERMAIDS will make you laugh, and it might even make you cry, but most importantly, its guaranteed to make you appreciate your mom, whether shes normal or not. (Sarah Pitre)

THE GREAT GATSBY Feast Dir. Baz Lurhmann, 2013, PG-13 LC 5/14 : SR 5/15
Baz Lurhmanns cinematic repertoire consists of bold visions and exciting imagination. Hes audaciously tackled the likes of Shakespeare (ROMEO + JULIET) and the Hollywood musical (MOULIN ROUGE!). AUSTINS OWN AWARD-WINNING MOVIE MOCKING MAESTROS. FEATURING SLACKER WISECRACKER JOHN ERLER AND HIS PARTNER JOE PARSONS.

STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN

MYSTERY PREVIEW VL 5/21

We cant tell you what well be mocking, but for the ridiculous price of $3, how can you resist? Weve written a lot of jokes for it, but were going to be improvising a lot too. We need you to help us test out the material. Cant tell you what the title is, but we can tell you its a preview of an upcoming mock, so dont worry if you miss this preview, because... itll be back. See you Monday! (John)

TWILIGHT: BREAKING DAWN - PART I Dir. Bill Condon, 2011, PG-13 LC 5/3 & 5/4 : RZ 5/10, 11, 17, 18
This month Master Pancake takes on the FOURTH installment of the Twilight Saga: BREAKING DAWN, Part 1 (2011). Weve gleefully mocked the first three TWILIGHT movies, but this time around its going to be tough, due to the fact that BREAKING DAWN part 1 is actually a surprisingly good movie. JUST KIDDING: BDp1 is the most jaw-droppingly ridiculous installment of the series. It features a Vampire wedding, a Brazilian honeymoon (with lots of what teenagers love to do on their Brazilian honeymoon: PLAY CHESS), a mixed-species pregnancy, and a crazy-ass demon birth. In addition it introduces the mind-boggling concept of imprinting (pro-tip: dont let Jacob anywhere near your baby) and one of the worst babynaming decisions ever (spoiler: Renesmee). Join us this April/May as the hecklers of Master Pancake -- John Erler, David Jara, Andrew Rosas-- answer the question: whats eating Bella Swan (hint: Renesmee). (John)

STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN Dir. Nicholas Meyer, 1982, PG RZ 5/24, 5/25, 5/31, 6/1, 6/8 : LC 6/7
We at Master Pancake are big fans of STAR TREK II: WRATH OF KHAN (1982). Weve been waiting a long time for a chance to mock Spock, irk Kirk, and deforest Kelly, so our jokes will be coming from a place of nerd love. WRATH OF KHAN features one of the best movie baddies: Ricardo Montalban as Khan, the titular villain whose hatred of Kirk is matched only by the amount of man-cleavage he reveals under his space-cardigan; when we say Khan is the titular villain of the movie, were not kidding. The center of the movie is the fight between Khan and Kirk to prove who can act more: the guy with the mullet or the guy with the hairpiece. We dont want to reveal the twist at the end but lets just say George Takei isnt what he appears to be. Joining the crew for WRATH OF KHAN is audience favorite Owen Egerton who brings his considerable over-acting skills to bear. (John)

JAMES BROWN LIVE AT BOSTON GARDEN 1968

JAMES BROWN LIVE AT BOSTON GARDEN 1968 RZ 5/6
Less than 24 hours after Martin Luther Kings assassination the city of Boston was in a state of turmoil. When James Brown arrived at the airport to play his already scheduled show he was warned that the mayor, fearing further unrest among the African American community, planned to cancel the show. Not only did the show go on at Browns insistence, but public television station WGBH broadcast the whole thing. Its an incredible historical document and a fantastic performance by James Brown, who dedicated the show to Dr. Kings memory and brought the raw emotions within himself and his community to a searing head.

A MIGHTY WIND Dir. Christopher Guest, 2003, PG-13, 91 min RZ 5/13

There was abuse in my family, but it was mostly musical in nature. With three features (WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, BEST IN SHOW and A MIGHTY WIND) Christopher Guest and collaborator Eugene Levy didnt invent the mockumentary genre, but they perfected it. Now this style of filmmaking has found its way into horror films and studio comedies and even broadcast sitcoms. Yet no one has utilized its strengths better than Guest. His films have a sort of gonzo realism to them. On one hand they house over-the-top characters put into contrived situations. On the other, though, the documentary style filmmaking and Guests own subtle dramatic touch lets the viewer feel empathy and sympathy for these crazy goofballs as if they are real people. The best example of this tightrope act is A MIGHTY WIND. The film delivers a brilliantly satirical look at folk music in all its ruminations. Along the way we get a fake history of three stereotypical folk groups coupled with more personal back stories of each. The films biting wit and amazing comedic performances marry effectively with the drama unfolding underneath. Oh, and all the songs are pretty damn great. Part comedy, part tragedy, part musical: A MIGHTY WIND is Guest and company at their very best. (R.J. LaForce)

