Our Family Decreased The Amount of Electricity Used

Junsoo Park, Kuala Lumpur - Last August, I decided to embark on a journey to try to save the world from crisis in my own small way: To conserve electricity. Energy conservation is important because energy usage consumes nonrenewable resources such as coal, oil, or gas and causes pollution and global warming. In the beginning, I thought it would be easy to save electricity. How could this be difcult to save a little bit of electricity? I estimated it would take less than two years for me to reach my goal. However, it was harder than I thought. At rst, I sat down and made a list and selected ve ways to save energy; The air conditioner, the computer, the laundry, the lights, and the water heater. Then, I chose what Im going to change about the usage of these electricity consumers. Air

conditioner, one of the top consumer, would be turned off unless I truly need it and if so, I would make it 25 degrees Celsius, which is an appropriate temperature. Same goes with lights, except that they dont have temperatures. The laundry would be used once in a day at night, so it would save both water and energy. The computer, which is a desktop, would be turned on if we have to print, but for rest of the day, it would remain off. Last, but not least,

would be the water heater. I decided to heat the water if I had to wash off some oil from a plate while washing it, but others, I can manage with cold water. From the line graph and equation below, it shows that in order to reach my goal of reducing the amount of KwH to 300 KwH, it will take me about 118 months, which is a quite a long journey. No matter to me as long as Im saving the Earth in my own small way. The equation,

which is a very useful tool that Ive created by solving the slope of a tted line that Ive drawn on a scatter plot and the vertical intercept in the scatter plot. Ive connected the tted line from the beginning data to the most recent data Ive collected so far during this adventure. Then Ive gotten another useful tool of mine, which is a calculator, to divide the change of the KwH usage to the change of the months after August, which was 11.1. To make my wonderful and perfect estimate, Ive divided the beginning data, 1308, by 11.1, which is the slope of the tted line, and got 117.83..... Also, rounded that up by the nearest ones, so I got 118 months until I reach my goal! Now, I must continue on with my longest journey so far on my life. It was grateful for me to have some free time to write this journal about my plans and estimates about my journey. Now! Let the greatest journey begin!
