FRACTION (TIPS & STRATEGY)

In this session we will learn about the properties of Fraction, different possible problems and solved examples. This session will be very helpful in the solving different questions on Fraction. Comparison of Fractions: We can compare two or more different fractions with the help of studying these cases. Case 1: If the two or more fractions have same denominator, the comparison becomes easy, the greater fraction is that which has the greater numerator. Example: In
3 13 13

and

is the greatest. Because. It has greatest numerator.

Case 2: If the two or more fractions have same numerator, the fraction which has the lowest value of denominator, will be the greatest. Example: In
9 11 13

and . The greatest fraction is . Because. It has the lowest

17 11

value of denominator. Case 3: If the two or more fractions have different numerator and different denominator. Then you will have to follow these steps. Step 1: Just look at the digits of numerator and assume the maximum number of digits in the numerator as n. Similarly look at the denominator and assume the maximum number of digits in the denominator as d. Step 2: Calculate (d n). Step 3: If (d n) = 0 or 1, multiply each fraction by 10. If (d n) = 2, 3, 4 multiply each fraction given by 102, 103, 104 respectively.

Step 4: After multiplication, find only the integer value of the resultant fraction. Step 5: If the two or more integer values are same then find the next decimal place and so on. Step 6: After all these steps we have to compare the integer/decimal values. The fraction having the maximum value is the greatest fraction. Example: Find the greatest fraction.

Solution: Here, maximum number of digits in the numerator is 1. And maximum number of digits in the denominator is 2. Now, d n = 2 1 =1. So, multiply the given fractions by 10 6 10, 11 7 10, 13 3 10, 5 5 10, 6 6 7 10 and 10 7 9

Since the integer values of few fractions are same, we have to find the next decimal digits for these fractions. The decimal values are; 5.45, 5.38, 6.00, 8.33, 8.57 and
6 7

7.77

Now, the greatest value of these fractions is 8.57 of . Therefore the greatest fraction is .

Fractional part of a number: The fractional part of a number is calculated by multiplying the number by the fraction.

Example: of 80 is, 80 = 60.

To find fractions in between two given fractions: If you have to find a fraction between and . You can find the fraction with these steps;
b d a c

Step 1: First add the numerators of the given fractions. The resultant will be the numerator of the required fraction. I.e. the required numerator is a + c. Step 2: Add the denominators of the given fractions. The resultant will be the denominator of the required fraction. I.e. the required denominator is b + d. Step 3: The required fraction =
a+c b+d

Solution: 1. a) Here the maximum number of digits in numerator and denominator is 2 and 2. Therefore the difference is 0. Now by multiplying by 10. We will get the decimal values 8.00, 7.50, 8.18, 8.46 respectively. Hence the least fraction is .
4 3

b) Here the maximum number of digits in numerator and denominator is 2 and 2 respectively. Therefore the difference is 0. Now by multiplying by 10. We will get the integers 6.66, 6.36, 8.57, 7.64 respectively. Hence the least fraction is
7 11

c) Here the maximum number of digits in numerator and denominator is 2 and 4 respectively. Therefore the difference is 2. Now by multiplying by 10 2. We will get the integers 3, 2, 1, 2 respectively. Hence the least fraction is
21 1051

d) Here the maximum number of digits in numerator and denominator is 2 and 2 respectively. Therefore the difference is 2. Now by multiplying by 10 2. We will get the integers 6, 7, 7, 7 respectively. Hence the least fraction is .