THE SOURCE FAMILY Dirs. Maria Demopoulos & Jodi Wille, 2012, R, 98 min RZ 5/19 & 5/20
The Source Family was a radical experiment in 1970s utopian living. Their outlandish style, popular health food restaurant, rock band, and beautiful women made them the darlings of Hollywoods Sunset Strip. But their outsider ideals and the unconventional behavior of their spiritual leader, Father Yod, caused controversy with local authorities. They fled to Hawaii, leading to their dramatic demise. THE SOURCE FAMILY provides an intimate, insiders view at this incredible group of people through their own archival photos, home movies, audio recordings, and contemporary interviews with members of the family. Serving as a highly personal, insiders guide to the counter-culture movement of the early 1970s, the film is inspired by the cult-classic book THE SOURCE: THE STORY OF FATHER YOD, YA HO WA 13, AND THE SOURCE FAMILY, which was written by Isis Aquarian and Electricity Aquarian and edited by director Jodi Wille.

THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN

THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN Dir. Charles B. Pierce, 1976, R, 86 min, 35mm RZ 5/7
This movie is for people who enjoy things that are good. THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN is part pseudo-documentary, part slasher, and all awesome. It reinterprets the story of The Texarkana Phantom, an iconic and terrifying killer who plagued the small town of Texarkana in the 1940s. The Phantom breaks down doors with his arms. He wears a canvas sack over his head, way before Jason Voorhees did it in FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2. The Phantom also stabs people with a knife thats attached to a trombone. Director Charles Pierce (THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK) complements these charms with moonlit atmosphere, documentary-styled photography, and tons of small town paranoia. He even throws in Dawn Wells aka Mary Ann from GILLIGANS ISLAND as a tree-hugging victim! What this all means is that TOWN is a sleazy, unsung classic that will scare your pants off. Plus, The Phantom was never caught. In other words: ATTEND THIS SCREENING AT YOUR OWN RISK. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

Does this movie even exist? BOARDINGHOUSE is the first (and only) full-length shot-on-video horror film to be blown up to 35mm and released theatrically. To call it insane would be an understatement. Jim is a psychic/gigolo/meditator. He also wears a leopard-print thong while renting out a cursed house to beautiful women with no ties aka a never-ending supply of primo 1980s bimboz. But thats only the beginning. This is a movie with human beings in it but possibly not made by human beings. It is pie fights, chainsaws, fake British accents, gore, a killer refrigerator, jacuzzis, a woman eating a mouse while wearing a pig head, boobs, beds that eat people, a band called 33 and 1/3, more boobs, and a leading lady known only as Kalassu. Unrelentingly stupid. Obviously important. Clean thongs are not encouraged or required. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

CARNIVAL OF BLOOD Dir. Leonard Kirtman, 1970, R, 87 min, 35mm RZ 5/21

The Burt Young Fanclub is now called to order! As we all know, Young rose to meteoric fame in 1976 after playing Paulie in the legendary ROCKY. But really, who cares? Because in CARNIVAL OF BLOOD, Burt Young appears as Gimpy The Hunchback. And Gimpy The Hunchback is a way better name than Paulie, just as CARNIVAL OF BLOOD is a way better movie than ROCKY. NYCs Coney Island is under attack by an anonymous psychopath. Guts spilled under the boardwalk! Heads lopped off in the spook house! Teddy bears filled with entrails! Does it have anything to do with creepy carnival barker Tom and his dart game? Or Gimpy and his tendency to rip things in half with gimpified rage?! Probably. CARNIVAL is an amazing cinma vrit snapshot of Coney Island in the 1970s. Its also an amazing no-budget horror film that feels like it was created on another planet by drunken cavemen. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

NIGHTMARES IN A DAMAGED BRAIN Dir. Romano Scavolini, 1981, R, 97 min, 35mm RZ 5/28
A UK video distributor once went to jail for selling the uncut version of Nightmares In A Damaged Brain. Think about that. A man was incarcerated because his government deemed the selling of this movie a criminal offense. Well, guess what? WERE NOT AFRAID. A schizo-OCD-psychopath named George escapes from an asylum and embarks on a road trip from NYCs 42nd Street to Orlando, Florida. His purpose? Perversion, humiliation, and mutilation. Filled with psychosexual kinks and ferocious gore, this controversial slasher is an explosion of feel-good grime. Its all here: The suburbs. Woodgrain television sets. Uncomfortable sex. Haunting synths. A man wearing a rubber mask while attacking a kid wearing cartoon pajamas. The grimness, the familiarity, the genuine scares -- NIGHTMARES delivers on all fronts. If you have to get arrested, dont do it for something dumb, like accidentally rolling over a baby in your Toyota Corolla. Do it because you watched this movie. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

