The game is played on a 5 x 3 table. The River Kalatsha and streams are fordable except for Foot Artillery, which must cross at the bridges; all units are in bad going whilst crossing. All units except Artillery can be pushed back into the streams without penalty but never the River.

Grand Armee:
CinC (Napoleon) 1800paces +2 IADC and 1 x Special ADC 4 x Sub Commanders (Ney, Davout, Eugene, Murat) 600paces 3 x Ms (Old Guard) (one is Middle Guard) 3 x Ms/Lt (E) (2 Young Guard, Westphalian Guard ) 3 x Ms (E) (Vistula Legion, Italian Guard, 57th Ligne) 5 x Ms/Lt 14 x Ms (including 2 Polish and 1 Wurtemburg) 2 x Ms (M) (Westphalian) 2 x HC (Old Guard) 2 x LC (Old Guard) 1 x HC (E) (Saxon) 4 x HC 1 x LC (E) (Italian Guard) 7 x LC (including 2 Polish) 4 x LC (M) (Wurtemburg, Westphalian, Italian, Bavarian) 1 x FA (E) (Guard) 1 x HA (E) (Guard) 7 x FA (including 1 Westphalian and 1Polish) 6 x HA (including 1 Italian Guard and 1 Wurtemburg) 71 units, 75 Points All the Westphalians must be in one Formation on deployment, same for the Italian Guard and Polish and for the French Guard (this includes the Vistula Legion). The Allied Cavalry has been classed as Militia because of the degenerated quality of the mounts and low moral, not because of any lack of training or ability. On deployment Napoleon must be within 300paces of his Guard Formation.

Russian Army:
CinC (Kutusov and Alexander) 1200paces and 1 x Special ADC 4 x Sub Commanders (Barclay, Bagration, Miloradovich, Gorchakov) 600paces 3 x Ms (E) (Guard) 1 x Lt (E) (Guard) 6 x Ms (Grenadiers) 5 x Lt 12 x Ms 4 x LEM (Moscow & Smolensk Militia) 1 x HC (E) (Guard) 2 x HC 4 x LC (E) (Guard) 7 x LC 4 x IC (Cossacks) 1 x FA (E) (Massed Guard) 6 x HA 10 x FA 71 units, 70 points Guard & Grenadiers Muskets fire as Line, Line Muskets fire as Militia and The Levy have no ranged fire ability (as most were pike armed). On deployment the Guard Ms must be within 300paces of their CinC. The Russian Fortifications provide the standard +1 in combat except for the Grand Redoubt which is +2 (most fortifications will also get the +1 for being up hill) Each fortification can hold one unit except the Grand Redoubt which can hold two units. Any artillery unit in a fortification has an arc of fire up to 45 degrees out from either side of the front base edge and is classed as Fixed Artillery. This is an epic battle, the game lasts up to 25 turns, Russians set up first, French move first. The French deployment line is 800 paces from the base line and the Russian deployment line is up to 2000 paces from their base line. The players gain a decisive victory if they reach 32 Victory Points before the last game turn. If the game reaches the end of 25 turns and one side has an advantage of 5 points or more then that side has gained a victory if less than 5 points the battle is a draw. 4 Victory Points (VP) are awarded for the capture and 4 VP are deducted for the loss of the Grand Redoubt. 2 VP are awarded and 2 VP are deducted for Borodino. 3 VP are awarded and 3 VP deducted for the Baggage Train. One VP is awarded and one VP deducted for each of the other Fortifications. Four VP are awarded for the elimination of each Old Guard Musket Unit, two VP for the elimination for each Russian Guard Musket Unit and each Old Guard Cavalry Unit and one VP for the elimination of all other units except Cossacks. Borodino is classed as a Poor BUA it was a large underdeveloped village constructed of wooden buildings, therefore it offers the Garrison only +3 in Close Combat instead of the usual +4 Top Tip: Any artillery elements that are to go into the Grand redoubt or the Fleches should be taken off their model bases. Dead ground is a feature of this battle and players should discuss this and agree on the areas affected. The Grand Redoubt should be able to have restricted overhead fire. Artillery Reserve Rule: remove 2 x Foot and 1 x Horse per side.