THE MAN WITH TWO HEADS

THE MAN WITH TWO HEADS Dir. Andy Milligan, 1972, PG, 80 min, 35mm RZ 5/1
Noted miserable bastard & fascinating artsploitation crossover director Andy Milligan has been getting a lot of attention recently. No less a figure than DRIVE auteur Nicolas Winding Refn has helped to goad the highbrow film establishment into at least acknowledging that Milligan was actually a filmmaker and not just a walking garbage can, which is a major step forward for Milligans reputation. Though the late Milligan was reportedly an insufferable, sadistic human being - a fact reflected in all his movies - he was also a writer/director with an uncommonly pure vision. A vision of universal hatred perhaps, but a vision. Here he indulges himself by writing some of the most lucid passages in his career-long bible of discontent. Its the Jekyll & Hyde story, more or less, with heaping helpings of the Milligan trademarks: misanthropic ranting and near-constant bickering. This is the life. (Lars)

THE LEGEND OF HILLBILLY JOHN Dir. John Newland, 1974, G, 89 min, 35mm RZ 5/8
A real wild number. Like a cross between CLASH OF THE TITANS and DELIVERANCE. Its the story of wandering guitar-slinger Hillbilly John, who moves around in time, has cross-dimensional adventures in the old south and flees from a giant stop motion creature called the Ugly Bird. Naturally he ends up in Washington DC, where he endeavors to save the country. Its pretty strange and doesnt always succeed but it is always a unique spectacle. With Severn Darden, Susan Strasberg, and the hard-jamming country-rock tuneage of Hoyt Axton. (Lars)

WILD PUSSYCAT Dir. Dimis Dadiras, 1968, R, 88 min, 35mm RZ 5/22

From Greece comes this amazing, kinky, violent psychosexual soap opera. When good girl Nadia investigates her sisters death she finds out that sadistic pimp Nick is behind it all so she straps on the leather and whips and beats him at his own game. Full of unspeakable perversions, dark secrets, two-way mirrors, orgies and 40-weight sleaze. Theres even an adorable pussycat, who purrs and licks her paws as the worst kinds of depravity unfold in front of her. Sounds great, huh? But for me the best part of this movie is the CONSTANT cigarette smoking. A rare treat that you wont find anywhere else. (Lars)

THE DYNAMITE BROTHERS Dir. Al Adamson,1974 R, 90 min, 35mm RZ 5/15

Another cross-genre hybrid from economy-conscious auteur Al Adamson. Weve seen Adamsons fusions before: biker-horror (DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN), blaxploitation-Bond (FREEZE BOMB) and kiddie matinee-apesploitation (CARNIVAL MAGIC). With THE DYNAMITE BROTHERS he brings back his favorite black action hero Timothy (BLACK HEAT) Brown and adds Kung Fu to the mix. Like all of the late Adamsons films its hyperdimensionally weird. Al Adamson movies have a kind of ugly-dog charm thats hard to describe and harder to resist. Everything seems slightly greasy and unclean, the shots dont often match, action is ineptly handled, actors who have been good in other films look lost and scared - but when its all over youll have to admit youve been thoroughly entertained. Here ultra-macho Timothy Stud Brown teams up with unknown high-kicker Alan Tang as they flee cops, gangsters and the Immigration and Naturalization Service and try to avenge Tangs brothers death. With gravel-voiced tough guy Aldo Ray and the great James Hong, wearing game show host hand-me-downs. (Lars)

WOMEN IN CELL BLOCK 7 Dir. Rino Di Silvestro, 1973, R, 81 min, 35mm RZ 5/29
Back during the 70s there was a whole lot of social consciousness floating around. It was an era of real concern for equality and change. The movie theaters of the world were a prime battleground in the struggle for freedom and liberty. One subject that received a lot of attention from exploitation filmmakers was female imprisonment. Countless films were produced showing the inside of womens prisons and the struggles therein. Particular emphasis was placed on the love lives of the prisoners, as well as their internecine struggles with the guards and their frequent showers. WOMEN IN CELL BLOCK 7 was made in Italy and so lacks the swaying palms and jungle hellishness of such Filipino classics as THE BIG BIRD CAGE, but the movie makes up for it with some of that old-fashioned disembodiedvoice dubbing, and the funky, funky soundtrack grooves of Franco Bixio. YOU GOT SERVED - ALAMO DANCEOKE RZ 5/15

Lets face it: dance movies are awesome. With innovative choreography and mindblowing physical feats, these films prove that anything, from poverty to prejudice, can be cured through the power of dance. Things that usually matter in film, like a good script or strong acting, take a backseat to whats really important: busting a move. The only problem with this genre is you cant jump up from your seat and join the dance party... until now. Weve partnered with GrooveFit Austin to host the first ever Alamo Danceoke competition, in which local crews compete by reenacting routines live on stage as the movie plays on the silver screen behind them. Step up to the Ritz and watch performers bring scenes to life from CENTER STAGE, DIRTY DANCING, FOOTLOOSE, GREASE, FLASHDANCE, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER and more! Mark your calendars and get ready to kick off your Sunday shoes, because you know this boogie is for real. (Sarah Pitre)

FINAL CUT: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN

Bangarang!: ROMEO + JULIET Baz Luhrmann, 1996, PG-13, 120 min SR 5/1 : RZ 5/11 & 5/12 : LC 5/29
In the fictional, modern-day Southern California city of Verona Beach, the Capulets and the Montagues are arch-rivals. You know the story. Youve read the play. Hope & Despair. Tragedy & Love. Romeo & Juliet... But youve never seen it through the acid-laced lens of a mad Australian. Baz Luhrmann is too much for some, but, like it or not, he is undeniably a master at what he does. Here, he takes his visual panache and love of juxtaposing different time periods and musicalities to create an adrenaline-soaked thrill ride through Shakespeares 400-year-old play. Lurhmann himself has been quoted as saying What I wanted to do was to look at the way in which Shakespeare might make a movie of one of his plays if he was a director. He was a relentless entertainer and a user of incredible devices and theatrical tricks to ultimately create something of meaning and convey a story. That was what we wanted to do. And Luhrmann does just that. He reaches deep into his bag of tricks to give us crazy zooms, decadent cinematography, and a dizzying ballet of bullets and romance in this dripping with 90s-ness update of Romeo + Juliet. Youve got young Claire Danes, baby-faced Leo DiCaprio, an incredible John Leguizamo, the late, great Pete Postlewaite, and a truly memorable Harold Perrinneaunot to mention Paul Rudd looking...well, almost exactly the samein this swank-trash music video set to one of the most indelible movie soundtracks of the 90s. You know, because everyone remembers that goddamned Loverfool video. BANGARANG! (Greg MacLennan)

M Dir. Fritz Lang, 1931, NR, 114 min RZ 5/4, 5/5, 5/7
Langs first foray into sound cinema and Lorres first major leading role, M is a bold and haunting masterwork. Still today it resonates as one of the most influential precursors to modern-day thrillers. Hans Beckert (Lorre) has a penchant for preying on little girls and his time cooped up in the local asylum has only compounded his unsettling compulsion. A few bars from In The Hall of the Mountain King quickly becomes synonymous with Beckerts evil intention and illustrates Langs discovery of sound as key narrative device. Langs classic and unforgettable cautionary tale returns to the big screen courtesy of a brand new, 2K DCP restoration from the Munich Film Archive and distributor Kino Lorber. (Sam Prime)

Zzang!! THE LAST STARFIGHTER Nick Castle, 1984, PG, 101 min RZ 5/5 : VL 5/12
The 1980s were a time when video games mattered. Your parents would drop you at the mall and the arcade would be your babysitter. But if you lost too quickly youd burn through your allowance, suffer unbearable humiliation at the hands of your friends, and spend the rest of the afternoon forlornly moping around the Orange Julius until your big sister could come pick you up. Winning at video games wasnt just a matter of pride, it was a matter of childhood SURVIVAL. And no movie understands that raw fact on a more literal level than THE LAST STARFIGHTER. Its the story of lonely trailer park kid, Alex Rogan, who breaks the high-score record on the Last Starfighter arcade machine only to be scooped up by the games extraterrestrial creator who reveals that the world Alex was escaping to in the game is actually real. Now its up to Alex to save this world with the help of a gloriously realized practical-effect lizard man and a robot clone of himself. Its also a pioneer of early CGI before computer effects ate the real world alive and it succeeds at the now impossible feat of capturing a magical blend of Spielbergian wonder and the galactic whams of George Lucass OG trilogy. Nothing today can hold a joystick to the pure fun and adventure of this star-blasting triumph. For Rylos! (Greg MacLennan and Tommy Swenson)

AFF Best of Fest: SPINNING PLATES Dir. Joseph Levy, 2012, NR, 95 min VL 5/6
Starting a restaurant is one of the most risky business ventures imaginable, nine out of ten fail in their first year. Equally hard is keeping an established restaurant open. Writer/director Joseph Levy (in attendance) takes you behind the scenes of three culinary challenges. At Chicagos Alinea, a cutting-edge restaurant named the seventh-best in the world, the chef must battle a life-threatening obstacle to pursue his passion. At Cocina de Gabby in Tucson, an immigrant family puts everything they have on the line just to make enough to survive and provide for their young daughter. At the 150-year-old Brietbachs Country Dining in Iowa, it may only be the unbreakable bond with its community that keeps a restaurant standing.

Badass Digest Presents: GALAXY QUEST Dir. Dean Parisot, 1999, PG, 102 min SR 5/9 : LC 5/9
Its pretty easy to poke fun at Star Trek and its fandom, but its much harder to mix laser-beam parody with serious affection the way GALAXY QUEST does. Yes, Galaxy Quest stars Tim Allen, but this isnt one of those Tim Allen movies - its actually hilarious and absolutely spot-on. And its more than a little sweet, which doesnt keep it from being totally badass. Directed by Dean Parisot, GALAXY QUEST is the story of a group of washed-up TV actors who are trapped in the niche fandom for their long-canceled sci-fi show. It turns out their fans arent just basementdwellers, though - aliens have seen broadcasts of the show (shades of Explorers!) and believe the televised adventures of Cmdr. Peter Quincy Taggart, captain of the starship Protector, to be documentaries. Embroiled in an interstellar war, the aliens kidnap the actors from a personal appearance to turn the tide of battle. Saying this is the best Tim Allen performance isnt much, but what about this: its one of Alan Rickmans best roles! Sigourney Weaver is absolutely awesome! Sam Rockwell is so good in this movie that it helped catapult him into leading roles! The script by David Howard and Robert Gordon tweaks Star Trek while still letting their characters stand on their own. Everything comes together in a movie good enough to win both the Nebula and the Hugo, two of sci-fis biggest awards. And youll never look at rudimentary lathes the same way again.

Horror Show: THE FUNHOUSE Dir Tobe Hooper, 1981, R, 96 min VL 5/10 : LC 5/25 : SR 5/31
Summer is almost here! And nothing says summer like teenagers being menaced in a carnival spook house by a disgusting killer wearing a Frankenstein mask, am I right? THE FUNHOUSE is the second sicko masterpiece of director Tobe Hoopers career. Like Hoopers THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE before it, this movie is a subversive blend of familial angst, psychological duality, dark comedy, and gritty violence. But thats where the similarities end. FUNHOUSE is an hallucinogenic explosion of neon, nostalgia, and dead teens. Its a valentine to a bygone age of creaky rides and animatronic monsters in the form of a sleazy slasher. Think AMERICAN GRAFFITI, but with more sex, deformed mutants, and people getting hit in the face with axes. Plus, this movie is actually scary. Who needs Leatherface when youve got this much fun? Big Screen Classics: CHARADE Dir. Stanley Donen, 1963, NR, 113 min RZ 5/11 & 5/13 : SR 5/19 & 5/22 : LC 5/19 & 5/22
50 years since it was released CHARADE remains a brilliant and lovingly comic ode on the old school Hollywood spy film and one of the most purely enjoyable cinematic entertainments. Audrey Hepburn stars as Regina, a young housewife who suddenly gets thrown into the lurid world of espionage. Cary Grant plays a spy whos set on obtaining her recently deceased husbands money. But hes not the only one searching. Soon the two are forced to work together to survive. Sounds serious, but in CHARADE nothing is what it seems. Grant plays the smooth-talking charismatic character that he perfected with so many performances throughout his career, most notably NOTORIOUS and NORTH BY NORTHWEST. His strong machismo is matched scene for scene by Hepburn, which makes the chemistry between the two almost criminal. Together they make one of the strongest, most confident screen couples of all-time. Stanley Donens (SINGIN IN THE RAIN) expert direction makes all the many different tones work and a memorably playful color design adds to the films overall versatility. It may be a half-century old, but CHARADE is still as fresh, funny and clever as any movie youve ever seen. Just sit back and enjoy!

Big Screen Classics: ENTER THE DRAGON Dir. Robert Clouse, 1973, R, 98 min LC 5/11 & 5/15 : VL 5/13 & 5/15 : RZ 5/28
ENTER THE DRAGON is the dominantly influential and classic Bruce Lee martial arts masterpiece that spawned a thousand and one sequels, requels, remakes, spoofs, homages, and straight-up so-called Bruceploitation rip-offs. Robert Clouse directs Lee in what would sadly be his last completed feature film role before his untimely and mysterious death in 1973. The result is a spectre of the cinema, a towering, wholly breathtaking persona who resonates onscreen with vibrancy and vitality, supported by co-stars John Saxon (Roper) and Jim Kelly (Williams). Lee goes undercover by way of an invitation to a martial arts tournament on a secluded island, hosted by an unsavory, suspected crime boss. As Lee discovers an underbelly of corruption and prostitution, his cover is blown and two fellow tournament competitors (Roper and Williams) must fight not for sport, but instead for survival. Be sure to also mark your calendar for our American Genre Film Archive-sponsored triple bill of Bruceploitation rarities on glorious 35mm on 5/26 at the Alamo Ritz! (Sam Prime)

Video Hate Squad: TURKISH STAR TREK Dir. Hulki Saner, 1973, NR, 72 min, VHS projection
In the early 1970s, Turkish filmmakers decided that they wanted to make lots of money. In order to ingratiate themselves with an audience that was already familiar with their subject matter, these filmmakers studied popular American films. Then they said: We can do this much better. And so, a mass surge of the most insane and hilarious rip-offs in the history of movies began. The Turks were not afraid to utilize footage, music, and sound effects from other movies. They were also not afraid to make a movie that featured Spider-man as a serial killer. TURKISH STAR TREK re-imagines three episodes of the original STAR TREK series (Man Trap, Amok Time, Tomorrow Is Yesterday) while adding a subplot about a time-traveling comedian. It was the first full-length TREK movie ever produced in the world. To this day, it is also the best. If you dont believe us, believe Mr. Silphatos, a fan from Istanbul, Turkey: In my opinion this movie had been the best science fiction film at Turkey. I cant remember that how many time I have watched this film. Also STAR TREK theme helped film to reach its watcher. Mr. Spak was absolutely well, Turist had slacked off him by the way of computers and words. In one part of the film he asked for lotto numbers to computer and breaked down it, these are amazingly funny. I said that this is the best. I love that. So Give you a change to watch this film; then you are glad to be. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

AGFA Deep Tracks: EVEL KNIEVEL Dir. Marvin J. Chomsky, 1971, NR, 88 min, 35mm RZ 5/12
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a young man fresh out of the USC film school named John Milius was the most sought-after screenwriter and script doctor in all of Hollywood. He was also was one of the manliest, motorcycle-drivin, gun-totin damned geniuses of his time. George Hamilton heard of his talents, offered to put Milius up at a Palm Springs hotel and provide him with an endless supply of the finest cigars, motorcycles, and loose women if he agreed to rewrite a script about Evel Knievel in which Hamilton would star. Upon arriving in Palm Springs, Milius promptly threw the first draft into the hotel pool. Weeks went by and Hamilton never received a single page, so he decided to cut Milius off completely. The very next day, Hamilton received an entire rewritten script sent by telegram. The result is 1971s EVEL KNIEVEL, a film quite possibly written in a day, and one that boldly begins with Knievel comparing himself to Christopher Columbus, The Wright Brothers, and Neil Armstrong to Milius, Knievel is one in a long line of men throughout history who were capable of the impossible. Its quite clear that Milius sees himself as one, too. (Sam Prime)

DETENTION w/ Director Joseph Kahn Joseph Kahn, 2011, R, 93 min RZ 5/19

DETENTION is an apocalyptic fantasy, horror, science fiction, action-thriller, bodyswapping, time-traveling teen romantic comedy where the students of Grizzly Lake must survive their final year of high school. Standing in their way is Cinderhella, a slasher-movie killer who has seemingly come to life and is preying on the schools student body. As the clock ticks and the bodies pile up, the likely suspects are embroiled in a race against time to stop Cinderhella and ultimately save the world... only if they can get out of detention. Professed movie lover/native Texan/music video & commercial director Joseph Kahn self-financed this passion project after the world took a collective shit on him for misunderstanding his self-reflexive, biker movie TORQUE. After the failure of that film, Kahn said, If Im going to financially fail, then I really want to go balls out. And therefore Im going to take my own money and do it my own way, and if Im going to fail spectacularly, Im going to bet everything on it. DETENTION blew onto the scene at SXSW in 2011, but Kahn was, again, critically misunderstood despite a rapturous response from the audience. But, this film operates on so many levels and can be enjoyed in so many ways. Its frenetic, deliberate, and as Badass Digest puts it, a pop culture tempest that blows through dozens of different genres and hundreds of different references and nails every single one of them. Its a challenging movie, but its the movie Joseph Kahn wanted to make, start to finish, which is why the Alamo Drafthouse is giving you another opportunity to give this film the audience it deserves with Joseph Kahn himself in attendance for a post-show Q & A. (Greg MacLennan)

FINAL CUT: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN Dir. Gyorgy Palfi, 2012, NR, 84 min RZ 5/18 & 5/20
The ultimate love story is the tale of the ultimate man and the ultimate woman. And what happens if, by chance, they meet. FINAL CUT: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN is not simply a love letter to the cinema, but an entirely original narrative film crafted using cinema history as its source. By using scenes from more than 450 films spanning the first century of filmmaking, Gyorgi Palfi and his masterful editors construct a beautiful film that is equal parts drama, comedy, and romance, and that endears itself to its audience by evoking personal memories of pervasive imagery. FINAL CUT is an unpretentious film that celebrates cinema in grand fashion while at same time breathing fresh air, new life, and new meaning into pre-existing images/sounds. Both a sumptuous meal for the serious cinephile and a delight for the casual filmgoer -- do not miss FINAL CUT. (Sam Prime)

PAUL MCCARTNEY: WINGS OVER AMERICA 2013, NR, 141 min SR 5/19 : LC 5/21
In 1975 and 1976 Paul McCartney and Wings undertook the epic Wings over the World tour, the largest scale tour they would ever undertake as a band. From this tour came both the legendary Wings over America triple live album and the concert film Rockshow. Although filmed on this tour at the enormous Kingdome in Seattle, Rockshow, originally a cut down version of the concert, was not premiered until November 1980 in New York and April 1981 in London. It was released on Betamax and later on laserdisc. Now for the first time the complete full-length concert is being made available fully restored from the original 35mm film and with restored & remastered sound, including a 5.1 mix for the first time. This is Paul McCartney and Wings live on stage in a concert that is destined to live forever!

Kids Club: FORBIDDEN PLANET Dir. Fred M. Wilcox, 1956, 98 min, 35mm RZ 5/25
Like a deafening thunderbolt of neonized lightning from the deepest reaches of the universe, this Technicolor sci-fi masterpiece split open the imaginations of audiences young and old back in the 1950s -- and it is still every bit as thrilling today! A group of interstellar researchers stumble upon an uncharted world of danger, mystery, and the maddest kind of science and soon become swept up in the adventure of a lifetime! Anne Francis, a pre-goofball Leslie Nielsen, and Robby the Robot star in the undisputed mega-granddaddy of space epics! AGFA Presents THE CLONES OF BRUCE LEE: A Bruceploitation Triple Feature Dir. Various, 1976 & 1981, R, 270 min, 35mm/VHS RZ 5/26 AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY Dir. Terence Nance, 2012, UR, 93 min 5/25 & 5/27
Every so often, you come across a new voice in cinema that produces something so extremely personal, so wantonly vulnerable, and so creatively imaginative that you cannot help but want to do everything in your power to help that film be seen. For me, AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY by Terence Nance is precisely that film. A young mans struggle to clarify his relationship with a young woman spans both genre and form as the line between romantic and platonic blurs. Part live action, part stop-motion, and part hand-drawn, OVERSIMPLIFICATION is a kind of essay that tackles an issue that proves personal to the filmmaker and universally accessible to the audience. As Terence Nances first feature, this is just the beginning for a remarkable new talent. (Sam Prime) We all miss Bruce Lee. We may never have known him other than through his films or the legends that hailed him as a superhuman being capable of anything at all, but his influence on martial arts and pop culture still resonates deeply today. In the wake of his mysterious death in 1973, audiences nationwide were left completely heartbroken. Never again would they witness Lee bruisin on the big screen. Like a clarion call, low-budget producers and disreputable distributors seized the rare opportunity to exploit the audience demand with a string of sometimes very weird, occasionally wonderful, and at times just plain unwatchable Bruce Lee rip-offs, which we now know as Bruceploitation films. For this AGFA-sponsored Bruceploitation triple feature, we have chosen three of the absolute strangest titles, two straight from the archive and one ultra-rare title on VHS: BRUCE LEE FIGHTS BACK FROM THE GRAVE (1976), EXIT THE DRAGON, ENTER THE TIGER (1976), and THE CLONES OF BRUCE LEE (1981) - on VHS. Nothing on this earth will prepare you for the all-out cumulative mega-insanity of these three furious fistfuls of film! (Sam Prime)

Before he directed the universally acclaimed INFERNAL AFFAIRS (2002), the film that Martin Scorseses THE DEPARTED (2006) remakes for an English-language audience, Alan Mak directed XMAS RAVE FEVER. As best as I can tell, XMAS RAVE FEVER has nothing to do with Christmas, very little to do with raves, and nothing to do with a fever. In fact, rave seems to be used as a kind of confusing synonym for going out. Its part mystery, part comedy, all strange. The original distributor, Golden Harvest, quite honestly seems to have changed the title from RAVE FEVER to XMAS RAVE FEVER simply to account for a late December release. This title was shown in part at the most recent AGFA Reel One Party, but was narrowly defeated for the audience choice by an altogether very different film, HIGH VELOCITY with Ben Gazzara and Paul Winfield. Nows your chance to see XMAS RAVE FEVER! Dont forget to wear Xmas sweater! Or wear your favorite rave outfit! Or, well, just come dressed as you normally would. We wont judge you. (Sam Prime)

Tough Guy Cinema: SPEED Jan De Bont, 1994, R, 116 min, 35mm RZ 5/26 & 5/27
Pop quiz, hotshot. Theres a bomb on a bus. Once the bus goes 50 miles an hour, the bomb is armed. If it drops below 50, it blows up. What do you do? What do YOU do? Full of manic exhilaration, Roger Ebert described SPEED as a bruised forearm movie, because youre always grabbing the arm of the person sitting next to you. In lesser hands, this film could have been just another Die Hard on a ____, but in Jan De Bonts capable hands (director of Twister and DP of Die Hard), this film becomes a nonstop thrill ride that blazes through its two-hour runtime in the blink of an eye. You cant explain what makes SPEED goodit just is. It never has any pretense to be anything but what it is and never lets up off the action-thriller gas. Keanu Reeves always finds a way to anchor a movie despite a limited amount of talent, and a young Sandy B. is always a firecracker of charm and fun. Pepper in a maniacal Dennis Hopper and a sad sack Jeff Bridges, and you got yourself a picture for the ages. The plot is simple with the thrills nonstop. REAL cars and REAL people will sweat, bleed and explode this May, as Tough Guy Cinema brings SPEED back to the big screen in glorious 35mm with LIVE in-theater pyrotechnics. So, now that you know: what are you gonna do hotshot? (Greg MacLennan)

GIRLIE NIGHT

CELEBRATING THE MUCH-LOVED BUT OFTEN NEGLECTED GENRE OF SLUMBER PARTY MOVIES. AT GIRLIE NIGHT, YOU CAN SQUEE AND SWOON WITHOUT SHAME. SERIOUSLY.

THE BREAKFAST CLUB

THE BREAKFAST CLUB Dir John Hughes, 1985, R, 97 min SR 5/7 : LC 5/8 : RZ 5/14 & 5/21
Growing up, I was a model student. I respected my teachers and followed the rules, because I was scared to death of getting punished. And then I saw THE BREAKFAST CLUB, and I realized that I should have been getting in trouble all long, because detention is awesome. You get to spend a day in the library, which is obviously ripe for dance parties, and become besties with Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall and Judd Nelson. (Although Id like to be way more than friends with Bender.) I would seriously go back to high school and rack up a thousand tardies just to spend an hour with THE BREAKFAST CLUB, but thanks to Girlie Night, I dont have to break any rules to see my favorite teenagers. Well make fun of Assistant Principal Vernon, sing along to Simple Minds and, at the end, raise our fists together in celebration. Whether youre a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess or a criminal, youre guaranteed to have the best night of detention ever. (Sarah Pitre)

Mothers Day Afternoon Tea: LITTLE WOMEN Dir. Gillian Armstrong, 1994, PG, 115 min LC 5/12
Long before women wondered if they were a Carrie, Samantha, Miranda or Charlotte, girls have been classifying themselves as one of the March sisters. If youre traditional, youre Meg (Trini Alvarado); if youre unbelievably angelic, youre Beth (Claire Danes); if youre silly and vain, youre Amy (Kirsten Dunst), although you probably wont admit it; and if youre unconventional, youre definitely a Jo (Winona Ryder). But I think we can all agree that the best character in Louisa May Alcotts classic novel is Marmee (Susan Sarandon), the loving, patient and deeply feminist matriarch of the March clan. Shes an inspiring portrait of motherhood and a reminder of the vital role our moms have played in our lives. We invite you to celebrate your own Marmee at this special Mothers Day edition of Afternoon Tea, where you can sip on tea, nibble on treats and enjoy the heartwarming story of LITTLE WOMEN. And no, you dont have to share with the Hummels. (Sarah Pitre)

Broadway Brunch: CABARET Dir Bob Fosse, 1972, PG, 124 min RZ 5/18 & 5/19 : SR 5/25 & 5/26
What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play. Life is a cabaret, old chum, come to the cabaret. Even though she sang the words over 40 years ago, Liza Minnellis voice rings clear and true, and we hope youll accept her invitation with the Broadway Brunch screening of CABARET. Set in Berlin in 1931, this Bob Fosse film tells the story of Sally Bowles, a bohemian performer wrestling with life and love under the growing shadow of the Nazi Party. Minnellis indomitable spirit and powerful pipes fill the screen with passion, and Joel Grey is positively electric as the MC. In addition to daring musical numbers, this film bravely explores issues of sexual identity as well as the shifting culture of 1930s Germany. CABARET won eight Academy Awards, and when you see it on the big screen, youll remember why. With our delicious brunch menu and mimosas available, youre sure to enjoy your time at the Kit Kat Club, so start celebrating, right this way, your tables waiting! (Sarah Pitre)

Afternoon Tea: MANSFIELD PARK Dir Patricia Rozema, 1999, PG-13, 112 min LC 5/25
Given that Jane Austen is the patron saint of the Afternoon Tea series, its our duty to screen as many of the film versions of her books as possible. And its a duty we take very, very seriously. In May, were tackling her most controversial novel, MANSFIELD PARK, with this 1999 adaptation starring Frances OConnor as Fanny Price and Jonny Lee Miller as the dashing Edmund Bertram. Although this film is based on the novel, director Patricia Rozema takes the story in a new (and ultimately satisfying) direction in order to incorporate elements from Austens own life. In spite of the plot variations, you can still expect the standard and much beloved Austen ingredients: a strong heroine, a tingly romance and plenty of social commentary, all wrapped up in a delightfully witty package. Enjoy unwrapping this cinematic gift while savoring three servings of tea and a plate of delicious treats, all included in your ticket. Its an afternoon of entertainment that will make everyone, from the poorest Price to the richest Bertram, feel incredibly classy. (Sarah Pitre)
